A breath of fresh air for a change
To those who think that Robert Bly had something going, but somehow got it all wrong; to those who have trouble getting in touch with their, "feminine side" but are not about to degenerate into redneck imbecility; and to those who just like a good story that will evoke many memories, this book is a pleasant surprise. Told from the point of view of a philosophy teacher at an all boys' prep school, it makes telling points, which are both politically incorrect and thoughtful.

A powerful saga of courage and adapting to the unexpected
The Headmaster's Papers by Richard A. Hawley is the literate and engaging story of John Greeve, headmaster for a small, independent New England boys' school, whose personal and professional life begins to disintegrate around him. Faced with the crumbling of his meticulously ordered routine, Greeve must accept the challenge and fight for his school, his family, and even his own life. Originally published almost twenty years ago, Richard Hawley's The Headmaster's Papers continues to be very highly recommended as a powerful saga of courage and adapting to the unexpected.

A remarkable ability to craft a lyrical and timeless verse
The Headmaster's Poems is a compendium of work showcasing Richard Hawley as a gifted and experienced wordsmith with a remarkable ability to craft a lyrical and timeless verse. At The Crosswalk: As if they would not break us,/Leave us hunched or splayed at the curb,/These cars hiss past us where we wait./Their muffled heft and edges whisk/Within inches of our shins, knees, groins.//Posing, I deny their power,/Gaze above it grandly for a sign,/As up into my palm I feel my daughter's asking hand,/Gently acknowledging, hardly blaming/Each deadly pass.

AN ALL-ENCOMPASSING REFERENCE TOOL
Also available in CD-ROM, this all-in-one resource is an authoritative reference which many scientists and learners can count on. Since its first appearance some eighty years ago, this dictionary has established itself as the ultimate tool of choice for researchers.
Its extensive coverage of chemicals and pharmaceuticals is hard to rival. Users of this dictionary appreciate its concise definition of both terms and phenomena. Anybody who seeks a solid all-encompassing chemical lexicon will get the ultimate satisfaction here. Its 1300 pages are filled with the most up-to-date definitions.
The only sour point, though, is that its price is on the high side. Still, it is not a bad investment.

Excellant book for practical chemists, researches, students.
This book provides condensed and prompt information not only on chemistry related subjects, but biology, biochemistry, and many more. It has very good cross referances. I think anybody who decided to buy Hawley's Condensed Chemical Dictionary would not regret it.

Help for the Boards
Microbiology and Immunology is another quality review guide molded in the line of the other Board Review Series books. While all the required information for the boards is presented, little is in sufficient detail for course exams. However, this book is a good reference and guide to help steer your studying in conjunction with a larger text.

Best Book Around
If you are used to the Pathology and Physiology BRS style, this is a very good book. Although Micro Made Simple is rated really high and so is the Lange book, this book did it for me, while those did not. It is detailed and simple at the same time; the outline format is easier to read than the full text format. I recommend this book to whoever is taking a Micro class or for the boards. The best part about it is that it covers immunology too!

Great idea, fun play, but....
It's important to know it's for a cast of 24 characters. I bought it hoping it would work for a total of 6 kids, but there's no way to cut it down that far.

If you have a larger number of children as cast members, I think it would be a fun production.

Easy to Use !
"Not-So-Silent Night" is an EASY, cost effective, children's Christmas Pageant to produce. It's "easy-to-use" format allows children to part-take based on their areas of interest and abilities. Parental involvement is minimal and gives children inspiration and freedom to produce their own costumes and props.

If it wasn't for the ease that "Not-So-Silent Night" presented, down to promotional flyer ideas and caroling sheet also included, I doubt we would have been able to complete our first pageant in the time constraints we faced to the success and platitudes we received. I personally recommend this pageant for any group looking at preparing a children's production.

I Laughed Out Loud
I loved the premise of this play: Shepherds who visit baby Jesus on the night of his birth are so excited about the events of the evening that they make a great deal of noise and are arrested for disturbing the peace. The play takes place in the court room where the shepherds are on trial. I laughed out loud at the witnesses for the prosecution, especially Dr. Sigmund Fruitcake! The children performing the play loved it, too.

Deservedly out-of-print
I kept reading rave reviews about this book (on other sites) and finally decided to buy it--ugh! I can't believe I searched and searched for a copy and was thrilled when I found one. I'm of an age to remember all of the Yucky women's magazines of the 60's--this novel reads like some of the short stories I remember all too well in those. It's written in sentimentally lurid, gushing, florid prose. I think the scenario is quite clever, but couldn't get past the style to appreciate it fully.

We Speak No Treason
Wonderful book. I read every book by Rosmary Hawley Jarman I could find. I think this would make a great Masterpiece Theatre film with John Lynch at Richard.

one of the all-time great reads of my life
This book reads like the gorgeous, fevered dream of someone who really lived in Richard's time. Although I knew Richard's story already, I was cared so much for the characters that I was literally shaking as I approached the end of this book. I can't recommend it highly enough.

Moral Courage Begins at Home
As an educator and chaplain, which is to say, as one deeply concerned with the moral formation of children in a relativistic, even predatory environment, I had high hopes for this book. Unfortunately, they went begging. First of all, the essays were poorly organized, with few dates attached, so that issues from the '70's, '80's and '90's were all jumbled together -- this from a man who insists that history can be "objectively" known. Second, in the name of moral renewal, the book is really an apologia for American, masculine, rational culture, implying that it possesses an absolute quality. Hawley's warning that marijuana turns boys into girls was quite the limit! I am no fan of drugs, but I am also no fan of scare tactics especially when they have overtones of bigotry. I suppose the book gave itself away in its first essay when Hawley is reflecting on the Aristotelian virtue of courage in the Nichomachean Ethics. All Hawley's examples involve the courage to change the behavior of others. To change the behavior of others without first having the courage to change ones own behavior is just another word for moral imperialism. I've read some good conservative stuff, but this book isn't it.

Hawley's Essay's-One of a Kind
Dr. Richard Hawley has done a splendid job at giving the reading of any of his compositions a firm idea of what he is trying to communicate to them, and keeping them interested as they read the piece. He does this in all of his works, from the Western Civilization pamphlets he wrote in the late 1970's, to the periodic letters he addresses to the University School Community. Papers from the Headmaster once again fits into the mold of Hawley's better piece's, perhaps his best published work so far. His tales of boys who he has come into contact to during his three decade teaching career are amazing, particularly of the tales of Dave Chollet. Although most of these stories Dr. Hawley shares are recylcled from his speaches he gives during morning assembly at University School, they are still elequently crafted and Pulitzer Prize worthy.
