No other book provides the passion and power for establishing mentoring connections for youth as this book. While not exactly a how-to-do-it book, it provides enough details about the "why" of mentoring and disinguishes clearly between mentoring that has value for youth versus other types of well-meaning approaches. Chapters are included by the most well-known leaders in the youth mentoring field, including Marc Freedman and Bonnie Benard, that are not only informative and inspiring, but can can easily yield guidance for anyone associated with mentoring youth. All the authors agree that the power of mentoring is not in the "program," but in the relationship.

A New Generation of Evidence: The Family Is Critical to Student Achievement

This book as a great tool for every child and education advocate! The style makes it easy to access key information on how to make school a success for all our children. Great gift for every school board trustee, Superintendent, Administrator or other policy maker!
Henderson and Berla make the studies accessible to all, and along the way provide solid evidence that...
- quality parent/family involvement is needed for kids to succeed;
- the highest gains come from more substantial involvement; and
- that administrators' and officials' attitudes and policies make a big difference in how well these programs work.
The introduction provides an easy-access overview. Pull quotes in the study section highlight key findings. Full reference info is given for each study so the reader can find the original study if desired. All in all, a great work!

This book is extraordinary if I do say so myself! Cary Henderson is my grandfather. He was diagnosed with AD soon after I was born. I have no memory of him not having it. It has gotten so bad no that a I feel like he is living, but not really here all the way. He is holding on, though. The pictures taken by Nancy Andrews are artistic and creative-wonderfully displayed. My grandma and aunt have put so much work and time in this book and it has really paid off. I am proud of them and think it's great that people can put themselves in someone's shoes that has AD. This book is interesting and will keep your attention until it's over. I reccomend this book to anyone.

This book gave me some small insight into what my grandmother, who has alzheimers, must be going through. From the description of why he's afraid of the dark to the small joys of daily life and unquestioning company of his dog, Smith-Henderson has given a treasure to those of us baffled by this disease. My aunt is now using the book for a project in medical school, and I am encouraging my family to read it, so they might also have an idea of what people with alzheimer's face daily.

I have worked in nursing homes with Alzheimer's patients and received excellent staff training in relating to these people. But nothing equals the insights into the feelings so powerfully shared by Mr. Henderson. I'm giving it to a friend whose spouse has just been diagnosed and will recommend it to professionals still in the caregiving field.

Our family has really enjoyed this book. We homeschool our two children, ages 10 and 13, and have been reading this book to them chapter by chapter. The narrative appealed to our precocious but math-phobic ten-year-old, so that she wasn't even aware she was doing math. The topics and exercises appealed to our math nerd thirteen-year-old, who has taken on the task of disproving the four-color map proof. The exercises in the book are well-explained, and require only simple materials such as paper, pencil and dice. I provided the children with just a bit of background information. For example, we hadn't done much work in probability, and needed a little background before we played with weird dice. However, most topics (fractals, chaos theory, topology, etc.,)were so well explained, no further information was necessary. I recommend this book for all those who wish to interest their children in mathematics beyond the humdrum rote of math facts.

Prospective readers/orderers should know that this is a workbook for beginning college students, with information about such things as how to decide what to wear, how to pay your tuition fees on time, how to budget your time, etc. It is VERY basic (even for college students), and contains VERY little valid information about the brain. Not much there for the high price.

I read "Math Trek 2" aloud, as bedtime reading, to my nine-year-old, who enjoyed it very much, and even proved how closely he'd been paying attention by surprising his teacher with a novel, different answer to a series question she'd posed the class, and then explaining his answer so the whole class could understand it.
As an adult, I very much enjoyed such tidbits as *why* the five Platonic solids are called that, and what they meant to Plato. Reading these books is as much fun for me as it is for my child.
The book is marked "Young Adult", but should be entertaining and informative to a wide range of ages. My nine-year-old would not have read it on his own if I had just left it around, though; younger kids probably need an adult's involvement.
