A must have book!
This book is wonderful. I paid full price for it and would gladly do so again in order to give it as a gift to others. I highly recomend it.

Fresh and Fun
I haven't met many people who can point out at least ten different plants in the average yard and can tell you how to cook them. Mr. Henderson does an outstanding job of identifying wild, and not-so-wild, edibles common to almost every neighborhood. His recipes are easy to follow and delicious.

Even if you are not planning to run right out to the nearest shrub and harvest its leaves for dinner, I recommend this book. Mr. Henderson's prose is worth reading, whatever the content. His witty, humorous style enlivens a book full of excellent information.

Don't Know What to Do With That Weed? Eat It!
The Neighborhood Forager is a very informative and enjoyable book. It not only tells about the plants in our backyards and by-ways but gives historical information, recipes, warnings and dyer's tips.

Mr. Henderson writes with humor and personal anecdotes which makes the book a good read even if you're not into foraging.

Dawn of the Dinosaurs: The Triassic in Petrified Forest
Published in Paperback by PFMA (2000)
Authors: Robert A. Long, Rose Houk, Doug Henderson, and Treasure Chest Books
Amazon base price: $14.95
Used price: $17.95
Average review score:

A beautifully-illustrated and clearly-written book. Bravo!
220 million years ago, Arizona was near the equator. The trees that became the Petrified Forest grew on a broad, humid floodplain with lakes and swamps, somewhat like today's Amazon basin, or a more tropical Louisiana. Most of the trees that were petrified were araucaria conifers, related to present-day Norfolk Island pines. Swimming in these waters were prong-toothed sharks and thorny-snouted fish. Giant carnivorous metoposaurs lurked in the muddy swamp bottoms, while great crocodilian phytosaurs hunted the first true dinosaurs on dryer land.

Doug Henderson's moody, atmospheric paintings bring these scenes to life. Robert Long, formerly park paleontologist at Petrified Forest, assures scientific accuracy. Veteran natural-history writer Rose Houk brings polish to the text. McQuiston, as usual, provides an elegant book design. This is a beautiful book. It would be a fine companion for (or memento of) a visit to the Petrified Forest, and a nice gift for a dino-lover. Highly recommended.

An outstanding synthesis of art and paleontology.
I recommend this book without hesitation for anyone with an interest in paleontology. It provides a balanced view of all forms of life evident at the Petrified Forest National Monument during the Late Triassic, from fish and invertebrates to plants large and small and on up to the most gruesome ruling reptiles and amphibians.

The text is accurate and precise without ever obtrusively presenting theory as fact. This book will age well as future discoveries further refine or reshape our view of the world at that time.

The pencil (charcoal?) and pastel drawings are scientific illustration at its best, with just enough art and dynamic enhancement to make you feel like you really are skipping nimbly around 20 foot phytosaurs, or swimming with freshwater sharks through prehistoric logjams. Each full page drawing is explained by a facing page. Scale and perspective change early and often, leaving you eager to turn the page for the next visual diorama.

The layout is clean and visually elegant, the text easy on the eyes, and the illustrations are easily seen in light from any angle against the high quality semigloss paper.

I have had this book for ten years now, and I still frequently pick it up and let myself drift backwards in time with it until I am rocking gently in warm clear waters in a far prehistoric time. This is truly a first class publication by the Petrified Forest Museum Association. The authors and Museum Association are to be commended!

Attention Lovecraftian Horror Fans
This is the eleventh book in Chaosium's Cthulhu Cycle series. This volume features tales of Lovecraft's most well-known creation, the octopus-headed entity, Cthulhu. Included are the foundational stories (i.e. "The Call Of Cthulhu" by H.P. Lovecraft and "The Black Island" by August W. Derleth), some rare reprints (i.e. "Some Notes Concerning A Green Box" by Alan Dean Foster) and some interesting new stories of Cthulhu in the modern world (i.e. "Rude Awakening" by Will Murray). In any collection the stories are of varied quality but I enoyed the majority of the works collected. If you are a reader of Lovecraft's Mythos fiction then this is a must for your library.

The New Underground Railroad
Published in Paperback by The New Underground Railroad (2002)
Author: Robert Henderson Jr.
Amazon base price: $14.95
Average review score:

Are you on the right track to success?
According to author Robert Henderson, Jr. "A lack of economic power and lack of control of our economic future has further fueled the lack of awareness of what's going on in African-American communities." Moreover, he intones this caveat, "We're no more than 'Modern day slaves' riding the new underground railroad". These are profound statements that beg for an explanation, but in his new book The New Underground Railroad Mr. Henderson gives a rather unique analogy to convey the concept that "the more things change, the more they stay the same." What then, is the new Underground Railroad? How does it apply to Black folk, and most importantly, what comparisons does it has to the old underground railroad. I found this to be quite interesting if not intriguing to me relative to how he drew parallel to old slave mentality vs. the so-called new slave mentality. Albeit, if readers can get past the many tired clichés and annoying inferences to an old slave to that of the current state of 'forced labor' that permeates our existence, perhaps the author's point of view could be better understood. With such a title, I'd imagine that the purpose intended indeed was to support why one slave is superior or inferior to the other.

Lauded as a beginner's guide to understanding investing, it indeed is elementary in giving posits of truths as it pertain to some of the rudimentary terms and policies that govern the usage of stocks, bonds, and ordinary investment prerogatives. After reading all of the chapters I felt that perhaps more information could have been supplied to give this book more oomph. As such, even beginners should be privy with as much information to insure that they are on the right (railroad) track. Many working Americans are only one or two paychecks away from poverty as Mr. Henderson opines. According to which history book you read supposedly in 1865 Abraham Lincoln freed the slaves from physical bondage with a stroke of the pen. Today, as it is implied in the book, the NEW slave is in economic bondage, and cannot be released by the government. The NEW slave may have a nice house, sports car and a high salary, but he is STILL a slave because he is dependent on his job for his sole economic welfare. He is content with his current uncertain financial status of possible layoffs, down sizing, termination, and corporate reorganization, etc. The NEW slaves can only be freed with financial knowledge. Now comes this author who brings out some interesting facts to illustrate his points.

The New Underground Railroad offers solid financial and living advice in direct, easy-to-understand terms expressly for those who may be looking for a better understanding of financial security. I found it to be rudimentary in the sense that anyone on any level can understand it. It's a good read despite the author's penchant for giving parallels to historic insight for not being a prime candidate for a slave to the system. In the present, he empowers individuals to step away from the slave-master mentality and be energized with the essentials of the 21st Century. One way of doing this is to have a winning attitude, think positive, and to stay focused. Certainly nothing that hasn't been harkened to us before, this author proceeds to say that faith and positive thinking does not work alone with one taking the necessary initiatives to stay tracked. repetitive but in view of the fact that it reads like good news that we slaves (people) need, so be it. I remember another author implying that to stay ahead one must "think and grow rich". This book is along the same mindset. I recommend that you read it to track your destination for a good start!

Right in your face SLAVE, are you ready?
"The New Underground Railroad is about freeing people who need to be economically enlightened, as the author puts it." Henderson built his own financial group on the declaration of Harriet Tubman; "Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death." By the time you have read the last page of The New Underground Railroad, you too will declare the same.

In the present, he empowers individuals to step away from the slave-master mentality and be energized with the essentials of the 21st Century. One way of doing this is to have a winning attitude, think positive, nothing we have not heard before right? Well this author proceeds to say that faith and positive thinking does not work alone, you need to take action. Gain control of your life, gain ownership of some real estate. The modern slave is of no race, creed or color.

Robert Henderson, Jr. exercises the use of cliches and scripture lessons to expound on his point. Sometimes it is repetitive but in view of the fact that it reads like good news that we slaves (people) need, so be it. I believe the one message Henderson wanted us to walk away with is this, we as slaves need to begin taking advantage of America and all of its riches. Think and dream bigger than you ever have before then put those visions into motions.

For the modern day slave
Do not pick up this book to be entertained, it should do more than
that, it should enlighten, empower and educate anyone who wants to
break the chains of Economic Bondage.

It is written by a young man who was so stirred by Harriet Tubman,
that he wanted to empower individuals to step outside of the
slave-master mentality and adapt to the elements of the 21st century.
Because poverty has no color or limitations, it just exists.

The New Underground Railroad is about freeing people who need to be
economically enlightened. It is an escape plan intended to educate
the readers about real estate, stocks, bonds, and mutual funds. And
to teach about the effects of inflation and taxation. The author so
aptly states 'he wants to bring Wall Street to your street'.

Mr. Henderson, Jr. shares some superb investment tips, which should
flag this book as a beginner's guide to understanding investing,
a good reference tool.

Tales of Giant Snakes: A Historical Natural History of Anacondas and Pythons

This book is cool.
this book is cool, i also know the guy, he works at the high schoo

A delightful debunking of the myths about the biggest snakes
Hollywood has not been kind to the long constrictor. In its view, they drop out of trees or rise up out of rivers, big as buses and determined to squeeze the guts out of that hapless human being who has wandered within reach of their treacherous or lecherous (depending upon the sex of the victim) coils. Though big snakes have, in fact, never been much interested in people, people have always been fascinated by them. Sensational stories of villagers squashed and gobbled up by monstrous serpents fill the accounts of explorers and early "naturalists." For all the satisfying fear they engender in far removed readers, such stories do the snakes injustice and divert attention from their remarkable morphology and living habits. These authors are scientists, but they are also literate and obviously snake enthusiasts. So while they stick to the facts, they write clearly and engagingly in defense of remarkable animals who, when it comes to encounters with humans, are much more sinned against than sinning. There are chapters about feeding and breeding of course. But there is also a serious review of the extraordinary stories that impute lengths of sixty or more feet to anacondas and pythons. By the time the myths have been detonated, the terrified lay reader is ready for an honest answer to the question, "How long can a snake grow?" Read the book to find out. But I will say it is longer than some buses.

The Facts and Nothing But the Facts
I purchased this book on a whim, knowing of the authors' credibility. When I got in to it, I realized it was going to be more than I expected. This work discredits one by one all the ridiculous length claims on snakes from around the world. Instead of these (sometimes outrageous) claims, the authors provide you with THE FACTS AND NOTHING BUT THE FACTS!

It is about time herpers spread the honest truth about these species to the general public, rather than the typical "My python should hit thirty-five feet because that's the maximum size!".

This book is an educational experience for ANYONE with an interest in these species or herps in general. I wholeheartedly recommend it!

The human attack accounts are pretty eye-opening, too!
