Elvin Hayes the "Big E"
This book is a must for any teenager in school having problems with peer pressure. There are areas of subject they can related to giving alternative views on managing pressure.
I would give this book a 5-star rating for several reasons, but the main reason is Elvin Hayes' testimony to sports. The book portrays the way he feels about the world. He tells about his hate of the world for being so competitive; yet he channels his anger towards higher goals playing professional sports. He really sounds like he is having a lot of bad days while the book is being written. Therefore the story told is like he hates the world in a good sense.
One of his popular quotes that I love is; "I'll do everything in my power to destroy my opponent." Competetively speaking; How many times playing chess games have I heard that? It made me chuckle. Elvin Hayes has done a great job bringing the sport "down to earth". Making sports in professional basketball realistic and personal. The book comes to an end in the 1977 season which leaves you with a lot of questions. I wonder; Is Elvin Hayes still alive? Where is he living now? What else has the man acheived since that year.
If Elvin Hayes wrote another book is it as honest and sincere as "They Call Me The Big E"?
