Very informative book. Well organized.

Being a huge fan of dictionaries and encyclopedias; I simply had to examine The Kentucky Encyclopedia by John E. Kleber(Editor), et al. Whilst, I am not a resident of the state of Kentucky ( I live in Atlanta, GA), I have a neverending thirst for knowledge and therefore I thought that it would be pertient for a person of my taste to read and furthermore examine the mentioned item. It starts out with a beatifully detailed map of the state with all the counties; it follows up with a list of all the people whom contributed to this grand project which was printed by the venerable University Press OF Kentucky. The editorial staff section is also a nice touch and shows how much work that is required to produce on of these encyclopedias. The table of contents is also well developed with the following sections: Foreward, Preface, Kentucky: A Historical Overview by Thomas D. Clark, The guide for readers, The kentucky Encyclopedia, Biblographic essay and finally the index. The The first three sections, i.e., the Foreward, the Preface, and the longer article, Kentucky: A Historical Overview by Thomas D. Clark, are all written in a scholarly tone without being stuffy or pretentious. Especially the Clarke article is fascinating in its coverage of the founding of the State of Kentucky. The guide to readers is also helpful for people that are not accustoimed to using encyclopedias. The entries themselves are well written and the font chosen does not detract from the information. For instance if one wants to know whom Charles P. Farnsley was then one should rread p.309 and realize that amongst many things he was the major of Luisville 1948-1953 and that he received his bar in 1930. The index is also a blessing in its ease of use and makes the searching experience very enjoyable. Overall, this is the encyclopedia to get if one is remotely interested in the state of Kentucky and I would definetely recommend it.

If you buy only one book about Kentucky, this is the book to buy. Every aspect of Kentucky history is covered in detail. This is a compilation of articles submitted by over 500 people on various topics ranging from prehistoric Kentucky to modern times. Each one is a facinating description of Kentucky history that reads like a short story. I never tire of reading this book! Is is a must read for anyone who has ever been to or lived in Kentucky.

This book, with its charts of sample mixes and color tones in various media, is a great asset if you are just begining to paint portraits or people. It will give you a good basic understanding of color mixing for skin tones. ( no need to buy premixed colors! Be able to paint the nuance of people, not reduce everyone to the same "skin tones.") In addition, it discussed the effects of shadow and reflected color. Nice illustrations, photos and color charts.

I found this book to be very helpful. Not only did it go in depth about tecniques for creating realistic paintings and portraits, but it also had a complete color guide for creating specific skin tones! I also enjoyed the step by step demonstrations, which again proved useful. I'd recommend this book to artists of all media, whether you work with oils, watercolors, acrylics, gouache, or pastel, this book will be a valuble resource.

This is an excellent book with an extremely insightful and fascinating chapter written by Mark I. Gruhin. He is a very skilled writer and lawyer, and I look forward to his future writings.

Being a lawyer in NYC, I was very impressed with some Inside the Minds: Interne Lawyers. Although it is impossible to cover every Internet related topic, the book does a good job at covering some very interesting topics. In addition, the individuals portrayed in the book represent a good cross sampling of different talents related to Internet law. I particularly enjoyed the interview with Mark Fischer at Palmer & Dodge. If you are a woman, make sure to also check out Inside the Minds: Leading Women.

Mastering the Sky tells the exciting story of aviation in historical perspective. The author is a former Air Force pilot who became a published historian. It begins with the take-off of a Boeing 747, asking how one can lift over 400 tons higher than Mt. Everest in a matter of minutes. It gives answers to such questions, as it flashes back to the mythology of flight and comes forward to the 20th century, including space flight. It explores how Wilson effectively moved over 12,000 men for over 500 miles in the span of about a month. A feat which would have made Guderian proud! It is a must for Civil War enthusiasts and military strategist

This King James Version of the Bible is easy to follow for those who want to find scriptures on specific topics, such as finances, salvation, spiritual warfare, etc. Noted christian leaders such as Kenneth Copeland, Kenneth Hagin and many others have provided the insight that God has given them on topics such as faith, prosperity, the authority of the believer, healing and leading others to Christ in concise write ups placed in the back of this text for easy reference. The Word Study Bible is a must for those who are serious about studying God's Word and building an intimate, personal relationship with Him.

This book is a very useful guide to new trainers even though it is extremely outdated.Many of the techniques explained in it are still used today in the racing world.It thoroughly explains all the basics of care and the right way to break and handle yearlings.The author gives examples of some of the subjects he talks about, which is a big help to visualize what he's saying.Illustrations accompany every chapter to further help in understanding the text.Each chapter is "helped out" by a different driver or trainer for different sides of the sport. I would recommend this book to anybody who has an interest in harness racing.

The series certainly has gone downhill since the glory days. "The Case of the Silk King" is among the best CYOA ever produced.

I don't know if Shannon Gilligan ever wrote another CYOA book, but this one rivals Edward Packard. It loosely takes the real-life story of Jim Thompson, an American silk magnate who disappeared in Thailand, and has the reader pretend to be a young detective asked to track down Thompson years later.

There no real reason tendered for why so many people don't want you to discover the truth, but this minor quibble never distracts from the general quality of the book. It takes the hoary conventions of CYOA books -- especially the use of the exotic locale -- and plays them to the hilt. If I recall correctly (I'm nineteen...it has been years...), you can get killed off by everything from a Bengal tiger to a flash flood if you make the wrong choice.

This is rather unique in the series, in that it takes off on an actual historical happening. CYOA doesn't get any better than this.

The author feels that many substance abusers have an underlying emotional problem like depression, anxiety, bi-polar disorder etc. They really need to be treated for this in order to get the substance abuse under control.

If you are having a substance abuse problem, read this book and be sure you get screened by a real professional for emotional problems. Keep an open mind and save yourself a lot of trouble and heartache. When the emotional issues get resolved, the substance abuse problem may practically take care of itself!

A great "primer" on depression. This is the first book I read on depression after reading Darkness Visible, and I still think it's one of the best, especially as the author's daughter, who suffered from depression, contributed to it.

This was the first work on depression authored with a real life perspective on the illness and its affects on "life" that I had read. Having been trained in the mental health field and being employed in a mental health related job, this was the first work to help me feel better about my own illness. It was so easy to be understanding and supportive of others with this illness, but when it came time for me to understand and to be caring for myself, it all but elluded me.

Also in this work I found the connections between depression, addiction, weight related issues, and hormonal problems. Every little piece of my spotty medical history came into focus under the hands of the author in this book. I have yet to read anything that has helped me on the road to understanding my depressive illness any more than this book. Having a lay person relate information through her own real experiences is a definate plus as well.

Jim Harrison is a contemporary american writer worshipped in Europe but, alas, not so well known in his native country. In FARMER, a novel published in 1975, Jim Harrison writes about nature, origins and the heart of America.

Joey is a farmer, an american of the second generation, and the year is 1956. He lives in the northern part of the Michigan state and is one of the teachers of the local school. His sisters have left the country years ago, heading towards the big cities, and abandoning him with their mother. Joey likes to hunt and to fish. It's a simple story.

During a 6 months period, Joey is going to have a kind of rebellion against his so regular life, a nervous breakdown to use a term of the cities. New experiences, long conversations with his neighbour Doc Evans, the contact with nature will replace the tranquillizers. It's an healthy story.

The themes treated in FARMER are universal : love, death, friendship, regrets. The reader cares about Joey's story and understands his simples questions we have all experienced once in our lives. If only we had the courage to face them so openly like Joey did. in this superb novel.

A book to discover.

I read Harrison's FARMER in one sitting, then made a pot of coffee, and read it again. I recall that I was terribly sad upon finishing, only because the sublime experience had ended. FARMER has no flaws that I can detect. It is simple and has a fierce ecomomy. Tiny book, BIG,BIG story. This is a fine book.

I was but two pages into the book when I read the line "He pokes at the ocean with his cane,staring at it with the raptness he felt for the northern lights as a child." And I wept. I grew up in the Upper Penninsula of Michigan and have stared at the northern lights with that same raptness. No other author captures the uniqueness and wonder of the place and the people like Jim Harrison. He understands the soul of the land and of the people who live there. His imagery and attention to detail are masterful.
