A great book on the first year of the Korean War
You've heard about the journalists embedded with the troops in Iraq and the claims it was the first time this has happened. Perhaps that is true on the grand scale, but they were not the first.

Maggie Higgins, a tough and pretty 29-year-old experienced journalist, caught a one-way flight from Tokyo to Seoul just days after the North invaded the South. One way because the plane was picking up Americans needing to evacuate the war situation.

Maggie accompanied the troops to the front lines, was witness to the first combat death of a 19-year-old boy, was present during the Inchon invasion, and interesting to me, stayed for a short time in a gray missionary home in Taejon (as a missionary child, I grew up in Taejon and will probably die wondering which of those gray homes she stayed in). And she writes about so much more, as well.

The officers weren't happy to have Maggie there, just as the enlisted men didn't mind having her around. Maggie describes her conflicts with the brass and her struggles to get her story out under the most difficult of circumstances.

One paragraph in particular truly grabbed my attention. It is very near the end of the book and reads like a future prediction that has come true fifty years later. You may get the chills.

Of all the books I have read on the Korean War, Maggie's is one of the very best.

It was earth shattering and very enlightening.
I could not put it down. The book is an in depth account of Margueritte Higgins life through some very difficult times of our nation. It encouraged me to try to find other books that Margueritte Higgins has written. Way to go Antoineete May.
