The World of the Yeshiva: An Intimate Portrait of Orthodox Jewry
Published in Paperback by KTAV Publishing House (2000)
Author: William B. Helmreich
Amazon base price: $31.19
Average review score:

Informative, insightful, highly recommended reading.
In the advanced yeshiva, adult males spend long periods of time (for some their entire adult life) studying and interpreting traditional writings on Jewish law and theology, all but totally cut off from the mainstream of American life, and the kind of lives lived by most American Jews. The World Of The Yeshiva: An Intimate Portrait Of Orthodox Jewry describes the daily life and curriculum, as well as the social, cultural, and ethical goals of this unique Jewish institution and its critically important role in the current revival of Jewish Orthodoxy in America. One time yeshiva student William Helmreich explains why this eastern European version of an ancient Jewish tradition is flourished in late 20th- century America and what its successful transplantation from the old world to the new world tells us about the nature of Orthodox Jewish life. The World Of The Yeshiva is a highly recommended, informative, and insightful addition to the growing body of literature on Orthodox Judaism.

Accurate, objective, and very well-written.
As a member of the "World of the Yeshiva" (perhaps an atypical one!), I found Helmreich's book to be a masterful analysis and would recommend it to anyone who seeks to learn more about this very much misunderstood societal niche.

Saving Children: Diary of a Buchenwald Survivor and Rescuer
Published in Hardcover by Transaction Pub (1996)
Authors: Jack Werber and William B. Helmreich

A remarkable personal account worth your time and money
A truely remarkable personal account of life in Buchenwald both before and during WW2. Although a little dry at first, I soon grew to appreciate the direct, frank writing style of the author as it helps the reader understand that the most horrific events and conditions were simply a matter of day to day life in a NAZI concentration camp. Well worth your time and money.

The Things They Say Behind Your Back: Stereotypes and the Myths Behind Them

excellent book on origins and accuracy of ethnic stereotypes
helmreich's thesis---that 'contrary to what many people think, a large number of stereotypes possess more than a kernel of truth is potentially explosive, but the CUNY sociology professor handles the subject with delicacy and finesse. Helmreich discusses nine American ethnic groups---Jews, Blacks, Hispanic, Italians, Chinese, Japanese, Poles, Irish, and WASPs---and commonly held stereotypes about them. He tries to find that kernel of truth, if there is one, using historical, sociological, psychological, and even physiological evidence. The result is enlightening, provocative, but sensitive as well. Helmreich has cast his net widely, drawn on vast amounts of literature, and condenses his findings into a readable format spiced with anecdotes, jokes, and other lively materials. This is a popular and fascinating book.

inredible book
this book is intriging. it makes you wonder about the other side of the media. letters from tel mond prison is a book written by a man who lives his life with such pupose, meaning and honesty you wonder some times who you feel bad for - the "terrorist" or the "victim"

Inspiring Faith
Era Rapaport effectively communicates the highs and lowes of being a settler in the land of Israel today. He is a modern day Zionist who gave up a life of comfort to face ridicule, persecution and imprisonment to stay true to his faith in the resettlement of Eretz Israel. I highly recommend this book to all who love Zion and believe in the restoration of Israel.

A Tale of The Human Spirit
This book takes what has become a controvertial impersonal topic and turns it into a tale of the human spirit. Era was an the average American. He had the normal life, but he choose to follow the path G-d choose for him. His acts of desperation would be called terrorism by the media, but it is only after reading this book that one understands he was an everday guy defending his family. I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in gaining a true first hand perspective of life in the West Bank.

a review on The Uprooted
The Uprooted is story a that features other stories of 190 escapees. This was also written by an escapee herself. The stories are about the escapee's lives and how they lived during the Holocaust, in their own words. I think the book was very interesting to hear what it was like for different people and their experiences. It was surprising to see how much kinder (children) that were taken away from their to parents to hide from the Nazis and escaped. Overall this book was very good at getting a good understanding of what the Holocaust was like.

INSPIRING, AGAINST-ALL-ODDS TALES OF TENACITY
This book is for you if you have ever wondered why more Jews didn't simply leave Austria and Germany before Hitler seized power of shortly afterwards.

A TOUR DE FORCE!
With a survivor's first-hand knowledge and a psychologist's insights, Whiteman describes the incredible experiences of escapees of Hitler's tyranny.

The Enduring Community: The Jews of Newark and Metrowest
Published in Paperback by Transaction Pub (1998)
Author: William B. Helmreich

Very thorough and entertaining description of old Newark
For those of us who grew up in NJ's Jewish community, particularly in Newark, this book reawakens some wonderful memories. It captures the feeling of a place now vanished, though it "endures" in the minds of those who lived there.

Helmreich has a gift for searching out names of people and places that defined this unique community, with many anecdotes and quotes. I enjoyed every page of it.
