Colorful, clear and concise
The Kids Guide to Research is a researcher's dream! Whether you are eight or eighty, this colorful, clear and consise reference book is an indispensible research tool. Kids Guide is packed with ideas and knowledge, yet breezy and fun to read and the perfect addition to any student's library.

Help Your Child Learn!
Every child should have this. Every kid I know is a researcher at heart -- they have so many interesting questions and such a thirst for knowledge. This book gives them the power to find the answers themselves, rather than asking mom and dad and getting a half-baked hypothesis. Instead of allowing a child's brilliant thoughts disappear in frustration, give them Deborah Heiligman's book and the key to knowledge.

Every family should own a copy!
As homework increases in amount and complexity, both kids and their parents need help. Look no further. This is the perfect guide to research. It has everything your kid needs, including use of the Internet. This is destined to become a standard like the dictionary and thesaurus. My high school student uses her little sister's copy!

The Best Book about Bees for Children
I am a beekeeper and I have been looking for a book about bees for children for years. This one is not only beautiful (what gorgeous, fun art!), it is also scientifically accurate, easy to understand--and really fun to read. There is humor in this book, too. The author and illustrator really knew what they were doing. Publisher, too. Those honeycombed endpapers are ingenius. Plus I see that they used a reknown beekeeper and author as their expert, and that was brilliant. Kudos to National Geographic and the author/illustrator team.

Honeybees by Deborah Heiligman, illustrated by Carla Bolembe
Ever wondered how bees make honey? Dive into this lively informative book about bees and find out why " Busy as a bee" is not an idle statement! Discover which bees work, feed, fly and warn the hive of possible attacks. The book is well written, vividly illustrated and artistically designed. Notice the end papers!Deborah Heiligman takes a complicated concept and explains it in carefully chosen clarifying details. Add this to your home library. You'll return to it, again and again.

The colorful and exciting life of honeybees
As the father of an eight year old who is not particularly interested in science, I am always looking for science themed books that will capture my son's attention. Honeybees is just such a book. My son (and my daughter and I) found the story of the honeybee's life to be intriguing. Their society is truly fascinating. Heiligman's text is well written and informative. Carla Golembe's colorful illustrations are exquisite, imaginative and accurate at the same time. A most impressive accomplishment.

A perfect new baby gift for the older sister or brother
I was at a shower where this book was given as a gift to the mother-to-be and I think it is perfect for new parents as well as the audience I assume it is aimed at: older siblings of new babies. The reason I recommend it for adults as well as children is that it is not only fun and beautifully illustrated, it is also filled with scientific facts that I didn't know before--and I'm a grandma! Did you know that a baby's eyes focus best at 12 inches away--the distance the baby is from you when you hold her in your arms?! Also that babies don't see color in the beginning and that babies have more bones than we do. It's a great book, and kids will love the "experiment" at the end--it involves sticking out your tongue. This book deserves a huge audience. It's my new perfect new baby gift!!

Barbara McClintock: Alone in Her Field (Science Superstars)

Barbara McClintock Alone in Her Field
This is a terrific book! I read it with my 9 year old daughter and 7 year old son. The story describes the personal integrity and strength of Dr. McClintock, both as a child and as a adult. It describes the difficulty of a girl in the 1920's who doesn't aspire to be a docile, married, domestic woman. As an adult, she is intellectually brilliant but has difficulty getting recognition for her discoveries. Thirty years after her most significant discovery, she receives a Nobel Prize for it. The books reads well, lets the reader feel the emotion of McClintock's difficulties AND gives an indepth enough explanation of her genetic research so my 9 year old could understand it and want to know more about it. It was not condescending - didn't oversimplify the concepts.

THE BEST BOOK ON EARTHQUAKES FOR SECOND AND THIRD GRADERS
I'm a second grade teacher and every boy, and a lot of girls I know, devour books about disasters--earthquakes, volcanoes, etc. This one is the best I've seen on earthquakes. It's written simply and clearly and the photographs are "awesome" as they say. I especially like the "you are there" feeling in the beginning and throughout. I highly recommend this book They price is great, too. I bought a dozen for my classroom.

A Heart-warming Family Story
This is a beautiful story of how a mother and son spend a special day together doing simple things, like swinging on a tire swing and finding treasures. The pictures are simple but have a lot of interesting things (tree frogs, deer, pinecones) for our 18 month old to point out. The words are really poetry. This is one book we don't mind at all reading over and over (and yes, our son does ask for it). It would also be appropriate for an older child. Sorry to hear this book is out of print.

From Caterpillar to Butterfly

lovely story, but...
The only complaint I have about this book is that the caterpillar disappears into a chrysalis -- not a cocooon. The last Painted Lady butterflies we had (a watch-your-caterpillar-change-into-a-butterfly kit) all spun cocoons - no chrysalis!

THE Book to accompany Butterfly Houses, Pavillions
We got this book in addition to a home "Butterfly Pavillion" by InsectLore. It prepared my son and us for what to expect as the Painted Lady Butterflies were developing through each stage. So even during the lulls in the action, we could spark some anticipation. Which heightened the whole process for my 5 year old.
We also found out this book is used at his kindergarten for their butterfly learning.
This is the first Let's-Read-And-Find-Out book we've bought and were impressed enough to want to get the other books in the series.

A peek inside a mystery
This book is the perfect accompaniment to spring! Even if you can't bring a caterpillar into your classroom, you can still share the magic and mystery of their turning into butterflies with this wonderful book. The tone is so kid-friendly, kids will be learning without even realizing it. A great resource!

Bite-sized history
It's a neat bit of history, told well for kids in a bite-size package. It takes one of those obscure facts that we all have rattling around in our heads from High school ("Yeah. Gulf stream.... warm water...") and fleshes it out into a nifty little story with excellent illustrations.

My second grader could read it (though I think she missed some of the historical context).

Good Story, Good Science
This is an important subject that is only mysterious because people think it's boring or too hard to understand. Deborah Heiligman changes that with a very interesting story that will have your second-grader knowing more than even a lot of scientists.
