Oedipus Tyrannus - Power and Clarity for a Modern Audience
I first stumbled across this edition whilst searching the web for an acting edition of Oedipus to use with my Year Eleven Drama class. Once I received this edition I was so pleased that I had taken the gamble to purchase it.

For anyone searching for an 'acting' rather than 'literary' edition of Oedipus, I would strongly suggest that you have a close look at this publication. Peter Meineck and Paul Woodruff's collaboration makes the tragedy of Oedipus very accessible for a modern audience. This publication contains an Introduction with explanations of the history of Greek theatre, the nature of tragedy, the function of the chorus, and an analysis of the plot and characterisation. This edition also comes with foot-of-the-page notes and stage directions which are valuable when studying Oedipus as Drama.

What I particularly liked about this publication was its readability, without being simplistic. This translation was characterised by clarity, accuracy, and power of language, retaining the emotion of the original text. I have been so impressed with this translation that I am seriously considering purchasing a class set to use with my students.

It was a pleasure to see a copy of Oedipus especially developed for the stage rather than the page.

Paul Revere's Ride
Published in Audio Cassette by Books on Tape (1994)
Author: David Hackett Fischer

Average review score:

Revere comes to life once again as a true American Patriot
The book is actually two books in one: the first focuses on Paul Revere and how his life was shaped and changed by events of the day. And his role leading up to the morning of April 19th, 1775. The second is an incredibly descriptive narrative on the first battle of the American Revolution. Names, places, times are all referenced and the reader feels as though they have become a part of the story. And for those who love details, the Appendicies are outstanding. Fischer has delved into every possible account given by those who actually took part and were there on the battle field. This book is really worth a read and will become a favorite reference book to all of those who are lovers of Colonial American History. If you ever get a chance to visit Minuteman National Park, bring a copy of the book along with you to read as you stand upon Lexington Green, the Old North Bridge, Meriam's corner or the many other places referenced in the book. Much has changed but much has remained the same. It'll make the whole trip that much more worthwhile.

Sometimes you can smell the gunpowder
David Hackett Fischer has written an engaging and extremely detailed account of Paul Revere and the Battles of Lexington and Concord. With an erudite but accessible style of writing, Hackett has satisfied both my love of good solid history and an enjoyable read.

Fischer gives the reader a historiograhpic overview of the study of Paul Revere's ride, from the celebratory to the cynical, we are shown that this man and his actions have engendered lively debate in academia.

However, not many readers may give a fig about historiography. They will however be immediately drawn into this excellent narrative account of Revere's ride, its aftermath and the thorough background provided about his life, and the life of his "adversary" General Gage.

Fischer has done something that many historians long to do, write both a readable and academically solid book. I hope that historians can use this book as an example for how to write history, and the public will read it to see that history doesn't have to be horribly dull.

Paul Revere's Ride
In David Fischer's book, "Paul Revere's Ride", one gets a sense of a strong and interesting narrative. The book covers Paul Revere and General Thomas Gage's life as well as the events leading up to Paul Revere's famous ride. The book also discussed the Battles at Concord and Lexington. The book went into great detail of both men's lives as well as both sides of the battles. The title of the book was somewhat misleading because Paul Revere took many rides for liberty and did not act alone on his famous ride. It was a very interesting book because it gave both sides of the battles at Concord and Lexington; however, I found that the appendix were too numerous to keep going back to read. There were just enough pictures to maintain the reader's interest. I thouroughly enjoyed reading this book and David Hackett Fischer brought Paul Revere to life with his well organized narrative. One could almost picture Paul Revere on his horse riding down the street.

Interesting
A solid translation of the fascinating and passionate story of Dionysus in Thebes, although it lacks the lyricism of other translations. Woodruff's version is meant to be performed aloud, and so it has more of the feel of a play to it. Students of literature and classics might want a different version; students of drama and theatre would be interested in this translation.

The most verbally extravagant of all Greek dramas.
If, like me, you had Greek Tragedy down as an austere thing, full of parched plains, unswerving Fate and dour verse, then 'The Bacchae' might come as a pleasant surprise. It has these things of course, but the first quality that shocks is the vibrant, fervid excess of the language. The story concerns Dionysus, the God of wine, the Life Force, the Chaos of the Irrational etc., who inspires a possessed devotion in his acolytes, as they express themselves in high-flown, ecstatic rhapsodies. Not every one takes this proto-hippie's divinity seriously, in particular the family of his mortal mother, led by the impetuous teenage king Pentheus, who sees all this Bacchanalia in the woods and mountains in loose robes as so much lechery. Dionysus exacts such terrible revenge on these unbelievers that 'Bacchae' makes Shakespeare's 'Titus Andronicus' look like a Julie Andrews vehicle.
If Sophocles' 'Oedipus the King' is the first detective story, than 'Bacchae' might be the first police procedural - a central sequence sees Pentheus arrest Dionysus and interrogate him, a scene as tightly written and suspenseful as any thriller. But detection and policing, embodying the forces of reason and the Law, have no power against the Irrational or Unknowable, and Pentheus is soon made mad, his order and sense of self in tatters. The terrible grip of irony familiar from Greek Tragedy gives the play a violent momentum, but the most extraordinary scenes take place offstage, related in vivid and tumultuous monolgues by messengers - the whirlwind revenge of Dionysus' female followers on the forces of surveilling civilisation, and the cruel enactment of the God's revenge. This idea of hearing about improbable catastrophes but not being able to see them adds ot the supernatural terror that is the play's fevered life-blood.

One of the best translations out there
I am a classical history major with a focus on poetry and drama. I have actually read Bacchae in Attic Greek and I have to say that I find this translation to be one of the most fluid and natural of any that I have ever read. I would highky recommend this to anyone looking for a well-written, very gory introduction to Greek theatre. This edition is also great for using as a script, wheras many translations are good only for reading. I just put up a production using this translation and my actors were very comfortable with the wonderful language Woodruff uses.

Read the qualifications carefully.
I would recommend many texts written on hearing aids for consumers and health care personnel far more than this one. While certainly a practical manual for dispensers, this is not a book meant for audiology students or medical professionals (try Harvey Dillon's Hearing Aids or the Valente series instead). A well-written introduction to the topic, but not grounded fully in medical and scientific research to be a primary text or reference for audiologists.

Good For Senior Patients
"This is an easy, informative read. I recommend it to my senior patients who are concerned that trying to overcome a hearing loss will put them at risk of a bad purchase decision. Now they know what to expect from a hearing professional when they decide to purchase a hearing aid."

A wealth of solid, no-nonsense information
Collaboratively written by auditory prosthetics specialists and practitioners Paul Popp and Gregg Hacket, The Hearing Healthcare Practitioner's Handbook: A Guide To The Successful Treatment Of Hearing Loss With Auditory Prosthetics is a thorough, comprehensive presentation on virtually all forms of hearing loss and their treatment, from auditory rehabilitation to assistive listening devices and the laws that govern them. A wealth of solid, no-nonsense information marks this first-class reference, and strongly highly recommended for the hearing health care practitioner as well as the non-specialist general reader who has experienced hearing problems and wants to learn more about what causes them and what can be done.
