Economic Development (The Addison-Wesley Series in Economics)

Accessible and Comprehensive
The greatest problem facing economists today (I should say "facing the world today") is how to create wealth in the poorest countries of the world. This introduction to the subject is accessible to any reader, even those with very limited previous knowledge of economics. The book begins with a critical summary of current development theories and then takes on a number of policy questions, with case studies. Each chapter ends with discussion questions and the publisher maintains a web site with useful quantitative and graphing exercises (with answers).

Michael Todaro writes from a left-of-center perspective and is more ideological than most textbook writers. However, he presents other points of view and presents them pretty fairly in my opinion. And I have to say that he scores some pretty big points against the neoclassical theorists by showing that their assumptions are frequently at odds with reality.

While some of Todaro's more stridently ideological statements can be annoying, I know of no other book that provides such a comprehensive, well organized, and engagingly written introduction to economic development.

A very readable introduction to developmental economics.
Todaro in this book presents what is quite possibly the easiest to understand introduction to developmental economics that the world has to offer. He does not provide quick answers but a logical and well thought out conception of the complexities of the problems in a format that although not wholly excluding mathmatics, uses it only in appendixes, etc. to explain problems-- which leaves the book open to a wider audience (and also does not allow its readers into the overly simplistic answers that too much mathmatics sometimes hints at....) In my studies of development, this book more often than any other served as a quick reference and fairly handy bibliography. I recommend this book to any undergraduate student or student of public policy the world over. It should be a classic.

The best book on the complexities of economic development.
Todaros's text on the complexities a developing country must face and consider to lead itself out of poverty and backwardness gets better with every edition, now on its sixth. It is the only book I have found that, with unsurpasssed dexterity, combines economics, sociology and political science into a unifying frame that should be required reading for policymakers and government throughout the developing world. His writing style, clarity of exposition and long-term vision are absolutely second to none.

A Wonderful Thriller
This is story that takes you on a chilling ride through the eyes of a madman. There are many unexpected twists and turns that will leave you reeling, and wanting more.
It's wonderfully written story with plenty of suspense and mystery. A MUST read!!

The madman reignes supreme over a weakened fiction market.
The novel starts out as a killer is deciding to kill. Perhaps this is is first prey that he will let be known he is in quiet operation on the darkened streets of Nashville, country music capital. Singing hopefuls are the target of the madman's ever-worsening rage and soon FBI and local police are trying to anticipate the madman's next move.

Beautiful songstress Sharon Sharpe provides a hot addition to the list of living characters, as the madman's future target.

Read The Music City Madman, and you'll quickly embrace the back wall of your mind, as Stephen J. Hill takes you on a fast and slick journey into public madness. Five Stars - Webmaster of Twilight Surfers

A mini-movie in my head
I have recently read The Music City Madman. I thought the book was the best suspense/crime fiction to be available for quite a while. Since I live in Nashville, The subject matter hits close to home. The author, Stephen J. Hill has a distinctive style of writing. He puts you in a mini-movie in your head, where you're able to visualize the characters and the scenes unfolding before you on the written page. The characters and situations are top-rank in suspense and I just couldn't wait to keep turning the page. It's been a while since a book has instilled in me such a passion for reading. I'm waiting for what would surely be the best movie in Hollywood the year it's released. The ending I will save for all those not wanting something so good spoiled by some on-line reviewer. But it's five stars...

The BEST way to start your day!
After hearing many of Steve Hill's fiery sermons, I didn't know what to expect from his devotional book. I have been consistently amazed by the tenderness of his writing and the encouragement I get each day I use this book.

The devotional includes not only Hill's take on scripture, but also stands on the shoulders of many of Christianity's greats to drive God's Word into the hearts of readers.

It's arranged in a "daily" format and includes four scripture selections at the bottom of each page that lead you through the whole Bible in the same time it takes you to get through the book.

Buy it and prepare for God to change you!

The most awesome book!
I LOVE this devotional! Whenever I need a word from the Lord, It's there. It has scriptures to read also, at the bottom..each day. And all kinds of cool stuff! I can turn to any page randomly and be blessed..It's so cool! Well, If y ou get ONE BOOK this year..Make it this one...Only if you're serious about your relationship with Jesus, and wanting to know him more!

Complete without being difficult
This book may be considered a reference in the study of electric machines, because it brings the main aspects of electromechanical energy conversion devices without being difficult to understand. Its way for explaining the relations of power/current/torque in induction machines is the best one I've seen in any book.

Electric machinery easy at high level
The most powerfull book in Electric Machinery for the beginners and experts, at the same level of complexity (it's hard to read but it's very interesting in the way of presenting the contents...), requires some background in theory of electrical circuits and systems

An art critic's comparison.
This really is an art critic's comparison and "theoretical development of a character" type of book. It is about Kokopelli and how a particular artist sees his use in ceremonial art of the past. It contains excellent illustrations in color. .

Hill and Montoya Draw Upon the Universal Appeal of Kokopelli

The figure of Kokopelli is found chipped into desert stone at various ancient sites throughout the American Southwest. It also appears in contemporary forms, painted on canvas, etched into glassware, printed on Christmas cards, and sculpted into candelabra, in presentations that range from the holy to the kitschy. What energizes the frequent appearances of the enigmatic hunchbacked flute player? The authors suggest that the centuries-old drawing power of this archetypal figure may lie in both its protean nature and its spiritual origins.

Hill acquaints the reader with images of Kokopelli as hunter, warrior, healer, gambler, fertility bringer, and even mythological insect who appears in some Native American accounts of the Creation, by presenting a broad review of the available literature on the topic. Wisely, he presents Kokopelli's multiple manifestations without seeking to narrow them to a definitive representation that would deny the complexity of the image. His smart narrative contains a mine of information that yields a pocketful of nice nuggets with each perusal; and his readable style turns them up without a lot of digging.

In stunning visual images that complement the text, Montoya presents Kokopelli as an avatar figure who both generously offers and thankfully celebrates the receipt of the gifts of a bountiful earth. To Hill's scholarly analysis, Montoya adds the cultural insights of one steeped in the kind of ceremonialism from which Kokopelli likely first emerged, and the imagination of a skilled contemporary artist. Their collaboration is a complimentary one in which the text illuminates the paintings, and the visual images add an intuitive content that transcends the text.

Hill is frank about his intention to produce a hybrid text that is concurrently an art book, a study of Native American spiritual beliefs, and a review of Kokopelli literature. The challenge in such an undertaking is to do it seamlessly. How that challenge was met produced my only caveat, and a small one considering the ambitious nature of the project. The book's divisions make it seem a bit episodic, particularly the insertion of a short chapter by art critic James Bialac that might better have been placed in an appendix. At the same time, the holistic approach to the book's subject matter is an essential part of what makes it original and interesting. Hill and Montoya have added an important spiritual component to an art/cultural study without becoming simplistic or sappy, a laudable achievement.

Kokopelli Ceremonies provides some satisfying depth in an area in which much of the available material only skims the surface. Although the book is brief, it contains a well-selected bibliography for those readers who wish to further pursue the elusive Kokopelli through the avenue of cultural studies. For the text-challenged and those who prefer to see beyond black and white, sixteen gorgeous color plates provide a visual feast. Leave Kokopelli Ceremonies out where you can reach for it often--you'll probably make frequent journeys following the elusive notes of the ancient pied piper.

CHRISTY AWARD WINNER--WESTERN STYLE
A poignant, sometimes humorous, portrayal of a prodigal son's return home after the mysterious receipt of the family heritage rifle, with no note of explanation. A winner for both male and female readers.

Superbly crafted and deeply inspiring
When the Civil War devastated the Fortune family of Corvell County, Texas (including the deaths of his mother and twin sisters), Samuel headed out for Indian Territory of what would one day become Oklahoma and took up the outlaw life of robbing banks, trains and freight companies. Inevitably this led to prison. Upon his release and more hardships to come, Samuel discovered that the only way to escape from his unhappy and dangerous life was to acknowledge how far he had departed from God, to make amends for past wrongs, reconcile with those who had loved him, and to accept God's grace, love, and forgiveness. The Long Trail Home is a superbly crafted, deeply inspiring, thoroughly entertaining, highly recommended novel played out against the backdrop of the American frontier.

FAMILY DRAMA IN THE OLD WEST
Brazos Fortune's son, Todd, must distinguish himself in order to find his own identity. That's even harder to do when he settles down to the family business. I could relate to having to cope in the shadow of a strong personality. A well done story about a great family!

Timeless Truths
The lawlessness we saw through the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks make the message of Western novels even more pertinent. In Shadow of Legends, Stephen Bly has given us an entertaining yet challenging book which shows how a Christian answers evil. The book also provides messages on defining your own identity and finding contentment in your negative circumstances. Though his novel's setting was more than a hundred years ago, Bly has done a great job in communicating these timeless truths.

let the tears fall
I find this book incredible. After reading this book I have discovered that weeping clenses us from the inside, and the spiritual implications are simply that we become healthier. Our emotions were never given to us to be repressed, but they were given to us so that we could communicate how we feel. God wants us to be honest and good stewards of our feelings, because as Christians we glorify God through them. Tears are not meant for our hurt but for our resoration through the Holy Spirit. That seems to be His method of clensing the soul.

Oh my gosh!!!
Absolutely incredible. I was totally blown away by the richness and the passion by which Stephen Hill writes, "People don't need to hear our sermons. They need to see them dripping down our faces." Hill writes about a few of the stages that led to the great Pensacola revival that seized Brownsville Assembly of God church. If you have a desire to see God move mightily in your area, "Time to Weep" is a MUST READ. Explore what it means to weep for your sins, and dive into the passion and realism of weeping for others. Definitely 5 stars here.

the wisdom of Box and songs too!
George Box is one of the statistical giants of the 20th Century. He started his career in chemical engineering in England where he learned the importance of experimental design and statistical methods. He came to the US in 1953 and spent time at North Carolina State College and later came back to be part of the statistics group at Princeton. After that he founded the Department fo Statistics at the University of Wisconsin. This history and other important career decisions icluding the founding of Technometrics are detailed in the brief section "My Professional Life" that he wrote for this volume.

Box's contributions to statistics are diverse and large. He developed many practical statistical designs including the central composite design. He is responsible for evolutionary operation and wrote a book on it with Norman Draper. He has also made major contributions to response surface methodology.

With Gwilym Jenkins he systematized the application of the ARIMA models and led the development of software for easy application of these model building techniques. He championed the concept of parsimonious models and insisted that model building should be an iterative and continually evolving technique. He contributed to the area of control through his stochastic time series models and found ways to incorporate it in manufacturing process control.

With David Cox he developed the Box-Cox family of transformations. These simple power transformation can be used to make the data have an approximate normal shape. he gave a prescription for how to estimate or pick the power to use based on the data.

These enormous contributions can be found in the volumes of collected works that Tiao and others have edited. His contributions can also be seen from his books on evolutionary operation, time series analysis, automated process control, empirical model building and response surfaces, and practical experimental designs ("Statistics for Experimenters").

However in the decades of the 80s and 90s from age 60 to 80, instead of retiring, George Box took on the challenge of developing a center for quality and productivity at the University of Wisconsin. This volme, edited by Tiao, Bisgaard, Hill, Pena and Stigler provides a collection of articles by Box. These are mostly articles written in the 1990s covering the subjects of A) continuous process improvement, B) designing experiments to gain quality information, C) sequential investigation and discovery (including response surface methods), D) quality control and E) learning how to identify and reduce variation or be less sensitive to it by constructing robust processes (i.e. processes not sensitive to minor changes in process parameters). The articles are mostly directed toward quality issues and are mostly articles that were published in the 1990s or 2000 with a few from the 80s. Some are important technical contributions but many are also very philosophical.

George Box is one of the great thinkers of the 20th century and his philosophy on statistics and scientific inference is as important as his many technical contributions. There are 46 articles in total 4 on topic A, 12 on B, 10 on C, 11 on D and 9 on E. Each topic area has a brief introduction identifying a unifying theme in the papers in that section.

Box has a terrific sense of humor that often comes out in his lectures and sometimes in his writings. One gets a good appreciation of it by reading the three songs on statistics that are included in Part F of the book. This is only a sample of several that he has written that are parodies of familiar tunes. Of these three my favorite is "There's no theorem like Bayes theorem" to the tune of "There's no business like show business."

There is a nice bibliography in the back of the book that is followed by a biography on Box and a list of his books and articles published between 1982 and 1999. This includes 3 books and 91 articles! Believe it or not he published even more in his earlier years.
