Brave Decisions Goes Beyond the Battlefield
This is a great compendium of moral and ethical choices made at various stages during fifteen different officers' careers. Colonel Maihafer outlines the uncommon courage displayed by some of the most famous and also some unheralded leaders in our military history. From Robert E. Lee and Ulysses S. Grant to Patrick O'Rourke and Alexander Haig the author walks us through very tough decisions that shaped the lives and careers of these great men. He couches the choices they made through the context of their personal thoughts and circumstances. Instead of exposing the reasons why the commanders decided to commit to battle on a particular day or to wage a certain campaign, Maihafer explores questions like why did Lee decide to fight for Virginia and the Confederacy, and not the U.S. constitution he was sworn to defend before the outbreak of war. Why did Maxwell Taylor, as Superintendent of West Point, over-ride the academic board and institute the academy's first formal class on leadership, and why did he ultimately resign as the Army Chief of Staff? Brave Decisions explores these questions and more throughout its pages.

Patton once stated that an officer's career is made up of about three minutes worth of time when he or she actually makes decisions that have great impact. This book helps illuminate a few precious seconds of the careers of fifteen courageous officers. Any leader, whether assuming command or not, will benefit from referring to the chapters of Maihafer's book. Cadets to general officers make various choices throughout their military careers. Brave Decisions illustrates a few of those choices at each level of command. From cadets deciding to resign from the academy to fight for the Confederacy to senior policy makers in Washington DC deciding to relieve a general officer, the choices outlined in the book convey the immensity of the decisions. All leaders, junior and senior, will face choices that have grave impact for themselves, their soldiers, and their country. Vicariously experiencing how other successful officers have considered similar situations allows us to shape our own moral concepts to better handle similar trials we may face in the two or three minutes that make up a career. I highly recommend reading, studying, and keeping this book as a reference for the future. All leaders, whether junior or senior, can glean valuable knowledge and forethought from scrutinizing the pages of Brave Decisions.

Required Reading
By Sen. John F. Kennedy, Profiles in Courage, is, on the surface, merely a fascinating look at some of the courageous senators who helped steer our country to safety in times of turmoil. Taking a more introspective look, one can see the way that the future president sought to live his own life- always striving to do what was best for the nation, regardless of political consequences. "Courage" was a trait that John Kennedy admired the most in men. It is intiguing to read Kennedy describe the character displayed by U.S. Senators during perilous times in the history of our country. This book should be required reading in every high school in America.

Exceptional Account of the Antebellum South
A book which delivers its reader into the South, whether or not they've ever truly been here or not. The marvelous photography, shocking in its realism, tell the tales of generations past, and exhibits the departure of Southern Culture since the beginning days of Northern Occupation. The authors use brilliant words to narrate the imagery, and inspire the reader to embrace what is left of the Antebellum South.

Delightful account of a fading past
The pictures tell the sad story of the decline of the south and Alabama after the War of Northern agression. They also show the imagination and beauty appreciated by the Antebellum culture. A must have for all southern history lovers.

A Pivotal Period of History and a Pivotal Subject
While David McCullough's more recent biography of Harry Truman has received widespread recent attention, Robert J. Donovan's earlier biography published in 1977 has much to recommend it. Whereas McCullough's extensive volume covers Truman's entire life, Donovan zeroes in on the pivotal period of a pivotal presidency. Donovan begins as Truman takes over the awesome responsibility of the presidency after Franklin D. Roosevelt's death. Donovan covers in perceptive detail Truman's decision to drop the atomic bomb on Japan as a means of ending World War Two. Donovan follows the war to its conclusion, and also focuses carefully on the exciting 1948 presidential campaign, when Truman scored one of the greatest upsets in American political history by defeating heavily favored Republican nominee Governor Thomas E. Dewey of New York.

Donovan turns an astute eye as well on Truman's great foreign policy accomplishments of the Marshall Plan, the Truman Doctrine, and the creation of NATO. As a Middle East historian, I was benefitted by his thorough presentation of the controversy leading up to the granting of recognition to the new nation of Israel, and how Truman's decision was crafted.

I would urge that any dedicated Truman scholar should read both the McCullough and Donovan volumes. McCullough covers a wider perspective, while Donovan, on the other hand, gives broader coverage to the pivotal foreign policy events from 1945 to 1948, as well as Truman's sensational upset victory over Dewey.

A well-documented look at the politics of national security
With a keen eye for historical significance, Kevin Hogan surveys the formation of the national security establishment in the Truman and Eisenhower years. A balanced account, this treatment emphasizes the human factor in the arduous negotiations and political conflicts which took place during the late 40's and 50's. A fresh look is taken at Truman, Eisenhower, and the lesser players at the time: Herbert Hoover, Ambassador Joseph P. Kennedy, Hubert Humphrey, and Sen. John F. Kennedy. Those not thoroughly familiar with the events of the period will be moved at the story of the nation's top admirals in brazen defiance of Pres. Truman, or the nervous collapse of Truman's beleaguered war secretary. Requires a moderate attention span, but political buffs should enjoy it a great deal.
