Excellent book dealing with arrival of new sibling
The Katie Morag series of books paints a lovely picture of rural life on a remote Scottish island. In this story Katie Morag is feeling jealous of all the attention her new sibling is getting, and how she comes to terms with it. The illustrations are beautiful.

The best children's book in our family's collection
Mairi Hedderwick is a genius. Katie entertains us in story after story (we have a complete collection in our family) and we feel like we know everyone in the village, too.

A pure Scottish children's series
I love the Katie Morag series of children's books. Little ginger haired Katie Morag is split between the traditional ways of Granny Island and the modern Granny Mainland. Granny Island works with her hands and isn't afraid to get dirty. Granny Mainland wears nice clothes and bothers about her appearance. Katie Morag loves them both, but they don't appreciate each other.

How to solve this? Why, with sheep of course. How perfectly Scottish.

A warm-fuzzy intergenerational story
Hedderwick is a master story teller with wonderful illustrations which delight children & adults. Katie Morag's home is so comfortably chaotic and the parents and grandmothers are characters. In this tale, there is an increased understanding between the "fancy-ways" Grannie mainland and her strong, competent counterpoint, Grannie Island. And the Scottish is wonderful!

Beautifully illustrated and well written travel book
Sea Change is an enthralling journey with the author as she overcomes fears to sail from East to West Scotland. Mairie writes with sensitivity, evoking memories for anyone who has ever sailed. Her beautiful watercolours and drawings are the icing on the cake.

A terrific true-life maritime adventure!
Possessed with a desire for romantic adventure, yet afraid of the sea, Mairi Hedderwick undertook a six week voyage with "the Captain" down the Caledonian Canal and out to sea in a small, antiquated sailing boat. Armed only with her pens, paints, papers, and pots of herbs, children's book author/illustrator Hedderwick recorded her voyage. She found that the romantic moments were scarce and the voyage fraught with danger and difficulty. But by finding humor in even the most adverse circumstances while conveying the beauty of the land and sea through her words and pictures, she is able to convey to the reader her unforgettable voyage of discovery. Sea Change is a superbly presented travelogue that will thrill even the most sedentary armchair traveler and may well inspire the reader to throw caution to the wind and embark upon a voyage of discovery of their own.

a delightful and enchantingly illustrated story for 3-7 yrs.
The drawings are beautiful and humourous and the story is richly crafted.Katie Morag is a young girl who lives on the island of Struay, off the west coast of Scotland (a fictitious island, I think!) and this story tells of the impact on the islanders when a new pier is proposed...there is excitement (Katie Morag, and those islanders whose business will benefit) and there is doubt(Katie Morag's grannnie, who fears that the "old ways" will be forgotten) but in the end there is positive for all concerned. My daughter adores, as do I, all the Katie Morag books, partly beacause of the strong Scottish flavour which we keenly relate to,but also because the stories are funny and touching, with a good dose of reality woven in,and the illustrations are enchanting.

An Eye on the Hebrides: An Illustrated Journey
Published in Paperback by Trafalgar Square (1992)
Author: Mairi Hedderwick
Amazon base price: $19.95

Magical sketches...

In this book, the author sketches her 200 days of traveling all of the Hebrides. Her extensive vocabulary enhances the tales of her journey, but the focus of the book is on the sketches rather than the actual travel adventures. For example, only one page of text describes her ten stormy days on Harris. The reader is traveling with an artist, so we read less about tourist destinations and more about the weather, the scenery, and the treck to get to the next hilltop - in order to sketch, of course. Whatever detail the descriptions of the journey are lacking are more than recovered in the sketches. Most are in black and white, with the occasional breathtaking color scene. This is a beautiful book, but it shouldn't be mistaken for a planning guide, or even a travel log. Instead it is a restful read, a pleasant escape into island scenery.

Can't wait to go there !
After having a wonderful visit to the Shetland Islands, a friend sent us this book so that we could start preparing for our next journey to that area -- the Outer Hebrides. Now, after reading this book and looking at the wonderful sketches, we want to visit all of the islands. It is so well presented that I seem to hear the people speaking as I read the words. The sketches make one feel all cozy and close to nature.

It must be a rugged area of the world but we know that we want to be part of what ever these people have to offer and what ever the land wishes to show us.

It's a great book to read even if you don't plan a trip -- watch out for you may eventually find yourself on an interesting journey.

Highland Journey
Mairi follows the path of a 19th century artist who traveled through the highlands, sketching as he went. The book provides a very interesting comparison of the two century's perpectives on the highlands as well as enjoyable watercolor paintings of the highlands

Olu's book review
Katie Morag and the Big Boy Cousins is a good book. It shows that you do not have to be bad to be cool. She was being bad to impress her big cousins. I also like the illustrations.

Katie Morag and the Grand Concert
This is a delightful story about a little girl who overcomes her stage shyness by helping a relative overcome a more debilitating problem. A happy resolve is reached and a good time is had by all. A good book that shows the importance of putting others before the self. A good read-aloud, albeit busy in illustration. Little ones will enjoy it.
