How to be a Man
I have never read a book that left me more feeling that I had experienced the heart of a man. Victor was just that, a simple man who faced unspeakable humiliation and emotional deprivation, and discovered he had the heart of a hero. I have just read this for the second time at age forty, and am overwhelmed by the bravery and fortitude he possessed at such a young age. Victor didn't desire his freedom so he could seek power or riches; he simply wanted to love his wife and provide for his family. This book benefits tremendously from being autobiographical; no one but Victor could convey his heart, and that is what this book is about. Our society would benefit greatly if our young men were taught about a real man like Victor Herman.

If you only read one book in your life, make it this one.
When I cease to breathe one day, and have stood before the Lord, I will seek out Victor Herman from my brothers in heaven, and shake his hand. No other book ever published but the Bible could make one feel so truly grateful for life, love, and freedom than "Coming out of the Ice". If anyone out there knows someone who feels down on their luck, let them read this book. I only wish I could contact his family and express my feelings to them about his book and life. No other book could make me smile and feel blessed every time I eat a potato.

one of the most heroic persons ever
This text should be taught in schools for it is a classical lesson in human spirit and love. The hardships mr. herman endured were truly unbelievable and heart wrenching. I WAS LUCKY ENOUGH TO OBTAIN A COPY OF THE BOOK THROUGH A SISTER-IN -LAWS TIRELESS EFFORT- THANK-YOU KATHY.THE COPY I OBTAINED WAS INSCRIBED IN HAND-WRITING WITH THE FOLLOWING-"TO RAY L. CADDELL WITH THE BEST WISHES OF VICTOR HERMAN 10.26.82". THIS IS CERTAINLY A BOOK I WILL CHERISH AND READ AGAIN AND AGAIN

It grabs you by the.............
I am (very untypically) finding it difficult to express how important this book is. It's a story of incredible endurance and perseverance that will help you stop worrying about most of what's troubling you. It's also a reminder that everyone in the world does not think the same way, that other cultures and countries are very different, and that we truly have something special in the U.S. Our society of law, freedom, independence is very precious -- worth defending against enemies, both foreign and domestic. In a time when some Americans seem bent on giving away our democracy in order to feel safe again, this story is a powerful reminder of why we must all stand up for freedom. And if you think these comments are overblown, read the book anyway and decide again when you're done.

A story of incredible triumph against all odds.
I first read Herman's "Coming out of the Ice" when I was 14 yrs old. Since my first encounter with the book, I have opened the worn covers many times to re-read my favorite excerpts.

I will pass this book on to my children just as my father did to me. For, this story heralds the triumph of the human spirit in the bleakest sittuations imaginable. We must remember the acts of Stalin and other leaders like him. Only by studying the history of human supression can we move forward into the future with the confidence that the human spirit will triumph.

Tongight when you are eating your dinner in a heated home, remember these words, "Two potatoes Papa?"

The Most Incredible Book I Have Ever Read!
I was so moved while reading this book I could hardly eat or sleep. It pounds at your heart and tears your soul and makes you laugh and cry ,like I have never done with reading any book! "This book should be a classic period"! I have read Solzhenitsyn Gulag Archipelago "But" Victor Herman "Coming Out Of The Ice" is number #1. Because I couldnt stop thinking about it for years and years. It leaves an impression at your very soul and you come out alive and on top! Hang on to seat because its a True Story you wont forget as long as you live. Sincerely Chuck Kinney

The book was pretty good
I liked the book, I just think it could of had a little more detail at the very end. But I recommend it.

Moby Dick, by Geraldine McCaughrean
Our family enjoyed this book! It is a wonderful way to share a classic with a child. My 8 year old son loved the beautiful language and the illustrations. This book was perfect for younger readers who may not be ready for the full version. There are great moral lessons covered in Moby Dick. Reading this book provided a natural environment to discuss these important charachter traits. It also allowed us to take off with a further study of whales. A great book!

Children's book
This is an illustrated version of Moby-Dick for children.

A Perfect Introduction to Moby Dick
I recently read this book to my 7th grade lit. class. They loved it and I enjoyed reading it to them. It not only tells the story of Moby Dick,it is a gem unto itself.Ms. McCaughrean's literary language enables the reader (and listener) to have a perfect image of characters and events.

Fabulous retelling and illustrations
Geraldine McCaughrean's retelling of Melville's Moby Dick provides welcome and rewarding access to the plot and characters of this classic. Victor Ambrus' illustrations are wonderful. For several years now we have been turning to this jewel!
