A brilliant sequel...
...marred only by the untimely death of the author. Volume Two focuses on the second half of the extraordinary career of the MOST extraordinary W.D. Hamilton. The papers presented here are almost without exception key components of much of what many of us regard as an appropriate evolutionary approach to the origins of sex, kinship, disease response etc. and the book would be worth having just to get all of these in a convenient bound form instead of the dog-eared xeroxes that doubtless clog up many of your files. Beyond that however we also get more of hamilton's delightful insights into just how he came up with an idea, who he was talking to, where he was while he was working on a concept, what he thought of a piece of work years later, etc. etc, -in other words all the "gossip" that when you know it makes science a real human endeavor, and when it is left out tends to leave many of us cold. Above all else one gets the sense that here was someone who was without question a genius, but was also a lovely person as well -someone with a sense of humor and a sense of his own mortality, who at the same time could revel in the sheer beauty of an idea, or the notion of life as a cosmic joke that must nonetheless be taken seriously. Anyone who is interested in the DOING of science as well as the content would be well advised to browse through this book. The intro by Dawkins is frankly skippable, but the rest? Sheer joy!

A real gem!
This is an outstanding collection of some of the most important papers in evolutionary ecology, and when one can get them with Hamilton's wry, insightful, and occasionally extremely funny commentary, all I can say is "BUY IT!" No, Hamilton's mathematics is not for the faint of heart, but even if the thought of equations gives you the willies, you will find valuable stuff about the nature of science and scientists in the "interlinear" that links each of the stand-alone papers. I look forward to Volume 2 with great excitement!

Worth its weight in reduced plumbing bills
Friday night, after our condominium's maintenance service had closed for the weekend, my garbage disposal stopped working. My sink was full of garbage. I remembered someone have given me a copy of this book and looked up garbage disposal. There, in several brilliantly clear paragraphs, Gene and Katie Hamilton told me exactly how to fix my machine using a little gadget that came with the machine that I would never have known had a purpose -- without electrocuting myself or cutting off my fingers. There is nothing more thrilling than fixing something you never thought you could fix yourself. (Here's a situation where the word "empowerment" really means something.) When I think of the times I have paid a plumber a small fortune for a minor fix like this that I could, with the right instructions, have fixed myself...I wish I'd had this book sooner! I am definitely giving a copy of this book to some fellow plumbing dummies for Christmas.

A good reference for planning DIY projects.
This book lists a number of potential do-it-yourself (DIY) home-improvement and repair projects. Each project has a short description of the labor and materials involved, along with a comparison of the costs and time for DIY versus hiring a professional. It offers a realistic approach to what it takes to do the project yourself, and it warns you of projects where your inexperience can lead to costly damage (for example, marring your hardwood floor during a refinish job). This book is not really a manual for exactly how to do a project, but it does offer some helpful hints. My only complaints are that the book could be a little more broad in scope and that it have a logical order how the projects are listed. Overall, it is worth reading if you are trying to decide whether to undertake home improvements yourself or hire a contractor.

Home Improvement for Dummies
My recommendation would be to not buy this book. Unless you mostly want to read about how to hire a contractor. There are a few books out there much better for the weekend do it yourselfer then this.

A good primer
Having just entered into home-owning (versus apartment-dwelling) I've embarked on a crash course in home improvement. So far, this book has been a good resource, especially in terms of =illustrating= what I'm supposed to do. I need the visual cues to understand how part A is supposed to fit into part B and so on. This is one book I think I will be referring to often.

A Dummie for buying this book...
You'll still be a dummie after reading this book. For those with little or no knowledge of carpentry, you won't find what you are looking for in this book.

There are no photos and almost NO illustrations (or drawings), so things are just described and you'll have to imagine how it looks. For example, the vast variety of screws and nails are addressed without a single illustration! A picture says a thousand words and helps the reader to visualize and comprehend the topic, but you won't find it here.

Skip this book and try Black & Decker's Complete Guide to Home Carpentry. It's loaded with color photos of the actual work you'll be doing and explains everything step-by-step.

Truly for dummies
When you read the title of this book, please take it to heart. It really is only for dummies. Who else but a dummy would need to know how to nail, how to push a button to turn on a saw, etc? There is no real information on basic carpentry skills such as the use of a framing square, framing itself, the use of leveling tools to make sure you are starting with level ground, and so on. A more appropriate title for this book would have been "Home Improvment for Dummies" as one could not take knowledge from this book and build from scratch.

I will no longer purchase "For Dummies" books without checking it out at a bookstore first.

Carpentry For Dummies?
First time builders need not worry! This books explains all you need to know. From tools and uses to step by step instructions. I highly recommend this for any beginner.

Superficial treatment
This book provides a few of the basics that you will need to know if you are contemplating a small remodeling project. If you are planning on contracting your own house, this volume will not help you much. It provides only very superficial coverage of the information needed to intelligently communicate your requirements to subcontractors and evaluate their responses.
