"Mark Twain Remembers" is one of the best books I have read in quite a while. It is entertaining, sensitive, creative and beautifully written. It is remarkable how Mr. Hauser, who is well known for his sports writing, could write a book of such delicate poetry. I loved it and I would recommend it to anyone. Bravo, Mr Hauser.

Mark Twain Remembers arrived in the mail and I hungrily devoured it, savoring every morsel of its clever prose and intriguing personalities. But I am not sated, just sad that the book is finished, and will seek out other books authored by Thomas Hauser. Deliberately trying to prolong my pleasure and immersion into the life of Samuel Clemens, not wanting it to end, I attempted to put off reading its end, but was compelled to. His outlook on life and love drew me into his world, enabling me to view it differently than ever before. I am richer for having had this experience. Not ordinarily a fan of boxing books, the sense of humanity portrayed in the fight sequence sparked my imagination. The courage displayed by Bones as he fought against slavery was memorable. I read with bated breath awaiting the climax (which I won't reveal lest I ruin it for you!). This extraordinary, compelling book is full of gems as it exposes the cruel as well as compassionate side of human nature. It is so human a story. I was mesmerized.

"Mark Twain Remembers" is an absolute joy to read. A rich, full and quite-imaginative romp through one of the most interesting periods in US history, as ostensibly-seen through the eyes of Samuel Clemens. His use of Don King as a model for the Hiram Kane character is--at turns-- brilliant, and wildly-satiric. Just a fantastic read for both fans of boxing and Americana.

This is a book that I delight in reading over and over to my 6-year old. The rhymes and glorious illustrations keep my daughter engrossed while enjoying the story and learning life's lessons in a kind and subtle tone.

Your child will be riveted by the tales involving the most lovable bear in children's literature (and you will too!). This memorable character will remain in your hearts and minds for a lifetime. I am purchasing a copy for my friend's five-year-old so that they can experience the pearls of wisdom imparted by Martin Bear with inimitable humor and good nature. The book is modern yet provides moral depth and values. The paintings are sumptuous! Read it and be transported into the realm of Martin Bear and his fears, joys, and tremendous courage. The Penguin, Magic Raccoon, and Nasty Monster are terrific characters too! My children adore this book and I never tire of reading it with them.

This book is a wonderful pictorial of Ali's life and times, triumphs and defeats, both personal and professional. A must for any fan of Ali or the triumph of spirit over surroundings.

From the pictures to the text, Hauser shows Ali in all his greatness. The pictures are captivating and the text allows the reader to experience what Ali has to offer. "In Perspective" allows everyone from the common sports fan all the way to the boxing expert the chance to step into the life of Muhammed Ali.

I was pleasantly surprised by this book. It is really quite good, with a very good story line. There's a bit much about Anne's (the main characters) personal life, but the book certainly does keep you reading. And an unexpected ending. But one thing is really silly: on the cover of the book, there's an image of the World Trade Center. Yet in the book, it's stated over and over that the action occurs in Trump Tower! I know, you shouldn't judge a book by its cover, but the people that did the cover ought to have chosen a cover that made more sense!

I was part of the first group of people who saw this book before it's release. Muhammad Ali came to my high school to promote cultural, and racial unity. This book helped young teenagers such as myself that the world should not be filled with hate. Healing helped my school heal, with it's powerful knowledge.

For those who want to know about the real Ali, I recommend "The Tao Of Muhammad Ali" by Davis Miller, which offers far more about the person rather than dates and figures. I enjoyed "Muhammad Ali: His Life And Times", it had a lot of things in it I didn't know, but if you want to read just one great book about Ali, then make it "The Tao Of Muhammad Ali".

Aside from being one helluva boxer, Muhammad Ali was a vibrant, intuitive, funny, giving, and confilcted man. But his universal fame and his powerful fists (in addition to his constantly flapping mouth) often obscured his innate humanity, a quality that is made strikingly evident in Thomas Hauser's "Muhammad Ali: His Life And Times". Hauser's interview-driven paean to possibly the greatest sportsman of the Twentieth Century celebrates Ali's impact both in and out of the boxing ring, while at the same time revealing the heretofore unknown depths of The Champ's complex personality. Even if you know Ali's history backwards and forwards, there's still much to learn from this breathtakingly honest volume. For example, I had no idea that early in his career, soon after he declared himself a member of the intensely pro-black Nation Of Islam, Ali would make his way into poor white neighborhoods to play with the children of the men that his religious sect referred to as "white devils". I was also surprised to learn that the Ali of today--though not the least bit regretful of his decision to align himself with Elijah Muhammad in the early 1960's--no longer holds the Nation Of Islam's founder in particularly high regard. The fact that the champ himself cooperated in the construction of this book (i.e., the unflinching honesty during his own interviews, in addition to the insistance that all of his co-hortrs who were quoted be totally truthful themselves) makes "His Life And Times" that much more vital. An essential portrait a true American original.

If you are a Muhammad Ali fan then you definitely need to have this book.It gives details of his life and career. These details are not only told by him but by other people who he had an influence on. You get a chance to hear from his opponents and also his entourage. This is a good buy.

Thomas Houser is an accomplished novelist. Finding the Princess is an excellent novel, serious and light-hearted at the same time; entertaining, surprising, and full of twists and turns. The author's journalistic background shows in his knowledge of the details of New York life, its politics, and its tenuous race relations. The most appealing aspect of the novel is its writing style: witty, simple, colorful and at times poetic. The variation of the narrative between the present and flashbacks from the past enriches the plot, although sometimes the narrative is bogged down with detail. The novel is rich with action, events and incidents that reflect the turbulence in New York life, adding a strong element of suspense and anticipation. But some events, and characters, seem to have been forced into the novel, such as the character of Edward Burgess, Geoffrey Harper's psychiatrist. Despite the unpleasant early years of Harper's life, the exposition of his character in the novel does not go well with someone in need of psychiatric care. Harper is not presented as a man who really suffered much while growing up. That came as a bit of a surprise to me. Another is Kate Reilly, as lovable and moving as she is, I could not help but make the comparison with Love Story's heroine. The author's nostalgia for the sixties and seventies surfaces in the character of Kate Reilly. In terms of subject matter, the novel deals with various issues at the same time: love, race relations in New York, family, childhood, and sex abuse. Despite an obvious effort at impartiality, the novel in fact leans hard on blacks in NY. Blacks come across in the novel as violent, bigoted, exploitative, and unsatisfiable. Other minorities show similar attitudes, but not in the absolute. In the case of blacks, the novel ends with even the good fatherly Walter Bailey joining the ranks of Thaddeus DuPree. The latter is one of the most impressive creations of Houser. DuPree is a tremendously enjoyable character to follow in the novel. All in all, the novel is a pleasure to read.

Jeffrey Harper is a street-savvy columnist for a New York City Newspaper in Finding The Princess, a story of racial confrontation between the police and the black community. An erudite writer, Thomas Hauser presents a deeply engaging novel with commentary on love and other enduring human values threaded deftly through a collage of characters and events set in the New York City urban landscape. Rich in texture, strong character portraits, exciting plot twists, Finding The Princess is one of the finest and best written contemporary novels to be published this year.

Thomas Hauser cogently examines race relations in his new novel. This sometimes comedic and suspenseful book about a journalist captures life, love and politics in New York. The reader suspects that there exists a real-life evil sister and other odd characters populating Mr. Hauser's world.

This is a nice quick read that gives a behind-the-scenes view of what it takes to put together a world championship fight. The book follows the career of former Superlightweight champion Billy Costello and the individuals that comprise help him reach the top. Interspersed throughout the book are anectdotes regarding the promoters, trainers, televison execs, and boxers who all want a piece of Costello.

The book really takes off when Costello's camp tries to set up a title defense for the champ. From the stuggles to find an opponent who won't pose much of a risk to Costello's crown, to the virtual soul-selling that occurs to get the fight broadcast, to the fight itself, you feel the turmoil that Costello, his trainer and manager all go through. The description of the actual fight is written so vividly you feel like you're the one in the ring.

This true story makes you sorry you never followed Costello's career as it was happenng in the early 1980's. And as an added bonus, the author gives you one more reason (as if you needed another) to despise Don King.

This is a great book by a writer I truly admire. Thomas Hauser wrote an incredible biography of The Greatest, Muhammad Ali, and in this book he really gives the reader an inside look at boxing.

Focusing in the career of former champ Billy Costello, the author provides an interesting view about promoters (Don King included, of course), managers and the terrible agony of the fighter and his fears, in and out of the ring.

Really recommended!

This book is beautiful, with many dramatic pictures about the life and career of Muhammad Ali. This is a collector's piece, and if you really love Ali I recommend it.
