We use this book everytime we go out for dinner!
Having read lots of "guidebooks" about cities both in the states and in other countries, I can confidently recommend this book as one of the most comprehensive and usable! As residents of the Twin Cities, our household brings out this book everytime we want to know more about a building we've seen, when we want to know how late the zoo is open, or when we can't decide where to have a great dinner out. It is fun to read, very well organized by areas of the cities, and includes great information, such as history of neighborhoods and buildings, menu recommendations for restaurants, and where to find "hidden" locales. Excellent!

This is a great book
Unlike all the other Minneapolis guide books i saw. this one has an entire chapter about the mall of america (which is the whole reason for our trip to minneapolis), but it lists and describes many of the stores (especially the unusual and unique ones), and it has interesting facts about the mall. The book also has great maps. And the best part is, it color codes it's entries. Parks and outdoor activities are printed in green, hotels are in blue, resturaunts in red, etc. This book was a huge help in planning what to do and how long to stay.

Finally!
Beautiful concept, beautifully done using the Universal Rider Waite and in a lovely large box that contain them. Each card
has a smaller Universal rider waite on it and beside it, an accompanying meditation.
For the tarot lover, a wonderful tool for deepening your connection with the 78 cards. Using the affirmations are a great idea for meditation purposes and to gain emotional clarity
when doing a reading or a one a day card method. Deck comes with an introduction and explanatory information booklet by the author that is included.

A Powerful tool designed to promote positive growth & change
This oversized deck will please all who are into self-exploration through the Tarot. The deck is illustrated by Pamela Colman Smith and recolored by Mary Hanson-Roberts.

Each of the 78-cards has a small rendition of the images from the Universal Waite Tarot Deck. The larger portion of each card is devoted to appropriate affirmations to go along with the imagery of that particular card. Appropriate, in that the affirmations, mirror quite nicely the popular interpretation of the Tarot. Text writer, Sally Hill does an outstanding job of writing affirmations for each of the 78 cards.

There can be some very difficult images to handle in the Tarot. For example, the Ten of Swords, is traditionally depicted as ten swords through the back of an individual, indicative of treachery of some kind around the querent, or a feeling that all are against an individual. It is hard to see anything positive when looking at that image. But Hill manages to take this image and show the positive chances for growth to occur under these trying circumstances. She assigns the card affirmations, such as, "I am dealing with negative thoughts that pin me down; I am seeking release from inner confusion and conflicts", and, "I am finding ways to recover my energy and rise to new life". Also, the Court Cards are thought by some to be the most difficult cards to interpret in the deck. The affirmations Hill associates with the Court Cards provide greater insights into these cards.

Using Tarot Affirmations promotes a greater understanding of Tarot imagery and will give depth to the traditional meanings behind the cards. This deck is useful for daily self-analysis, meditation, or to delve deeper into the mysteries of the Tarot. Beginners and advanced students alike, will benefit and grow from the positive messages displayed on these Tarot cards.

Storyline ....
Since Amazon hasn't posted an editorial review, here's the description from the back of the book to help you decide if this book is for you: "With its jumble of grey wings and towers and teh river winding clear below ... into its dark and brooding halls comes Honor Thwaite ... bride of Richard Sawtrey. Now, Honor was mistress of the manor -- a house of terrible secrets that would not remain unspoken. Of Mrs. Anna, Richard's mother, who had murdered her stepson so that Richard could be heir. Of Richard, who had bedded the tavern wench and sired many bastards. Of Francis Wolffe, the Daneclere bailiff who would do anything to have his way. And of Honor herself. She had been warned to never again cross the ford to the Thwaite farm until a time of gravest trouble or danger. Now that time had come." A great tale of historical, gothic suspense.

The Lost Grail
The Last Grail Keeper was written by Pamla Smith Hill. Felicity came upon a great and powerful legend and she couldn't hold this power(Felicity a character). I thought the most unusual part of this story was when Morgan le Fay brought Felicity back to the King Author time. Felicity was in a long black hall. Felicity keep walking thorough this long black hall. Until she saw light. it was a fire, she saw some of the people she knew. Mostly the setting takes place in present day Glastonbury England. Most of the main character were Felicity her self, Felicity mom, and Miss Nimute. the story is told mostly by Felicity her self. By changing history the Holy Grail is in the future. which it should be in the past. A part of the story that was a theme was, Felicity had to bring the holy Grail in time. Reading this book was confusing but after reading for time it starts to make sense, that's why I say this book was enjoyable book, to read about the Grail.

Twenty-First Century Grail
The Last Grail Keeper by Pamela Smith Hill is an exciting adventure book told by an average twenty-first-century girl, Felicity Jones.Although she doesn't know it, Felicity is part of a long family line known as the Grail Keepers. This is a family of women who are destined to protect the Holy Grail. Now, the Grail may fall into the wrong hands and Felicity realizes that she must save it. With a little help from the past, she might be able to pull it off. This was an awsome book1 It is appropriate for anybody of any age who wants to learn a little more about King Arthur or just wants to enjoy a great book!

The Last Grail Keeper
I recently read The Last Grail Keeper and I thought it was amazing! I literally couldn't put the book down. I can't wait for Pamela Smith Hill's next book!

Voice from the Border

An interesting, romantic Civil War novel
While a lot of Civil War novels tend to focus on very well known battles or on the East coast, "A Voice From The Border" takes place in one of the most torn states during the war: Missouri, where Unionists and Secessionists battled each other and set up rival governments.

"A Voice From The Border" is about fifteen year old Reeves, whose father joins the Confederate side during the war. Reeves' neighbors are divided over the war, and even she is not entirely sure. Reeves' eleven year old sister, Lucy becomes friends with a staunchly pro-Union woman, Mrs. Brown, much to her family's distress. Reeves herself falls in love with Percy, a charming young Union officer.

Reeves' story is interwoven with quotes from writers such as Keats, George Eliot and Shakespeare and military dispatches. While "A Voice From The Border" starts out a bit slow and confusing, it gets much better later on as Reeves struggles with an increasingly difficult life. The only thing that's regrettable is that the romance between Reeves and Percy never really develops, though that is for a purpose. It's a very different take on a popular subject.

Awesome
This book was Awesome. One night I read it and I cried the whole time. It was sad but good. I highly recomend this book. If you have the chance READ IT!

A Voice From the Border
It was a wonderful book. Even if you are not interested in the Civil War, you cannot put this down. It's a great book for all ages. It has both interesting historical facts and human-interest issues.

The Dubious Hills

Not what I had hoped/ expected/ wanted...
My milage varies considerably from the other reviewers of this book. I finished it, but resentfully.

I bought it because it was inexpensive and I didn't like Dean's _Tam Lin._ I wanted to give her another shot. I also was hoping, thinking that it would be like _The Giver._ Superficially, it is, but then it gets into the whole werewolf: should we or shouldn't we question. To me, it was a silly question, a silly simple society and characters I found I didn't care about.

Rather than this I recommend Peter David's _Howling Mad._ It's about a wolf that gets bitten by a werewolf and becomes a man every full moon.

a fascinating exploration of knowledge
A wonderful rural fantasy in which a small hilly community is the result of an experiment that renders all the inhabitants with the ability to only know one thing for certain. Only one person in the village knows the proper name for things, only one person knows, truly, what is beautiful, only one person knows when something is broken, and only one person knows how to fix something. People are unsure, dubious, about everything else. Children are not born with their knowledge, they grow into it, and sometimes the revelation can be painful. Arry is the 14-year old physici of the village, the only person that knows when something is broken, she feels the pain of others and must tell them when they are hurting. This is a lot for a 14 year old to deal with. Since her parents disappeared, she must also look after her younger brother and sister, quiet Beldi and spirited Con. She has her hands full, but there are other problems, she feels as if Beldi is hurting, but nothing seems broken. Who's jurisdiction is such a thing? Can she help him, who would know what is wrong? Beldi, of course, is hurting at the absence of his parents, but Arry does not have the 'knowledge' to know this.

The precise nature of knowledge in this story creates the opportunity for some wonderful jokes. There is a constant going from person to person in the village verifying information, as no one can be sure if what someone else says is the truth, there is the perpetually dubious reply 'who says so?', the response of a taunting child in our world, but an earnestly serious response in these dubious hills. When Arry is frustrated, she curses by saying 'Doubt!' and calls the damnable family cats that get into everything 'doubtful' because they are always under her feet. Doubt, of course, is the most frustrating and tentative thing about this hilly place, rendering it perfect for cussing. Dean also takes the lines from poetry by Keats, Gerald Manly Hopkins etc and makes it into the little spells children under 5 use to help out around the village. The lines of such familar poetry used for the little magic that is used in the village is a homely and lyrical touch. the magic is not invasive, it adds just enough of an otherworldly quality to this wonderfully realised world.

Dean is an exceptional world builder, right up there with Ursula Le Guin, but the thing that I love is the minature size of her worlds. They are child-sized worlds for adults. She treats the presence of evil intelligently and delicately in her work, understanding that it is a complex part of being human. Someone in one of the other reviews here critisied the ending of the Dubious Hills, but if you don't appreciate the ending, you've missed the point of the whole book. They have found a way to escape the doubt that plagues their lives, and think how gratifying it is to know things for certain. I think the Dubious Hills is a critical utopia, and an exceptional exploration of knowlege. I'm agog that such a simple story can have such a deeply philosophical edge to it. Dean is, in truth, a master storyteller, she can weave such complex and delightful worlds in so few words. Her language is deft, quiet, simple. But she creates complex, realistic places and situations. This is a superb book.

Beautiful
I've read it about five times so far, and I know I will keep picking it up every once in a while. It's a seductive world Dean creates. And unlike most fantasy writers, Dean does not write for the lowest common denominator. This is literature.

A while ago, when my mother (an English major and Yeats fan who often asks me when I plan to read real books instead of fantasy) was desperate for something to read, I handed her this book.

She loved it.

Outdated Advice
I'm getting married again after 20 years of being single & was looking for relevant advice. It was not to be found in this book. It's a very traditional stodgy book for people who are afraid to break the rules. There are better choices out there. Hint: look for books with the word "grownup" in the title!

Finally the help I needed!
This insightful book is filled with wonderful, practical tips. It is written in a clever, entertaining and straightforward manner that is most refreshing in comparison to the other bridal self-help books. I especially appreciated the websites offered for further assistance. As an "Encore Bride", I say BRAVO!

Just In Case
I've only been married once and have no imminent plans to do it again. However, once I picked up Nettleton's book I couldn't put it down. It seems like a terrific resource not just for the second (or third, or fourth) time around, but even for those taking the leap for the first time. The author makes all the details seem actually manageable through the stories and checklists and her unique insights. I have a copy JUST IN CASE I might need it in the future as well as to help me guide friends and family who are going through the process.

A great gift for a family new to the area!
I've lived in the Chicago area for 20 years, and there were a few things in here that I didn't know about, such as the American Girls Shop/ play in Chicago. But by and large, most of the Chicago area stuff I knew about. Where it really comes in handy is that many of the areas featured are within a few hours drive. Great if you're going to visit family and need something for the kids. We found all kinds of neat stuff about one of our favorite vacation spots in Door County, Wisconsin that we otherwise would have missed. One area that could stand to be improved - they have Chicago, then Northwestern Illinois (Galena etc). What about the 'burbs? There's a few little things here and there, but otherwise the whole Chicagoland area outside of the city limits is missed. I would also like to see more on restaurants. Chicago has a TON of restaurants, including the upscale but very cool Chicago Firehouse (actually built into a firehouse, complete with pole - saw Mayor Daley there!) and there are only 7 mentioned. All in all though, a good buy, and as I said, would make a great gift for a family with kids new to the area.
