An incredible tale of the old west
Durango Gold is the story of a former confederate officer inclined to philosophy but forced into the role of frontier detective by the territorial governor and presented with a complex, lethal challenge. Michael Haley is a superb storyteller with a knack for weaving an incredible tale of the old west replete with intrigue, murder, revenge, and romance. Durango Gold is a unique and engaging novel that is highly recommended for fans of the western frontier, and would be greatly appreciated by anyone who enjoys a good historical novel that gives meticulous attention to detail, character development, plot twists, and well crafted storytelling from first page to last.

Hillerman meets L' Amour
Kudo's to Haley!

As an amateur New Mexico history buff, 4th generation native, and avid book reader, I believe that at long last someone has filled the void left by Louie L'Amour's death, and Tony Hillermans infrequent books.

New Mexico, one of the prettiest places in the world, offers a rich history, untold stories of the people who occupied this territory, that until now has been locked up in historical archives.

Mr. Haley pulls out the history, wraps a western fiction around it, and packages it in a fast moving, well developed story that has memorable characters that the keep the readers interest until the end, ultimately leaving the reader for a desire to read more.

Both of Mr. Haley's novels, Durango Gold and the Medicine Man cover large portions of the 5th largest state in the Country, from its high mountain deserts to the snow layered mountains, with intricate details only a native could know.

Something for everyone (action, romance, history, and just a plain good story), the next novel could only be more New Mexican if eaten over an order of huevos and tortillas at the Frontier.

"Durango Gold" a real page turner
I found DURANGO GOLD to be a real page turner. It was suspenseful, dramatic, tense and tight. The setting painted a colorful picture of northern New Mexico. The three-dimensional characters vibrated with sounds, smells, images and feelings. I could taste Eli's favorite beer, it's biting fullness, the hops and barley, and the fermentation that almost made me want to belch. I could feel his heart beat for a woman as his eyes roamed over the desolate range that he rides. DURANGO GOD makes Louis L'Amour come alive again. Only this time, it's Michael Haley, and Michael doesn't miss a beat.

So that's what's wrong with my family!
As they say, you can't judge a book by its cover but when I saw the title, I had to read it. As I was checking it out of my local library, the woman in line behind me saw the cover and was disappointed that I was taking it out instead of returning it. This all speaks volumes about the need for someone to explain how some families get so dysfunctional in the first place and more importantly how to counteract their negative influence and hopefully recover from it. I've known for years that the root of my depression was in the family dsyfunction I grew up with but I couldn't quite explain how. We didn't become dysfunctional by the classic things like alcoholism or drug abuse but by something more insidious. Reading this book helped me at least start to unravel the tangled mess of my depressive family relationships. It's not a cure-all but it's a great start!

Invaluable. A must read
Dr. Michael Yapko, a leading expert on depression, has written a book on depression that offers sound advice for people who are depressed and their families. If you, or a loved one, is depressed, this book is must reading. Yapko surveys the myths of depression and offers solutions on how families can help one another. This book should be must reading for any family that is experiencing depression

This wonderful book empowers families to beat depression.
The many endorsements from his colleagues enticed me to buy Dr. Yapko's book. It lived up to and even surpassed the high expectations! It was easy to read and totally engrossed me as I finally came to understand how my family created the environment in which I learned what Dr. Yapko would probably call "faulty patterns" of thinking and relating. I've been depressed, and I've been treated with antidepressants, and I now understand much more about why the drugs never improved my ability to handle my family better. I learned a lot from the many stories he provides that illustrate his key points, and I often felt he was talking directly to me. There's no doubt he knows what depression is about, and he inspires the confidence to learn to do things differently. I give this book my highest recommendation!

"Kill the Medicine Man" is Killer
Haley tell the story of the Navaho struggle to hang on to their traditional home land after conquest. It is a conflict of cultures and technology, but Haley doesn't make the story a sociology or anthropology treatise, or even a lecture on the evils of manifest destiny. He makes it a read worth of "Louie."
