book of hope for the storms of life
How can one thank an author they have never met face to face that has helped you get through a storm of life? While volunteering at Ground Zero as a Red Cross nurse, I was given this book of hope while I was mentally overloaded and feeling everyones pain in a real physical way. This book soothes the soul and if one will let it, it can start the healing process. I have brought out this small book many times as the wounds keep opening. I have found peace, and comfort.I recommend this book to be bought and given to any that are going through any kind of a personal "storm" whether it be emotional, physical, or spiritual.
As you give this gift, whisper a prayer for the miracles that will take place. Thank you Cecil Kemp for the healing words. I am writing this with tears in my eyes and cheecks as I think of my time at ground zero and being introduced with your book of healing. May you go with God.

A Book Of Hope For The Storms Of Life
My son and the author of this book, wrote this book to help give me comfort after my husband and Cecil, Jr.'s dad passed away. I was going through a hard time coping with the loss of my husband of 49 years. Not only did this book help me understand God has a plan for our life, but in death he helps us to understand by learning to trust in Him. We will have storms in our life, but there is hope. This book was inspirational.

A Book Of Hope For The Storms Of Life
Cecil Kemp, Jr. was a student of mine. After reading this book, I felt the information contained in it was invaluable. Cecil Kemp, Jr. is an excellent author, who relates well to others in coping with the trials of life.

Taking Xavier's Class at Columbia? This book is a must
Hi, I ran into this book while taking Professor Sala-I-Martin's Intermediate Macro class at columbia. I found it to be much clearer and useful as compared with the assigned textbook. His final is impossible without it, get it early and follow along when he discusses the Solow Swan model, Endogenous growth rate, etc. You'll thank me when you ace the final.

One of the principal books about the modern economic growth.
"Economic Growth" by Robert Barro and Xavier Sala-I-Martin is one of the best book about economic growth theory who I've seen. This book together with "Advanced Macroeconomics" by David Romer and "Endogenous Growth Theory" by Philippe Aghion and Peter W. Howitt are the principal books about all the modern economic growth theory. I recommend very much this book. PD. I bought the last book, sorry.

Wonderful!
This book is obviously the product of two great teachers! Everything is very clearly explained. There are some very nice details about conditional convergence across the US states. If you're looking to augement your economics knowledge after taking an intermediate macroeconomics class, short of actually taking one of these author's classes, this would definitely be the way.

The Carvers Save the Day
The Ghost of Windy Hill is a good book for all ages. It is not scary, but not funny. If you like books with surprises, this is a good one. There are a lot of characters in this book who are very nice, especially the Carvers. This book take place in the country outside of Boston in the year 1851.

Clyde Robert Bulla is a great author!
I have read the book Ghost of Windy Hill about 5 times and it never gets boring. One time I read it twice in a week. So it dosn't take very long to read. I have also read Aanother of his book i read Ghost Town Treasure. That i read in a few hours and it was as good as Ghost of Windy Hill.

My favorite book when I was was a child!
This was my most favorite book when I was in the 3rd thru 5th grade! It has a great plot & a great twist at the end of the story.

Excelent reading!!
I have read several books about the Sioux Wars so i wasnt really sure i wanted to read another one, but Mr Robinson's book is fantastic. He writes taking in consideration that the reader doesnt know anything about the topic so he explains with good accuracy terms and places like no other author. The author is bold and right on the money when it comes to point a finger at somebody, like for example the stupidity of the Army officers.I found that the interviews and research the author made for this book are very good, especially from the indians perspective. The only thing i didnt like is the fact that Mr Robinson doesnt go into details when it comes to Crazy Horse.I would have loved to read more about Crazy Horse part in this Wars.Otherwise this is an excelente book!

An excellent recounting
This is by far the best book on the Army's conflict with Native Americans since "Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee". It treats the material as a campaign rather than a series of seperate battles, so that Little Big Horn is treated as part of a whole. The author also describes the personalities and deeds of several Indian characters, not just Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse. This is an eye-opening recounting of an important part of US history and a look at one of the greatest guerilla forces ever to wage war against the American Army.

a first rate overview of the Sioux War of 1876
Rather than concentrate on one battle or campaign, Robinson sets the stage for the reader to follow the movement of all the actors playing a role in the drama across the seasons of the war. I used this book as an orientation to the conflicts of 1876 prior to a trip to Wyoming, Montana and the Dakotas to visit battle sites while on vacation. My trip was greatly enriched by reading this volume first. You can find more concentrated studies of particular engagements and the biographies of the participants that will offer deeper insights into the war, but for one overall narrative that provides the reader with the flavor of the contemporary army and Indian experience, here's my choice.

A must read, very insightful, helpful and comprehensive
If you or someone you care about is dealing with mild traumatic brain injury or concussions this is an excellent book. The technical aspects of brain injury are explained in plain english. The remainder of the book is well written and insightful. The book explains a very inexact ailment in very understandable terms. It discusses "post concussive syndrome" with the its hundreds of different symptoms which appear and disappear. This is one book that will help everything come together in a clear and concise way.

AN EXCELLENT READ ON A TOUGH SUBJECT.

What a godsend!
The bad news is that I didn't find this book till 1 1/2 years after my husband's brain injury. The GOOD news is that I found this book, just 1 1/2 years after my husband's brain injury! I'm insisting that his children and my siblings all read it. Our anger and frustration over the myriad changes in him have nearly ended our 20-year marriage. This book is giving us the information we need to begin asking the right questions and finding some answers. Thank God, we are not alone in this.

coping?
This book was recommended to me by a referral clinic as one of two volumes that are helpful in explaining brain injury.

Coping with Mild Traumatic Brain Injury is an excellent and informative book. It is very difficult to find a comprehensive explanation for the symptoms of tbi much less a solution for dealing with the problems.

Before coping can begin identifying the problems is necessary. This volume provided enlightenment and hope to me where years of seeking treatment have left a sense of doubting my own perceptions and reality and sense of self.

Just to know "yes, this IS happening to me" has made a world of difference in the experience of recovering in what is often a lonely, frustrating and disappointing journey.

This account by someone who has experienced brain and psychic trauma has a quality of truth that cannot be mistaken.

Southern Humor, Wit, and Charm At It's Best
My North Carolina grandmother, born in 1888, read the 12 Miss Minerva series books to me when I was a young child in the 50's. She brought the antics of William Green Hill, Jimmy Garner, Frances, Lina, Wilkes Booth Lincoln, Aunt Cindy, Pilljerk Peter, Aunt Peruny Pearline to life, and I can still hear the words ringing in my ears as she read this book in the dialect of the southern Negro. Some feel that these aren't politically correct books for today's youth, but I feel that there are some innocent truths to be learned from reading these books, that come from the mouths of the children in them. They show how easily children of all races get along when the prejudices of their elders aren't present. The real life character upon which these books are based is William Green Hill who died at 64, the son of a prominent Tennessee physician Dr. Lafayette Hill. His sister, Mrs. S. A. Hamilton had not seen her brother in 15 years when he died of a heart attack alone and penniless in an empty railroad coal car on the outskirts of Pueblo, Colorado. My grandmother clipped the small article from the newspaper about Mr. Hill, which I have kept in my copy of the first of the books which were written about his life. The first book, Miss Minerva and William Green Hill, was originally written by Frances Boyd Calhoun who died, and was continued by Emma Speed Sampson, who wrote the sequel Billy and the Major, Miss Minerva's Baby, Miss Minerva on the Old Plantation, Miss Minerva Broadcasts Billy, Miss Minerva's Scallywags, Miss Minerva's Problem, Miss Minerva's Vacation, Miss Minerva's Neighbors, Miss Minerva's Mystery, Miss Minerva Goin' Places, and one other title. There also is a book named Miss Minerva's Cookbook which was so rare that a copy of this book is going for $1,000 at rare out of print used book stores. I certainly love to see that the University of Tennessee has brought back the first of this series, and I would love to see them bring back to print the rest of the series for a new generation of children to enjoy and understand the happiness and delicate, intricate balance that exists in childhood play between children of all races.

The "Miss Minerva" series was one of my favorites as a child
I read all 9 books in this series and enjoyed the humor of Billy's exploits with his Aunt Minerva and the neighborhood children. The children of this era made their own entertainment, played "pretend" and spent a lot of time outdoors-life was rather pastoral. However, Billy managed to keep everyone hopping. I'd describe the book as an early "Little Rascals" of the South. Well written, humorous and filled with the innocence of the era. Billy and his friends seem to have to learn everything the hard way!! Historically, it occurs in an era of segregation; however, it also demonstrates that children accept each other far more easily than adults do.

Miss Minerva and William Greenhill
I read this book as a very young child and, as I collect old children's books, ran across it in my searches. Of course, I read it again and enjoyed it even more this time. I suppose it is"politically incorrect" now, but that's the way things were then--right or wrong. I still find the book both funny and sweet. I had no idea that someone had created a series after Mrs. Calhoun's death. I would love to find some of them.

Ever wondered about the name?
This is one of Hill's better Dalziel and Pascoe novels, marred only by the author's continued insistence on showing off his extensive knowledge of the English language. It may be heresy, but I rather prefer the TV adaptations, which tighten and speed things up a bit while keeping the essence.

Ever wondered why Dalziel's name is pronounced "De-ell"? It's a Scottish surname. At one point in the series we are told he was born and brought up in Yorkshire of Scottish parents (now there's a nature-nurture mix to conjure with - growing up in Scotland I was told that a Yorkshireman was really just a Scotsman with the generosity removed!). In the original Gaelic the name has a character that early typographers though looked like a "z" and rendered it so in print, even though it was not pronounced like that. Other Scottish surnames have undergone a similar fate - Menzies should actually be prounced "Ming-iss" and still is, in Scotland.

'Fat Andy' and Pascoe - best modern mystery duo!
It is so great to pick up a modern mystery from Hill that has current problems mixed well with the British linguistic skills and which returns to the lucid story-telling origins of British writers of this particular genre. After all, for most intents and purposes, the British were the ones who invented and solified this genre, and who have provided the best examples of excellent writing in it. Hill will probably have his name added to this distinquished group. Other reviewers have complained about Hill's tendency to 'show off' his language skills, but it is not really about showing off. It's about the quality of education that is achieved for many (if not most) in England in comparision to what we achieve here. I suspect if educators (I am one) in the U.S. spent as much time on increasing the reading and writing levels of our own students, the other subject matters (science, math, history, geography) would be easier to reach literacy skills in. An author of the level of Reginald Hill indicates that reading is a skill practiced way beyond that required in the states...to the point that reading becomes an essential part of the life, so this type of language useage comes naturally to Hill. If only we could achieve this in the U.S.!

Lately, I've been coming across many books, both fiction and nonfiction with information concerning World War I. I get the feeling I'm being pointed in this direction, and I am not sure why. I always thought from my previous historical research that the Civil War in the U.S. was the bloodiest and most disgusting war...all this input concerning WWI is rapidly changing my mind. This is one of the first books that have brought the political climate of that time period (as well as the political/social feelings towards WWI currently in Britain) to the fore. I agree with Hill that the mindset of the politicians and generals who manipulated the young men and media at home for their own purposes, belong up there with Hitler and other tyrants who used their own people for the wrong reasons. I think at this point, I can safely add to this group of despicable people, the corporate monsters from ENRON, WORLDCOM, and other American corporations who put profit and greed, before moral standards.

Actually, we do Hill's story a disservice when we only include Dalziel and Pascoe as the main protagonists in Hill's plot devices. I am finding out that the sargeant, Wield, is equally as necessary in many of the stories and he provides great insight into his boss and his friend, as well into the regular folks he has more direct contact with. Ellie, Pascoe's wife, seems to be becoming more important in some stories, and she definitely is involved in this one. Her insight as a woman with social causes provides not only background, but also provides a touch of relative normality for Pascoe. Her insight into his mind and his obsessions, allows her to provide tidbits of information that he can use to make informed decisions. Even Dalziel grudgingly admires her input in certain cases.

Having worked in medical labs, I am all too aware of the rabid cause of animal rights groups. I was lucky in that my work was done on human cells, rather than animals (I purposely avoided it as I too love animals but I also realized medical strides often cannot be made without some animal experimentation). The plot device in this book where someone sought to make use of animal activism to cover up scandals makes an incredible amount of sense. With all the corporate irresponsibility being shown in the U.S. at this point, it should not surprise anyone to find companies using animal rights and environmentalism to cover up their own wrongs.

This was a wonderful read...thoroughly enjoyable all the way through!

There's nowt better than a Dalziel/Pascoe mystery
Reginald Hill brings serious talent to bear on the often-debased mystery genre. His stories never fail to compel the reader's attention and (often) emotion, and in "Fat Andy" Dalziel he has created a monumental (sorry) character. And that's not to downplay Pascoe or Wieldy -- but Dalziel's shadow is a hard one to get out of.

"The Wood Beyond" is a particular favorite of mine. I thought that the WWI and present-day plots were extraordinarily well tied together, not always the case in stories using "time-shift"techniques. It's further proof that Reginald Hill is one of the best writers -- not just mystery writers -- working today.

Killer
Each time a re-read a chapter of this book, it is further enriching. I had no background in business finance and only an introductory accounting background prior to reading this book. It is approachable and quite deftly introduces one to the field of finance. Broad coverage of major topics such as financial forecasting, management of growth, debt vs. equity, financial instruments, valuations, discounted cash flow, and drawing from financial statements. Higgins places things in proper context and builds upon knowledge at good, steady pace.

The best introduction to basic financial management.
This book is required at Harvard Business School and is used at top B-schools and bank management trainee programs around the country.
I used the book during my MBA program, even though it was not required. My study group members always requested that I bring it to group meetings. I even had a classmate approach the author (who happens to be my father) at my graduation and ask for his autograph.
The book introduces complex finance concepts like net present value in non-academese language and the real-world examples reinforce the concepts.
I strongly recommend this textbook to anyone preparing to enter business school or embarking on a job in financial analysis.
Professor Higgins is a beloved teacher at his home institution, the University of Washington. You can share in a little of his vast expertise and gift for teaching by reading his book, Analysis for Financial Management.

A useful handbook that simplifies complex finance
This book was required in my William & Mary MBA program. It covers everything from discounted cash flows to ratio analysis to business valuation. My brother liked it so much he "stole" if for months. I took it back and now he wants it for his Christmas gift. So, here I am buying it for him. The net present value of this book is -- real high:) I highly recommend it for business owners or anyone involved in finance and accounting.

The Odbc Solution: Open Database Connectivity in Distributed Environments/Book and Disk (McGraw-Hill Series on Computer Communications)

Everything you need, in one handy package
This hardback text is one of the best database API books that I have in my collection. It is well laid-out and it has examples.

This book is laid out in the order statements are used, with the necessary create and destroy statements together. It starts with connecting to the database, moves to statement execution, and rounds out with retrieving your results. There are of course necessary chapters on creating tables and dealing with transactions.

Each ODBC API call is accompanied with a list of appropriate parameters, return values, and errors.

ODBC Database API's are used in layers:

To Setup: Allocate Environment, Allocate Connection, Connect, ...

To Shutdown, reverse everything: ... Disconnect, Deallocate Connection, Deallocate Environment.

The best book on writing ODBC applications
With the ODBC API you are given a whole lot of notes? But how do you combine those notes to write a symphony? This is the only book on the market which really shows you how. It consists of a detailed ODBC reference and highly useful sample code that shows how to take the API calls and make an application out of them.

The calls are grouped in logical sequences, each call is thoroughly described, and then an example of a program that uses that call (and other calls) is given.

The writing is extremely clear. The presentation is excellent. The book is extremely well organized.

It does not assume any prior knowledge of ODBC though it assumes you know how to program C.

C is the only language used in the book. The use of ODBC in other languages such as Visual Basic is not discussed.

Though this book is old; I cannot recommend it too highly. I've used it before and I'll use it again.

About the best you can do outside of the classroom
I had a situation come up where I needed to access an Oracle 7 stored procedure that returned output parameters and no results set. The Microsoft Visual C++ CRecordset classes don't handle that situation very well. The only solution was to drop down into ODBC API calls. I struggled until I found this book. It takes a lot of the mystery out of an extremely complex API. It pretty much rides around in my backpack everywhere I go now!
