More Voidship
Unlike Dune, this series has been out of print for some time. Shame! No one does it better than Herbert but Dune-Mania has left too much of his best work unread and unknown. Dune was a masterpiece, no question. But the series devolved into action novels - the work of creating his universe did not have to be re-done so the rest was just what happens next (and as Brian continues the series, what happened before). The Voidship series is different. Beginning with Destination: Void, which establishes the premise, each novel must reestablish the world in which it is set. Each set of characters has very new hurdles and new forms of intelligent life(? at least self-awareness) to deal with, each with their own world view. A good marketing bet would be to reintroduce these novels in paperback, capitalizing on the popularity of the Dune series. Let the new generation of sf readers discover the other worlds of Frank Herbert. This review refers to the series - Destination: Void, The Jesus Incident, The Lazarus Effect, and The Ascension Factor

Ascension Factor -- Frank Herbert's other sci-fi world
This is not a story of empire, such as in his great classic series, "Dune; but rather, Herbert and Ransom tell the story of an ill-fated interstellar colonial expedition gone horribly wrong. I am looking for a hard copy of this work because I believe that the general theme of the mega-hit Strategy software game, "Alpha Centauri" is inspired by some of the vicious alien creatures described in Herbert's story of the adaptation of humanity to a brutal alien world. Characterization is a lot deeper than most sci-fi, and the "run around the fortress" scene is something I've remembered for more than two decades since I last read the book. In our world of animated feature films, this would make an incredible movie.

Fossil Hunting- Hide and Seek for the New Millenium
I can remember pouring over the pictures in this book, using my book light, long after the final lights out call from my parents. I traveled back in time, imagining dinosaur growls and prehistoric seashells. By day, I would wander the acreage on my Grandma's farm, scouring the weedy earth for the slightest hint of ancient rock or dinosaur footprint. I wanted my school-age children to enjoy the imaginative art of archeology and paleantology and immediately remembered my favorite book, Fossils: A Guide to Prehistoric Life. I was delighted to see that it was still in print with the same exciting drawings. I immediatley ordered my copy! I then decided to order a copy for my kids! This is a great book that will encourage your children to look beyond the video games and satellite channels and into the fascinating world of the ancient past.

Only For Beginners!
This little guide is the best choice for beginners and children. Book gives the reader an idea about what a fossil is, where and how they can be found, and some information about major fossils. All the pictures are hand drawn illustrations, so that they are not very detailed but still OK for kids and beginers. (I liked it when I was young!)

Get them all!
If I ever got around to teaching a class on Science Fiction, these books would be at the core of the syllabus, along with Brian Aldiss' Trillion Year Spree. James Gunn, more noted for his academic treatment of SF than what he's actually written (of which "The Immortal", which was turned into a TV series, is probably the most famous), puts together an incredible collection of the best that SF has to offer. The first 2 volumes are out of print, but White Wolf (bless 'em!) brought the 3rd back into print and continued to publish Gunn's latest efforts into what started out as a chronological exploration (the first two volumes covered Gilgamesh to Wells to Heinlein) into a showcase of international takes on SF. He prefaces each story with a short essay about its author, and the context which the author's work appears in the framework he presents in each volume. If you're a veteran SF reader you'll be delighted at getting some of the best stories ever written under one cover. If you're new to SF, this is an excellent introduction to the genre and the infinite possibilities of it.

Another Good Sci-Fi book
You might remember me, from the other Road To Science Fiction review. This, like the other, is a good collection. I really enjoyed "The Dance of the Changer and the Three" and it was really good. It really makes you think about what is truly alien. Anyway, this is perfect for any Sci-Fi fan.

Herejes De Dune/Heretics of Dune
Published in Paperback by Ediciones Universal (June, 1984)
Author: Frank Herbert

Most interesting book in the Dune series
_Heretics of Dune_ has been, in my opinion, one of the best books in the Dune series. It's intrigues finally give the reader a deep insight into the workings of the mysterious Bene Gesserit Sisterhood, whose workings have been hidden since the very beginning. The Bene Tleilax are also researched in depth. Throughout the book, I found myself trying to figure out WHAT was going on...only to hit myself in the head at the end in dumb realization. It's like God Emperor in that I wanted to re-read the book to find what I missed...I would, however, suggest going on to _Chapterhouse_ first.

The only bad thing I can think of about Heretics is that Taraza is a flat character. Odrade's sharp contrast in the next book makes up for it, though. _Heretics_ isn't much like the earlier books, but it's a worthy successor to this great series.

If I could give this book six stars, I would!
As a worshiper of all things Dune related, I must say that THE ILLUSTRATED DUNE is one of the best versions of Frank Herbert's DUNE that I have yet incountered.

What makes this book unique in comparison to the many other DUNE books and reprints available, is that this book has many wonderful illustrations. The book offers both color and black and white visuals, which are marvelously adapted to the novel.

Also, there is full glossary in the back of the book. Terms such as "Muad'dib" and "Landsraad" are other such words are diligently defined.

This trade paperback is a credit to the DUNE series.

Fascinating insight into the mind of Herbert
This book of essays shows the mind behind the books. He elaborates on his political, ecological, and philosophical beliefs. I highly recommend this book for anyone who has read Frank Herbert's work and wants to know more about the author

Professional Obstructors Meet Supernova Who Just Needs Love
This was a clever book starring bureaucrats whose job is to intentionally derail governmental productivity and a sweet giant supernova named Caliban who just needs a little love. Together they must stop a wealthy & aristocratic S/M Mistress from destroying interstellar transportation. Reading this book will cause you to giggle like a madwoman.

God's origins
I find the book so deep that only after the 5th reading I understood Herbert was trying to conjure a new way to look onto the creation of our universe from a VERY uncustom perspective. OK, so I read it 5 times, and I'm venturing into my 6th now. Willing to sell me your herbert collection, don;t hesitate to contact. :)

"It is because you speak to me that I do not believe in you"
One of the best short stories I have read, Whipping Star is most memorable for Fanny-May, an extra-dimentional Caleban whose death will mean the end of life. I definitely recomend it for any lover of fiction

Extremely Creative.
This book is so rare to find. I got my hands on a copy a while ago and have been reading it over and over. It is extremely data rich and gets your juices flowing. A true Dune fan will appreciate the depth and painstaking qualities this book has to offer. I suggest it to anybody, even at the price it sells for at e-bay. It gives information ranging from the Assassins Handbook to the Butlerian Jihad and even about the little things like Fremen attire. The book goes even as far as to have two almost complete detailed views on The Fremen Arabic and the Imperial Galach, two splendid languages in the Dune universe. I wish it were more available.
Now everybody should understand that it isn't Canon per cé. You might think it is or you might not. The prequels though don't line themselves up with the Dune Encyclopedia though.

We need a reprint
I read this book back in 1986 and I do agree that a reprint is needed. It allowed a more indepth look at the Dune universe of Frank Herbert. It would be a shame if this book was allowed to crumble to dust, when many fans would like to put it on their shelves. Startrek, Starwars and some other popular series have millions of copies of their own encyclopedias. It's time to bring back the one encyclopedia we want to see again.

Reprint please.
I am a huge fan of the Dune series, including the new prequels, House Atreides and House Harkonnen. I have enjoyed "exploring" the Dune Encyclopedia that I have borrowed from my local library many times. I see that it is an extremely rare book, and now not in print. I am greatly tempted to steal the one remaining copy of the Dune Encyclopedia from my library only because I am afraid that someone else may steal it soon, and I will perhaps never be able to get my hands on it again.

How can we lobby together and demand a reprint for this title?

a great book for herbert fans
if it were anyone else it would be five stars. not quite as intricate or as evolved as dune but just as enjoyable. highly imaginitve at any rate. we do see recurring themes in his work though. the ideas of religion as a human nessicity and the struugle for surrvival against enviroment. all set to a intelligent and imaginitive sci fi background.

Return of Ship
Unlike Dune, this series has been out of print for some time. Shame! No one does it better than Herbert but Dune-Mania has left too much of his best work unread and unknown. This is the best SF book I've ever read.
This book has all of Dune's intricacy of plot and character development but is a far more concise and elegant presentation. It's actually a sequel to Destination:Void, which I found to be interesting but definitely one of his lesser works. Subsequent books along this story line are pretty good too. I highly recommend that you read this book when you have time to finish it fairly quickly. Otherwise, you'll lose track of the characters and their individual plot lines. I once read through the entire SF section of a library (4 books a week for 2 years, ~400+ books) and this book is my favorite SF book.
