Why Men Won't Commit: Getting What You Both Want Without Playing Games
Published in Digital by Atria Books ()
Author: George Weinberg
Amazon base price: $19.99
Average review score:

strong relationship guide
After a quarter of a century working closely with men, Dr. George Weinberg concludes that the male of the species desires permanent commitment and a forever love equal to that, which women want too. The difference is men believe that to admit they want a permanent partner is not considered part of the cultural image and thus too feminine so most males hide their inner feelings as an alpha menace to their masculinity. Dr. Weinberg believes culture forces this role to include women placing the man of their dreams in a situation by comparing his strengths and weaknesses to his rivals.

WHY MEN WON'T COMMIT: GETTING WHAT YOU BOTH WANT WITHOUT PLAYING GAMES provides a straight forward guide for frustrated women to enable their mate to find his feelings ("gut reactions") by altering her behavior. Before feminists scream "no Jane" chauvinism and machos play Tarzan, the key in Dr. Weinberg's help guide is to accept that the male is the "weaker sex" so that the stronger female must take charge by being the relationship caretaker reaching through the stereotype stud to his inner being. This is an easy to follow guide that wastes little if any space assisting frustrated women with solid advice.

Finally, a clear understanding that makes sense
I've read enough "communications" books to fill a library but never before have I encountered an explanation of the facts of not only the difference between men and women but the genesis of those differences. Dr. Weinberg's insight is without peer along with being honest and clear. Finally, a means to understanding that one can actually learn, internalize and utilize. Me nare not from Mars. They're human. That understanding promises to do more for relationships then anything anyone has ever said before.

Personal Advancement
I found out from working with this book and two others that I was having trouble really committing to my wife because of my deep fears of intimacy. Between what I learned in this, "Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway," and "9 Free Secrets of new sensual power" I am now off of the rocky ground my wife and I were constantly navigating through, and together we are celebrating our anniversary this year happier than ever. Thank you Dr. Weinberg and Clint Arthur.

Two Thumbs up for this great teaching tool!
I manage an office of 70 lawyers that needed team building skills, but have a deep scepticism about the usual drills. I found this book to be clearly written, well organized and easy to adapt to my training needs. We used several of the games at a recent office retreat to great success. I strongly recommend Games That Teach Teams to anyone who wants to get their team to work, and play, better.

More than a team activity book...
if you are in the process for building a team and looking for activites to teach effective team behaviors, then this book is for you. This book can be used for a team just starting to work together or teams who have been working together for quite some time. There is much more to this book than the 21 teams provided.

The first section helps you determine what type of team you have by classifying teams. In the next section there is a model and structure for effective team development. Once you've determined the team classification and team development area, then you can use the handy matrix to select the most appropriate activity.

The book provides very helpful facilitation strategies for before, during and processing each activity. Each of the 21 activities has detailed well though out instructions and reproducible handouts. You have everything you need to facilitate any of the activities in this book.

Valuable Resource for Facilitators!
As an in-house OD consultant, I am always on the lookout for new games to use with teams and energizers for off-site meetings. The collection of games assembled here provides a wide variety of time frames and a comprehensive set of objectives for team learning. The formats of the various games are simple and yet engaging -- and you won't be hunting everywhere for props and materials. I can't wait to try these out at my next off-site meeting.

The Shaman's Bulldog
Dear Readers,

I must say that this is one of the most outstanding books that I have read in a long time. In a most complicated world that we all live in today it was so nice to read about the simple things that make us what we really are.

Thankyou Renaldo and thankyou Mr Faccio Bello for showing us the way to your heart.

True to form - a very meaningful tribute
As a bulldog owner I found this book to be not only deeply touching, but very authentic as well. It highlights the animal's personality traits and loving nature. The Shaman Bulldog is a glorious story of how an animal can heal you and bring you face to face with the depths of love within you. It's a glorious tribute to not just the Bulldog, but all animals that give us the gift of their companionship. How few of us deserve them.

Authentic, loving, and a wonderful read.
This is one of the most endearing books I have read in a very long time. Not just a book for bulldog owners, it is for anyone who has loved, lost and loved again. I couldn't put it down.

Gold Standard
This work is the Gold Standard to which all other Exercise Physiology books are measured. I was introduced to the Second Edition of the book in an entry-level class in Graduate school. To this day I find it a necessary reference from my library.

Personally, the most useful information to me is on Energetics as it pertains to athletics, training adaptations, exercise testing and prescription. I use this information to help me decide how to train athletes from different sports. But, there is so much more than that in this book. Metabolism, Ventilation, Heart and Circulation (including CVD) is all covered thoroughly.

I especially like Brooks' approach to physiology. Brooks, likes to examine physiology by studying the rate-limiting processes. And to a coach, like me, finding weakness and improving that weakness is crucial to winning. Another topic I enjoy is Brooks' take on the misnomer of Anaerobic Threshold and Lactic Acid.

It's an extremely well-organized, well-written text. It's easy to read and a challenge at the same time. Brooks makes you think and delivers difficult information in a way that is easier to understand than other textbooks.

An excellent compendium on work physiolgy
I received both my B.S., and M.S. in Exercise Biochemistry from Univ. of Mass, and Univ. of Colorado, Boulder, respectively. My former advisor studied under Brooks at Berkely (He received his Doctorate there). In any event the approach our department undertook towards exercise biochemistry/physiology was at the cell and molecular level. Brooks text was central to the program. What is great about the book, is that it explains complicated biochemical processes in easy to understand language and places it in the context of applied physiology. The book stacks up to classic texts like Molecular Biology of the Cell (Albert, Bray, Lewis), and many of the classic biochemistry texts. In my opinion it is far superior to texts by McArdle & Katch, or Textbook of Work Physiology (author escapes me, for now).

Excellent textbook! I still use it as a major ref.
I would have to agree with most experts in this field, that Brooks did a smashing job when writing this text. His chapters on bioenergetics are superlatively done. Outstanding graphs, analogies ,coupled with an eazy to understand vennacular. The chapter on bioenergetics is extremly lucid when explaining the esoteric aspects of coupled energy metabolism and muscle performance. Brad Nindl from (Penn State University) and Dr. Paul Arciero (Skidmore College) still utlize his text, and often refere to his chapters on energy metabolism and exercise. Many of our lively discussions and research ideas were spurred by Brooks text. Not only does this text service as an outstanding learning tool, when learning the basic concepts of exercie physiology, but acts as a catalyst for innovative ideas for new research. The references are all up to date, providing eazy access to "cutting-edge" researchers. His chapters on cardiovascular physiology are well organized and follow the same lucid format of the previous chapters, however, i wish he included information on the newer developments in cardiovascular physiology and exercise, such as the work being currently conducted on signial transduction and on the dysregualtion of the sacroplasmic reticulum during CHF etc.. Overall i would recommand this textbook to any serious student, scholar, physician or allied health professional who is wishing to futher their understanding of this fastinating subject. I am currently using his text as a major ref. for preparing for part I of the USMLE!! Yours In Great Learning

Vibrant, witty, and charming!
George is lovable, and the artwork is bold and imaginative. Definitely a book kids will want read again and again.

SO much fun!

Praise for George
I'm a teacher and a parent, and this book is a hit at school and at home. George Upside Down is certainly one of the best stories of 2003.

My kids adore the bright pictures and humorous story. George is a wonderful book -- read right side up and even upside down as my kids have tried!

Perspective is everything...
What a joyous, fun book! A book that can be read over and over, without losing it's humor or appeal, which is good, because I'd predict it's constant demand. George is such an affable character, and the pictures, well, just make you want to smile throught out. We love George at our house!

Human Resources Impostors: What Every CEO Should Know About Their Human Resources Program and Staff

An unconventional HR management approach
"Impostors" was a pleasant surprise. A refreshing change from the malarkey found in a lot of today's business titles. I was entertained, challenged and surprised at how many good ideas there were for the taking.

A New and Different HR Management Perspective
After a slow start, the pace and interest level accelerated rapidly. The thing I enjoyed most was the book read like a novel rather than a technical business publication. Koch's on the road experiences covered a full spectrum, and I felt challenged to come up with answers as to how I might handle some of the real life situations presented. This book will force you to think and to take a position. That's why I liked it so much.

Mandatory Reading For All HR Professionals
As a 20 year HR professional I'm very confident in my HR knowledge and abilities, and I make it a priority to keep current. Initially I wasn't interested in this title but I heard positive things about it. Now, I wish I had read it sooner. In my opinion, this is must reading for all HR professionals. You may not agree with Koch's direct and no nonsense approach but you'll be hard pressed to find fault in his documented programs and logic. If you're interested in making HR improvements in your organization, read this book.

Great read for anyone interested in healthcare and bodywork
Interesting perspective on how the human body is put together. Well-written and enjoyable to read, yet full of detailed descriptions.

awesome
Great overview of human anatomy and physiology from an integrative perspective. Brings together a lot of scientific information in an easily understood and relevant fashion that particularly explains many aspects of physiology as they apply to massage and bodywork.

Fascinating and Enlightening!
I had bought this for a friend about to start massage school--but I'm KEEPING IT! The writing communicates a deep love and interest in the body and how it works, and how we respond to touch as healing. This is a wonderful way to learn about the anatomy and physiology of our living, working bodies.

Great
After purchasing too many sub-par reference books on anatomy for artists, I highly recommend the Bridgeman books. This one stresses the hinges and joints of the body and how their bending and twisting movements affect the external shape of a figure. Nobody has studied the figure as long or as intensely as George Bridgeman and it shows in the superb illustrations, many apparantly constructed from memory. For economy of line and accurate sence of under-structure, the illustrations can't be beat. Incidently, "Bridgman's Complete Guide to Drawing From Life" incorperates much of the above book, along with several others, and is a better buy. (It's also a larger format book!)

I also recommend "The Human Figure: An Anatomy for Artists" by David K. Rubins.

Superb!
It's amazing, I haven't even begun to read it, I've only copied the pictures, and I'm already doing much, much better! Obviously, I intend to read the book, since it would make my work even better. This is one of the best anatomy books I've ever looked at. Even though I haven't read it yet, it's indespible. Five stars.

The best figure reference available
I am a commercial artist and an illustrator in training, after coming across a lot of artistic anatomy books over the years I say honestly that this and all the George Bridgman books are the best available. A couple of reasons for this are 1) his clear and totally accurate drawings and 2) he shows us muscle groups that act together rather than just naming every single muscle and leaving it at that. Also, he uses a very visual teaching method, showing the shapes of the muscle masses that are easy to remember. I would suggest that every beginner start with Mr. Bridgman.

Helpful for Couples Who Want to Improve their Communication
For years I have observed the characteristics of successful, long-term relationships. The one trait that seems to cut across all of these was the ability to tell a partner your feelings and desires, whether trivial or radical, in a clear and nonthreatening way.

Despite the fact that I've been told professionally that I am an excellent communicator, this book helped me realize that in intimate relationships I still play the "crazymaking" game of confusing coded and conflicting messages.

The book's examples showed how confusing coded and double messages exist in most relationships, why they are there, and what to do about them. It's especially relevant for couples in which one partner is passive-aggressive, though useful for nearly any couple who wants to improve their effectiveness at talking to one another.

The only reason I didn't give this book 5 *s is because there are several places where the authors wander off into theoretical space that won't mean a lot to anyone without a psychology degree. If you skip over those parts to the next example, you'll find this book fast and easy reading.

How to untangle the communication mess you're in.
This is the clearest description of how people (especially couples) get into the tangled web of resentments and withholds so common in a marriage and how to get out of the tangle. It is profusely sprinkled with examples of dialog, which not only makes the book easier to read, but makes the principles crystal clear.

The first part of the book clarifies exactly what the problem is. The second part of the book spells out what you can do about it. I'm the author of the book, Self-Help Stuff That Works, and much of what I've learned that really matters about communication can be traced back to this book. It is a shame it is out of print, but if you can find a copy, buy it!

Every couple involved in a relationship should own a copy
If you want to find out why you make the statement" he/she is driving me crazy", then read this book and you will have the understanding necessary to finally figure out what is really going on. It truly is an amazing book and gives you what you need to once and for all put a stop to some of the crazy-making going on in your relationship. A must reading for everyone, not just someone in a relationship. It helps you to understand why you do the things you do.

How to Talk to Your Cat

Informative, but makes light of being an outdoor cat
This entertaining and informative book touches on the history of cats and shows young people the various ways cats communicate with their human companions. Readers discover that cats can have as many as 19 different ways to say "meow" and that their tails, ears, and whiskers play an important role in their communication with people and other cats. While much of the material is a wonderful introduction on cat behavior, the author talks about cats going outside freely at night (most humane groups advocate cats remain indoors for safety) and notes that those cats will eventually get into fights. She also mentions their eventual return home with bloodied wounds, but fails to advise the reader (supposedly young children) to get the feline proper veterinary attention. This was my only disappointment with the book, however, and it should not be dismissed on this one account, as there is good information in here for little learners.

HOWLING GREAT FUN AND FABULOUS ILLUSTRATIONS!
Let's start simply and honestly, the same way these tomes approach their subject matter, and say these are the cat's meow! Jean Craighead George has penned two ultra-thin volumes on communicating with our best friends and felines, and each is a howling success. The Newberry Medal-winning author does what someone like Elizabeth Masrshall Thomas has tried to do in books tens of thousands words and pages longer and could not. Jean, by George, had found the winning ways to teach pet lovers how to chat with their four-footed pals. Her writing is sparse: "A lick is not a kiss. It is a statement that says you're a wonderful leader." Her advice is refreshing: "Growling is aggressive talk. Don't growl back. Dogs don't like that." As special as her words is the whimiscal use of arkwork: actual color photos of the animated author interacting with illustrations (by Sue Truesdell) of equally animated cartoon cats and dogs. (We just love the one of George on all fours, rubbing heads with a cat!) Four paws up!

Purrr-fect!
I happen to own an earlier version of this book -- a paperback book with only black and white drawings. This book with charming and goofy watercolor cats contains all the useful and entertaining information as the first one but will be so much more accesible to children. It has helped us understand our inscrutable pets and to better meet their needs which is why we are here in the first place. A MUST for the cat lovers library.
