Bond mates!
Dion and her wolf, Gray Hishn, share a telepathic bond. They can scout trails better than any single human. Dion is also a Healer and together they can do Ovousibas, the long forgotten way to heal people from within.

Enemy agents scour the countryside looking for the group which includes them. But they must make it through the frozen mountains, avoiding the Mudsuckers, Masa, the troops, and more to warn their people of impending war.

***Fast paced story. I enjoyed it just as much as I did WOLFWALKER. Lots of fighting, evasiveness, and skill. Tara K. Harper has become one of my favorite Sci-Fi writers.***

One of the best books I've read....
...and I've read a lot. I got this one from a used bookstore( God's gift to those without a job ), and fell in love with it. I'm trying to collect all the wolfwalker novels. Every single one I've read so far is wonderful. I'm pretty picky when it comes to what I'll read, but when I snag up an entire series of books in one week and start doing book searches for the ones I can't find, my friends start collecting them too.

Begining the adventure
This is the first book in Harper's first series. I read this book after 'Cat Scratch Fever' and 'Cataract' were finished. I was hungry for more writing by the artist, and so I searched high and low to find all three books in the series.

In this first book, we are introduced to Dion, a very unusual woman. One day I hope the author writes a prequel, that details some of what the girl's growing up years must have been like. Suffice it to say, she is warrior trained, a healer by choice dedicated to saving lives, and a wolfwalker. Wolfwalkers are introduced to the reader in this series. They are humans who are drawn to wolves, and capable of working/communicating the wolves.

In this story, Dion begins a tale that will last 5 books and three generations of children. Dion begins the road to becoming a legend. It's interesting how a few twists in circumstances can completely change the road you walk. She faces a few very important decisions: the large sense of responsibility she has for those around her, because she has knowledge and skill that others don't have, and how far that responsibility should extend; the decision to save lives, following her healer-rank oaths; the responsibility to take lives while protecting herself, her loved ones, and those that are defenceless. It is the conflict between these three that sucks in the reader and refuses to let go.

I highly suggest this book to anyone who likes action, adventure, tough decisions, great fighting scenes, and personal relationships. This book was quite an eye opener, and a great introduction to the amazing worlds out there waiting for us to visit. (Or maybe not waiting.. maybe dreading..)

This is an incredible book and an incredible series
Tara K. Harper's Wolfwalker series are the best books I've ever read! You feel like you are actually part of the action. While reading it, I had to check more than once that it was my lab and not gray Hishn breathing down my neck! This book is for anyone. It not only tells the tale of a couragous healer, but it helps you look into your own hopes and dreams and ambitions. It's one of those series you can read over and over and never get sick of it! Take it from someone who knows, I've read it five times!

Interesting, funny, entertaining read.
All of Tara Harper's work is well-written with sympathetic characters and just the right amount of conflict. This one in particular is unusual from her other work in that it is strictly hard science fiction. But Tara really entertains in this little novel. A quick read, but wonderful and seamless in her storytelling. I thoroughly recommend it for one of those days you just want to get lost in a good story.

My Favorite Book of Ms. Harpers!
I absolutely loved this book and have read it many times. The sense of humor in it is absolutely wonderful. I still laugh when I re-read it (at least once a year), even though I know what is coming. I loved "Wolfwalker" and "Shadow Leader" too, but "Lightwing" is my favorite.

Story answers some questions, but...
This is the 6th book in the Wolfwaker series, and is a worthy addition to the series. I felt conflicted as I read the book, because the underlying thread of this series has been following Dion's adventures, yet the real focus is on a new character named Talon, a raider. It's an adjustment to shift perspectives, and see life through the eyes of a raider since we've grown to dispise them as much as Dion. I felt myself wanting to find out more about Dion throughout the novel, and hoping that the story would shift back to Dion's perspective. Still, I found the story engaging, and couldn't put the book down...

It looks like Tara Harper may be ready to move away from Dion while staying within the same world. I only wish Tara would give us more information on some of the secondary characters like Rhom, Tehana, Gamon, and Gray Hishn. I love the Wolfwalker series, but I wonder how many books Tara has left in her that adds to the legend of Dion...

the missing book
here it is the book that was skiped in the series.
It fills in the missing time before Ember Dione's girl is born.

This book was amazing...It had me turning pages until the wee hours of the morning because i wanted to find out who was hunting her through the wolf bond and why.

Dion is suffering from many personal losts and she is trying to hide from all the people who are making demands on her life. The Elders who want her to scout and heal for them, the Wolves who want her to keep her promise to rid them of the plague that haunts them, and the mysterious hunter who she can feel through the pack song.

Like all of Harper's books, i was drawn into the story and could feel the stress and pain that all the characters felt....especially Dion's.

This is a series i can read over and over again and it will never get old. Can't wait for the next one to come out.

It's BOOK #5! If you read it out of order, too bad!
Many years after Dion has recovered from the death of her younger son (and almost her own death for the 500th time!), her granddaughter by her remaining birth son undertakes her own adventure.

It was very difficult to bring this later world into alignment with the one we got used to in the first books. It spends a lot of time talking about bio-this and bio-that and how everything on the planet is basically "grown" and not built. Kind'a hokey.

It also has a publication date that is before the fourth book's (Wolf's Bane) publication date. This is too bad. Because, by reading this book before Wolf's Bane, it damaged what would, otherwise, have been a very good story in that 4th book.

This book is ok, but it *was* hard to put myself into this new "future" when I'd become so used to Dion and Aranur's world.

I just Loved it
It was a great story that holds a exitement at berable levels, after a long day of work. It you want fast pace stories this isn't for you, but if your willing to read past the first three chapters, it will be will worth the wait.

Wonderfully Descriptive
I found this book to be my favorite. I like Star Wars novels usually, but the stories in the Wolfwalker series are truly my love. I have read Grayheart numerous times. The mixture of music is what truly makes it my favorite of the series. Grayheart is a wonderful character and the connection of family thought lost and then found is a wonderful resolution to old conflicts. It's a must read, one to read slowly to savor the flavor.

Not so good
I actually went looking here, for this book, so that I could warn people off. What a tremendous let-down, to come out of such an interesting premise! The writing, oh, the writing! I have been afraid, since reading this book, to pick up any book with a similar title. If you like action and suspense, and plot twists, fine. Want quality prose? Look elsewhere.

Caterrific
Cat Scratch Fever was the first of Tara Harpers books I read and it sold me on her as an author. In Cat Scratch fever we learn about the psycic links between the colonists and the animals and the promise to the cats. Tsia wants one of the animal links unfortunately hers is to the cats. She avoids using her link and does not want to lose it because of the other benefits to the link. Then Tsia gets into trouble and her link to the cats is helpful and the cats seem to welcome her into their world.

Cat Scratch Fever
A vivid account of one woman's struggles with her telepathic link to an interdicted species, this story is not for the light reader. Seemingly effortlessly, Tara K. Harper plunges you into Tsia's harsh, chaotic world so that you feel every lash of the n-rod, every drop of sweat, every heart-pounding moment that could mean life or death.

Call of the Cat
In Cat Scratch fever we learn about the psycic links between the colonists and the animals and the promise to the cats. Tsia's guide link unfortunately is to the cats. Cataract takes place ten years later, she has avoided using her link but now the mercenaries she has been hiding out among are in trouble and her link to the cats is helpful, plus has been useful to one of the cats in giving her the ability to help it. I can't wait for the third installment to the cat series.

Excellent keeps you at the edge of your seat
A great bok Tara really puts her heart and soul into her writing. Keeps you curious the whole time.

Difficult to comprehend unless read several times.
Unless you've read previous books in her "cat" series, it's difficult to grasp what's going on [I haven't read any by her except for all of the Wolf books]. Otherwise, detail abounds and the *telepathy* theme is marvelous [as well as the Ixia, which I didn't fully understand at first...read the book]

Tara, how could you.....?
If you have read the first three novels in the Wolfwalker series (and if you haven't, I suggest that you do) do not, I repeat, DO NOT read Grayheart or Wolf's Bane. Ember Dione maMarin was my favorite character, and Harper destroyed her life. I don't ask for sugar plum fairies and sprites dancing under the pale moon light, but I do expect to be able to read a story without feeling sick to my stomach over the non-stop agony my character is experiencing. Wolfwalker, Shadow Leader, and Storm Runner had plenty of pain and fear, but those emotions were at least balanced by excitement and joy. I don't know what Tara Harper was thinking...maybe she was having a bad year, or maybe she has every intention of making up for it in future novels, but unless she redeems herself, my advice is to stay away from these novels.

Excellent, heart wrenchingly fabulous!
First of all, this is not the fifth book, it is the 4th. The fifth is yet to be published. (Grayheart is the 6th) This book will knock your socks off. Yes, it is very depressing and very upsetting, but very necessary. If you are a fan of the Wolfwalker series and have faith in the author - you'll love it. If you prefer a happy ending, however, heed caution before reading this book. This book needed to take place though - Dion needed to discover herself - she was unhappy with her life and very discontented. Trust me, it is a tear jerking read, but you'll love it. (And if you pay really close attention to the epilogue you may realize that the ending isn't quite so bad afterall) I loved it - and would recommend it to anyone.

"Good Grief!" Not an easy book to read!
I LOVED this book! But I also think that I was "ready" for it since my father passed away this year. Like they say, no one can understand grief until it is experienced. The end was a little confusing but I'm hoping that Aranur's story helps to clear some of that up. Like the critic says, the book is NOT an escapist novel, if you are looking for a book that has a solid happy ending, this is not it. Instead it will rip-away everything that you knew and show you that "the future is all that holds us together (Gamon)".
