A Great Read
William Henry Harrison, second book in the Young Patriots Series, doesn't disappoint, but makes an excellent read, and both entertains and educates. The illustratins are simply wonderful and truly enhance the story. Geared to the 8 to 12 year old, it's a must on every family bookshelf!

A welcome, highly recommended biography for kids.
William Henry Harrison holds the distinction of being the United States President who delivered the longest inaugural address and served the shortest time (30 days) before he also became the first president to die in office. William Henry Harrison: Young Tippecanoe is a superb biography for young readers ages 8 to 12, written by the late Howard Peckham, and originally published in 1951. Featuring the childhood adventures of our ninth president (including the thrilling rescue of his sister from drowning when he was only seven, and the courageous capture of a British soldier just one year later when he was eight, William Henry Harrison is a welcome, very highly recommended addition to school and community biography collections for children and part of the Patria Press newly designed "Young Patriots" series.

How to Play the Flute

It was good but....
Well were should I begin.... 1st of all I thought this book was ok becasue some of the symbols were a little mis-drawn but on the most part It explained how to hold the flute using the right fingerings. As a beginer I found it helpfull to buy the 2000 Methoid Flute book becasue the cd in the book is very help full, but that book needs this one to fill in were it assumes you already know. The author is very good in explaining though and gives alot of detail. I tought my self so I dont know how it will work for somone that is taking lessons.

Great Beginners Book!
I got this book because of the great reviews and I wasn't disappointed. I can't believe I'm actually playing the flute! I think it's a great beginners book which moves at the right pace and has a good solid introduction. It took me about 3 weeks to reach the end of the book and play 95% of the pieces most of which are popular so you'll know if you're playing wrong or not.. There are pieces like "Greensleeves" (my fave), "Swan Lake", a lot of classical pieces whose melodies I knew already but not their titles.
I'm now trying to look for a second book to continue with.

Probably the Best Book for New Flutists
I bought this book when I decided to teach myself to play the flute. It does a great job of introducing the reader to the basics of how to assemble it, clean it, and get a sound out of it, gradually moving through the basics of flute playing. It even introduces beginners to some of the cool tricks (whistle tones and playing more than one note at once) that advanced flutists know, but can be fun for beginners to play around with as well. Whether you intend to advance to "serious" music, or just play in your living room for fun, this book is a terrific starting place. This book would also be a good reference for a middle-school flutist with a band director who is a trumpet player who hardly knows diddly about woodwinds.

Very disappointing for Harrison
Harrison usually has intelligent characters making reasonable decisions, but this book is premised on a decision that is so ridiculous, that I couldn't get past the first few chapters. The situation: A modern-day bad guy has taken the plans for a simple machine gun back in time to change the outcome of the Civial War. The obvious solution: Take a year to train a Seal Team for the mission (You can send anyone from anywhen to anywhen, so it doesn't matter how much time you take to prepare.) Send them back to a month before the bad guy arrived, so that they are ready and waiting for him when he gets there. Harrison's solution: Send a lone black man with no training and no weapons to pre-Civil War Virginia to arrive several months after the bad guy. That's silly.

A fun book.
This is an interesting concept, and was run to read. I'm glad to see it back in print. I had a hard time finding it.

A Pretty Good Time Travel Novel
I found this book to be a pretty good read. I don't think Harry Harrison is quite the master of alternative history that Harry Turtledove is but he is a good writer. Most of the book deals with the present and is a detective novel. The last third of the book takes place juste before and during the civil war. I thought the first half of the book was very well paced and written and if the entire book had maintained the same tempo it would have deserved 5 stars. I felt the last part of the book, although satisfactory, was a little rushed and trite.

Definitely worth a read.
