Superb Analysis of the Titanic's Sinking
George Behe performs a first-rate analysis of some of the most controversial aspects of the sinking of the Titanic, gathering together pieces of evidence which indicate that important aspects of the sinking were covered up by the White Star Line after the sinking. Make no mistake about it -- this is not some sensationalist diatribe, but a well-researched, carefully documented study. It's a small book, but an important contribution to the subject.

An excellent book
Behe gives us a profound look at one of the greatest trragedies of the 20th century. Its well worth the price and well worth the time to read

One of, if not the best of Titanic books ever!
George Behe has written the best Titanic book. He has done thorough research in his subject and has come up with some very concrete conclusions about that tragic night.

George has taken the results both Inquiries and some additional investigation and come to a very startling conclusion. Was the White Star Line negligent? Was "someone" trying to cover up certain facts pertaining to the navigation of the ship? These and many more questions are answered here in this book.

As the title suggests, Titanic was an accident just waiting to happen. I highly recommend this very important book.

This Book is a Collectable all by itself!
Josef Originals were figurines from my childhood and are a wonderful collectable to pass down through generations. This well illustrated book will delight any Josef collector. It begins with a short written history and jumps into many pages of clear pictures. Each page is a delight to view. This guide has a price listing in the back. Collect all three "Josef" books by the Authors Jim & K Whitaker. These books are indeed collectibles in themselves.

A Story of How to Enjoy Life and Be Miserable -- All at Once
I picked this book up in a used book store for [money] more than when it was purchased new in 1960. The pages literally crumbled as I turned them, but I couldn't put the book down. I was enthralled with the life of Oscar Wilde. Now, this biography isn't one written years after the subject's death from scraps of information. No. This is written by a very close friend of Wilde's, Frank Harris. In being written by someone of such closeness, it lends credence to the harsh words the author had to say of Wilde. Harris calls him lazy and slothenly. Of course, Wilde caused quite a sensation in his time. He was imprisoned under other pretenses, but mainly because he was a homosexual in a time period when this was not acceptable. Oscar was one who did not care what others thought of him. He was determined to live a life of pleasure and to make money doing things that he liked: writing and speaking. However, he did a great deal of leaching off of others. There's no denying Wilde's genius. I have yet to read any of his works except for a short essay entitled "The Soul of Man Under Socialism." To me, the thoughts seemed profound. But Harris says that Oscar never said or wrote anything original; he merely took other people's thoughts, meshed them together, and said them in a more profound way. This is a biography that reads like a fine story. Harris is a great writer and has more first-hand knowledge of his subject than any other biographer that I've read. I'd reccomend this book to others without reservation.

"The best life of Oscar Wilde", said George Bernard Shaw.
"The best life of Oscar Wilde", said George Bernard Shaw after reading this book. I cannot but agree with him utterly. No unnecesary data is wasted, no long reflexions bore us. It's just an Oscar's very close friend telling us with great elegance and delicacy the story of one he has admired and loved so much, but without fear of saying the truth. Amicus Plato, sed magis amica veritas. Of course, the reader has to know Mr Harris is the true "lead actor" in the story he's telling us, always supporting the Truth and the Right. But one can easily forgive him for that in reward for the great moments un Oscar's life he's saved from oblivion and darkness. A wonderful work of art itself, this biography must be read by every admirer of that Prince of Charm Oscar Wilde was. X. Careaga

Dignity and Vulnerability: Strength and Quality of Character
Published in Hardcover by University of California Press (1997)
Author: George W. Harris
Amazon base price: $40.00
Used price: $14.95
Average review score:

An insightful, convincing discussion of an important topic.
This book makes an invaluable contribution to discussions of vulnerability and its connections with human dignity. Harris argues against a line of thought running from the Stoics through Christianity and down to Kant that insists that whenever character weakens or crumbles, it does so because it lacks the strength ideal character must have. Harris contends that there are admirable character traits that can destroy us in tragic circumstances. In other words, self-destruction can be a manifestation of what is good in a person's character, instead of being a function of vice or weakness. Moreover, while the idea of dignity is usually associated with Kant, Harris argues that only a more Aristotelian view of life and character can do justice to the notion of dignity. Contrary to Kant and the Stoics, Harris argues that the road to a compelling conception of dignity runs through a proper appreciation of our vulnerability. Using the lead character from William Styron's Sophie's Choice, a mother forced by a Nazi officer to choose which of her children must die, Harris insists that only better luck or bad character could save Sophie from her subsequent agony and eventual suicide. Her breakdown owes to the fact that she is a loving mother forced to aim directly at the destruction of one child to save the other. Harris parts company with Kant and the Stoics here, neither of whom say that invulnerability is easy or inevitable, but both of whom deny any connection between vulnerability and good character. Like others, Harris raises serious doubts about the Kantian conception of motivation and justification, but he does so with unusual clarity and precision. Furthermore, Harris mounts a persuasive direct attack on the Kantian conception of dignity, and by so doing, breaks the Kantian monopoly on this concept. Where Stoicism is concerned (Harris also considers Epicurean strategies), Harris considers Martha Nussbaum's account in The Therapy of Desire. There she expresses sympathy with Stoic fears about emotional excess and disfigurement. Harris closely examines Nussbaum's arguments about the excesses of anger and romantic love and offers a very convincing critique. All in all, Dignity and Vulnerability is a remarkable little book. One only wishes that it were a bigger one, with more of the same insights and sharp analysis.

Timeless themes and characters
It's easy to see why Middlemarch is a classic. The theme of reality not living up to one's ideals is a thread that runs through the lives of most of the major characters, and is instantly recognizable and relevant nearly a century and a half after the book was written.

Idealism is most evident in Dorothea Brooke. She wants to lead a learned life of service to others, but Casaubon is not interested in teaching her much, and the great work she initially believes he is writing is an irrelevant, disorganized bunch of notes. Tertius Lydate is also an idealist whose ambition is to make contributions to the medical field. Before he marries Rosamund Vincy, he sees her as the feminine ideal, a woman who will provide unquestioning support and an emotional haven. Instead, she turns out to be a self-centered spendthrift who ennervates him. He ends up with no money or energy for his research, and must concentrate on making enough money to support his wife's extravagance. Interestingly, the characters who end up the happiest, Mary Garth and Fred Vincy, lack such lofty ideals.

One of Eliot's strengths is her sympathy and compassion for her characters, despite their faults. However, she is no stylist, and I found her prose to be awkward and stilted. The reader needs to be patient with this book, because Eliot's style makes it somewhat difficult to get through.

George Eliot's greatest novel
Middlemarch has been described as the one Victorian novel written for grownups. Here, Eliot combines the multiple and interlocking plot lines so beloved by the Victorians with adult characters facing real problems. Particularly engaging is Dorothea Brooke's efforts to find a way to serve, if not achieve, greatness. Rather than undertake some great work herself -- something that Victorian women were not encouraged to do -- she chooses to dedicate herself to supporting a man that she mistakenly believes to be creating a major work. Similarly, Lydgate's slow downfall is realistically portrayed. Unlike many of the works of Dickens, Middlemarch's multiple plots work well together. If you have not read anything by George Eliot, this is the book to begin with.

A Marvellous Classic!
This is a beautiful and romantic novel not to be missed by any fan of classic literature. The thick volume (795 pages) may be an instant put-off for some readers and the story does take a little while to develop, but TRUST ME, once you get past the first 50 pages, you'll be HOOKED and finding it difficult to put down the book.

I love George Eliot's style of writing - beautifully and distinctively eloquent and expressive, and with such observance and skills in depicting the depths and complexities of human relations and the demands and passions of the heart. The book also explores the issues of "class" (e.g. in the courtship between gentleman Fred Vincy and working class Mary Garth), "money" (e.g. questions raised over Featherstone's will after the old miser's death), "politics" (on elections and the cause promoted by the 'liberal' Middlemarchers), "scandals" (especially concerning the dark secrets of the respected banker, Mr Bulstrode) and even "murder" - all portrayed brilliantly in high drama and with engrossing suspense.

My favourite character is the heroine, the virtuous Dorothea Brooke whose life is made miserable by her marriage to the old, dull, selfish academician, Casaubon. Her later acquaintance with young Will Ladislaw who is Casaubon's cousin ("cousin, not nephew", as the vain Casaubon always makes a point to clarify, due to the apparent age gap between them) provides Dorothea with the companionship of someone who listens to and respects her views and who brings a ray of sunshine and cheer into her otherwise lonely life. Love soon blossoms between Dorothea and Will but they're forbidden to court/marry even after Casaubon's death due to a nasty clause put in by Casaubon in his will. It was pure heartache to read of the feelings that these two have for each other but aren't able to express due to societal constraints. Will knows rather early on that he loves her; it takes Dorothea longer to realize her true feelings. I got all teary-eyed when I read the part where Dorothea, alone in her room and in a state of inescapable anguish, moans out "Oh, I did love him!" [And to quote]: "... But she lost energy at last even for her loud-whispered cries and moans: she subsided into helpless sobs, and on the cold floor she sobbed herself to sleep".

The other main characters are no less interesting and will easily capture the reader's heart and compassion. There's Dr Lydgate, an ambitious man whose marriage to the vain, beautiful but spoilt Rosamund Vincy turns out to be a most exasperating and expensive affair (you have to read the book to find out just how SO). There's also a love triangle involving Fred Vincy, Mary Garth and Farebrother (the vicar). The other smaller characters such as Bulstrode, his wife, Mr Garth (Mary's father), a blackmailer (Raffles) and others are all well-painted and believable, each with their own story to tell.

Unlike some classics, this one provides a most satisfying ending because it discloses in the 'Finale' what happens later to the main characters after the "main story" has ended - e.g. up to what age they live to, if the (new) marriages are successful, how many children each couple has, etc.

"Middlemarch" is a truly remarkable classic and a wonderful, wonderful read.

The last swing method you'll ever need
This is the real deal. I found this book by accident a few years ago after I had been diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. I keyed on one of Knudson's major themes, balance, since I have problems with my balance as a result of MS. I now hit the ball further and more consistently, with less effort, than I did in the previous twenty years trying every other method, including Hogan's "Five Lessons" (I was as low as a 4 handicap thanks to a good short game but was inconsistent tee to green). Knudson's method is easier on the back and promotes an aesthetic-looking golf swing. This is a must have for any golfer who is serious about the golf swing.

It works!
This golf swing theory is very much the same as Jim Dent's 'Long and Strong' video. Forget the hands and arms and move the weight back and thru and let the swing happen. I did not believe this would work because it felt so easy and had no power but the opposite is true. I added 20 yards to my drives and now hit a 8 iron an easy 155 yards! No effort at all. The slower I swing the further the ball goes! My average drive was 220-225 , now 255-265 with a lazy effort. I broke 80 three times out of five and I only play once a week. YES...buy this book and try to get Jim Dent's video also.

POETRY IN MOTION
THE best book on golf ever writen. The golf swing at its best.I have tried every method out there and this is the best.I will play with this forever. After all these years it comes down to balance and a simple loading and unloading motion .Ican finally get my hands and arms out of my swing, because now i finally have a swing.I take it with me every where.god bless you george! I HAVE NEVER SWUNG SO EASY AND HIT IT FARTHER AND STRAIGHTER BEFORE!

A standard text for cost accounting
If you are looking for a single volume "bible" on cost accounting, this is likely the best book in print today to fit that bill. It is comprehensive in scope yet has many strengths to ease comprehension and aid readability.

The topics are grouped in six main sections each with several chapters on that topic. Since it is unlikely that you will read this reference / text book left to right as you would a novel this organization helps in finding what you are looking for and focusing on the area(s) of interest.

There are many helpful illustrations and a good use of color as well as chapter summaries and all the exercises you could ever hope for.

A very excellent feature is the use of application problems that take you step-by-step through building an Excel spreadsheet. This is tremendously useful.

The web support is also a good help as well as the streaming video vignettes.

I honestly find this topic very interesting and the 11th edition of this book to be a very valuable resource.

Excellent Book
An easy to read and understand book characterized with the breadth of material and examples.

the best costing book
I've studied cost accounting for 2 years in Hong Kong. The first year I used a really bad text book named 'Costing', I hated studying Costing. However after using the 'Cost Accounting: A Managerial Emphasis (10 Edition)', I become interested in Costing and Management Accounting. And deceide to have CMA exam in future. THIS BOOK IS REALLY GOOD ONE.
