What a ride!
This book is a wonderful excursion into the sometimes wacky history of New York City! I lived here all my life and their were many things I did not know about which I learned while reading this fantastic book. It's a roller coaster ride of the most unususl, yet true stories that must be told! It.s a great book for anyone, but if you live in NY, You NEED this book...

Frank Borzellieri's Talent is Incredible
I've been reading Frank Borzellieri's work for several years and his writing is outstanding. His other book "The Unspoken Truth" was a political treatise. I'm so happy he wrote a quasi-history book like this. The stories in "It Happened in New York" are fascinating. The Blackout of 1977 was chilling and frightening. The Cardiff Giant Hoax was humorous. Willie Sutton robbing a bank; Niagara Falls drying up. Fantastic! Plus, I never knew that there were witch trials in New York. I thought they were all in Salem, MA. This book is terrificly entertaining and at the same time informative. These events are treasures, as is this book. Great job again, Frank!

Review of "It Happened in New York"
For those of you looking for a good story, you won't find it here. You will find MANY stories. All of them very good. For lovers of history this is a must book. It is very factual and unlike most factual books, it is enjoyable reading also. Ms. Capo has a way of telling history and making it fun. And it told me many things that happened in history that I didn't know about. Where can you go wrong? This is a keeper book for anyone who enjoys reading. And for anyone who enjoys history. This is not a book you will want to trade in at a used book store. This is one you will want to keep on your bookshelf forever. Do yourself a favor and go out and buy it today. I did.

calcucus is DA bomb!!
when i was back in the vietnam war, my commander made us all take calcucus. he said a whole bunch of loogie about how it would make us better soldiers. well, little did i know that he was right. one day, when i was out in the heat of the battle, i came upon an unaware guerilla who did not know calucucus, i immediately figured out the derivation of my rifle and with a few simple calcultions, i was able to blow my opponent out of the water from several feet with my high powered rifle. take calcuclus and save your life and your country's life. go calcucluals!!!!

Book wonderful and easy to understand; Saxon does it again!
This book teaches the advanced topics of calculus in a manner that one does no learn one day and forget in a month. The Saxon series learning premise is that of an 'incremental development', which means once a skill is acquired and it is practiced, another fascet is added, and then another until you have a full understanding of the material. This book is great for anyone at all who wants to learn Calculus; not just students. It is recommended that the book "Advanced Mathematics" should preceed this because the first part "Calculus" quickly reviews all the topics in that book. So, I say get the book and try it; it is the best way to learn Calculus!

Nice try, Mr. Baum...
After five "Oz" books, L. Frank Baum had enough, and tried to close off the series with this sixth installment. Of course, the children wouldn't let him, and he went on to write eight more, but this effort to end the series was one of the best in some time.

The last two books ("Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz" and "The Road to Oz") suffered serious problems. They meandered, there was no sense of danger, nothing bad could ever happen to these characters. This time out Baum started with our heroine in a form of danger -- Aunt Em and Uncle Henry were going to lose the farm in Kansas -- and went on to reestablish the greatest threat the Oz books had left, Roquat the Red, the Nome King.

While this book again lacked a serious sense of danger, the devices Baum used in his effort to end the series were all clever, and furthermore, made for better stories when he returned to the series later. This is a lovely story, a real classic.

One of my favorite Oz books
This Oz book is one of the more disjointed ones, more a sort of package tour of Ozma's magic kingdom than a quest. But the vignettes are charming and stick with you. The "Rigamaroles" have become part of this family's culture, with my 12 yo son and I occasionally getting into rigamarole competitions, where we go on and on without saying anything. Bunbury and Bunnybury also stuck with me during the six years between reading this to my first son and my second; utensia is ... punny; and the cuttenclips, the fuddles, and the flutterbudgets are all cute and endearing. A great read aloud for the 5 to 10 set.

Onr thing, though: The famed metallic ink in the Books Of Wonder edition is just sort of glittery. Nice, but not really any big deal. I don't think that this is the best looking BoW Oz book.

A fun tour of Oz
Finally, Aunt Em and Uncle Henry get the chance to visit Oz, and Baum introduces them and us to a variety of unusual inhabitants. True, most of their journey through the countryside has little or nothing to do with the main plot, the attempt (again) by the Nome King to conquer Oz. But it's fun. And best of all, this book becomes a turning point for the series because in it Dorothy makes the decision to remain in Oz. While maybe not the best book in the series, The Emerald City of OZ is a lot of fun and well worth the read.

Also recommended: King Fortis the Brave, Harry Potter and Abarat. Books that, 100 years from now, people will be looking back with the fondness of the Oz series.

For Pekar fans and people struggling with illness
I found this book interesting since I'm a fan of Pekar's American Splendor series and his appearances on David Letterman's shows (apparently at an end, unfortunately for Pekar, even more unfortunately for Letterman). This book's an in depth look at Pekar's struggle with lymphoma. Given the subject matter, it's probably no surprise that this isn't as amusing as the American Splendor anthologies. But for fans, or for people struggling with illness, it's probably a worthwhile read.

A great book
This is an incredible book. This comic-book remarkably and vividly portrays real lives--some lives torn apart by cancer, and some by war.

I loved this book, and I've read it twice, several years apart.

The second time I read it, something "hit me over the head" that hadn't struck me before. That's probably because since my first reading, I've done extensive research on the relationship between cancer and IGF-1 in dairy foods. (I've collected the full-text of hundreds of peer-reviewed journal articles while co-authoring a book on rBGH.) Upon this reading of Our Cancer Year, I noticed that dairy figured prominantly among mentioned foods in the book. Most readers of this review will view this paragraph as more quack than quirk, but I invite serious-minded researchers to check out PubMed for "IGF-1" (found in cow's milk) and "neoplasms," for instance. This book was written before rBGH was introduced into cows, which has resulted in even higher levels of the IGF-1 hormone in our diet.

Another thing that struck me while re-reading this is that people are still killing each other in the Middle East, even this many years later. Not surprising, I guess, but tragic, nevertheless. I admire Joyce B. for her challenging peace work. And I admire Harvey P. for this honest, insightful portrayal of their struggle with cancer.

I think the artist did a fine job, too. An all-around great book, whether you've had cancer or not. (I have not.)

Fine Work
A fine work of autobiography. Understand, however, that Harvey is critical of everything, himself included, and his unflinching eye depicts his personal agony alongside the state-of-the-world at the time. As in many of his extended works, Harvey uses his story to get up on a soap-box, but if you think of his comics as an extension of his life, you might be begining to appreciate what he really is. Harvey IS his stories.

I was struck by the relationship between Harvey and his wife Joyce: if there is a better depiction of the difficulty in love in the midst of illness, I don't know it. Their relationship is loving and it touched me deeply.

The REPRINTED Art of Frank Miller
I saw this in a comic book store and boy, was this a disappointment. Most of the material has appeared in the pages of the Sin City comic books. Here, they're reproduced at a larger size but big deal. Compare this to the recent Art of Hellboy and you'll see a huge difference in terms of value. Do not buy this book if you already own the Sin City comics or graphic novels because you're going to be getting something you've already seen.

Shame on you, Frank. There is hardly any new material here.
I have been a huge fan of Frank Miller since his Wolverine mini-series done in the late 80s. I'm a huge Sin City fan, and I own all of the graphic novels, even though I also own most of the individual issues, so you can imagine my joy when I heard this project was first announced. It arrived today from Amazon, and I'm returning it tomorrow morning. This book is about 90 percent reprints of pages from the various Sin City mini series, and some promotional items, with perhaps a dozen or so rough layouts and sketches. There were exactly 4 images in this book that I hadn't already seen!!! I can't believe he would try to milk [$$]from his fans like this!!! If you own the majority of the graphic novels in this series, don't waste your money on this. There is very little about his thought or design processes. If you haven't read any of the books in this series, this is a good teaser for the full graphic novels.

I bought this hoping that it would wash the bad taste of DK2 away, but now I feel doubly cheated.

This Book Is Truly Amazing
Sin City has always been one of my favirote books out there. I have always wondered how Frank Miller managed to get the book to look so good. So when I heard about this art book, I jumped on it. It completely blew me away! It has several scenes that they break down for you. It also has the different drafts that Frank went through to get single pages done.

Im sure that you think, "well, art books cost a ton!" But, this one only costs around [fairly decent priced]! Plus its worth every penny! Young Artists, Sin City fans, and anyone who likes good art should pick this up!

It wont disapoint you!
