Do not expect pretty pictures and slick shiny pages in this text. Instead what you will get is a great reference book that you will use repeatedly. My 1971 edition is worn out so I bought the recent edition. Also this edition has many more references incorporating recent work.
I do have one caveat. Before you delve into this book please be sure that you have a good working knowledge of the NT. If you do not then get one of the survey books first. There are excellent survey texts put out by folks like Gundry, Kromaki, and others.
I cannot say enough about the quality of this work. If you are serious about NT scholarship rush out and get this book. You may not agree with the author's theology in all areas but the book is definitely a MUST. Definitely a valuable addition for your study of the New Testament.

This has pros and cons. The reader can see how NT thought develops and the way in which each author uses a particular theme more easily. On the flip side, this has a nasty tendency to "flatten" the distinctions between each of the human author's of the text.
As such, I would not say this should be a person's FIRST Biblical Theology. BUT, if one has a good NT Theology (Ladd, preferably), then this would be a very good SECOND choice for a Biblical Theology.
Guthrie is renown as a foundational text for NT Theology. I find myself referring to it often as it catalogues various themes and doctrines so well. One does not have to accept all of Guthrie's theology to find this useful.
Highly recommended.

As a lay person attempting to understand The Pastoral Letters so as to lead a Bible Study group in them, I found Guthrie's exegesis of 1 Timothy, 2 Timothy and Titus excellent and well pitched for my level. I tend to find the Tyndale NT Commentaries more 'meaty' than Bible Speaks Today (BST), and yet more approachable than Word Biblical Commentaries (WBC) or the New International Commentaries on the New Testament (NICNT) and this volume in the series is no exception.
Guthrie's coverage of issues such as dating and authorship are very interesting, yet thankfully separated from the main commentary so those whom are not interested in the issues need not be bothered by them.
All in all, an excellent tool for those seeking to increase their understanding of God's Word, especially in a lay leadership capacity.

Guthrie's work (in line with the style of the Tyndale New Testament Commentary series) appears to have a less 'scholarly' audience, with less reference to and discussion of the Greek, manuscript evidence and so on. Yet, Guthrie's introduction (covering authorship, original audience and canonicity) was excellent for the lay reader.
Overall, a fine book to get you started with the Epistle to the Hebrews. Really helpful to today's reader, who is so removed from the original culture and context.

The two books complement each other well, either one is a great buy, for your money, Carson is a better value. If they were the same price, Guthrie would edge out Carson, but not by much. Stay away from all other NT intro's, such as Brown, Kummel, Ladd, etc. None can compete with Carson or Guthrie. I have Brown's sitting on my shelf collecting dust, whereas Guthrie and Carson I reference often.
If you're buying a commentary on a specific book, check out my written review for Carson's Intro. I list the best of the best, however, I don't list Bible books that have no clear cut stand out commentary. For example, Mark has several that are arguably the best, but none stand out (stay away from Hooker on Mark, it's garbage). Carson must have lost his mind when he endorsed her in his commentary survey....
