Unequalled achievement
This audio version is a masterpiece and is destined to become a classic of audio drama along with Welles' "War of the Worlds" and the plays of Norman Corwin. ZBS has outdone itself.

Extraordinary tales of whimsy for youthful readers.
I first read this book at a young age when I was still fascinated with the world of dinosaurs. Gotten over the addiction by now, being almost out of highschool, I still look back on my memories with this book, and its sister book: "The World Beneath", with great fondness. The illustrations, no less that artistry, are high above the par of your average children's picture book. And, they are only outdone by the spellbinding story; brought to life with the loving detail that could only be conjured by a true dinosaur fan. This book would be a welcome addition to any child's wish list and makes for a lasting impression.

Beautiful book, interesting read
Although this book is considered a children's book, or something for young teens, I believe it's enjoyable for people of all ages. The artwork is gorgeous and the detail Gurney puts into creating his world is amazing. The book is written in the form of a journal, written mostly by Arthur Denison, but with a few entries written by his son, Will. Because Arthur is a scientist, Gurney can believably put in a great deal of detailed information about the world of Dinotopia. I loved reading this book and I especially loved looking at it.

Superb sketching for real artists
Yes, this book has great (and I mean really great) sketches, apparently done on a marathon road trip in the '70s or '80s. Dynamic, free-flowing, expressive, two talented young dudes having a blast and amazing themselves with their own virtuosity. BUT- is this the same Thomas Kinkade who later trademarked the name "Painter of Light" and churns out the dumbest, treacly-est fantasy landscapes featuring "charming" cottages decorated with sprinles of sugary highlights, with quasi-religious titles designed to appeal to the Born-Again crowd in shopping malls everywhere? .... They ought to re-issue the book, though, it's really something to gaze at.

Outstanding presentation of the subject
University art programs should require their students studying drawing and sketching to buy this book. The Artist's Guide to Sketching is essential to the artist's library and is a must for people just starting. After checking out this book from library at the university I attend, I knew that I had to own a copy for myself. The sketches are beautifully executed and each has a lesson along with it. This book will inspire you in one way or another. Thanks and praises to the authors.

Excellent!
This book is very good! In this book, Dink, Josh, and Ruth Rose visit Wallis Wallice in Maine. Dink, Josh and Ruth Rose go lobstering, have a picnic, find a cave, and something else.

Just the right amount of mystery and intrigue!
Dink, Josh, and Ruth Rose visit an old castle on the coast of Maine and set out to discover what is making the screeching sounds which everyone believes to be a ghost! Along the way they run into flickering lights after dark, a secret underground passage and a dangerous, water-filled cave.

My 5-year old kept flipping back to study the map and wouldn't let me stop!

magical for dino-loving stamp collectors
This book is about dinosaur-commemorative stamps, the art behind the stamps and the dinosaurs that inspired the art. Many children (and their parents) are discovering stamps in the mid-to-late elementary years, and the beautiful dinosaur stamp releases of the past few years are a great way to lead from a small child's fascination with dinosaurs to begin a lifetime hobby. I purchased the featured page "The World of Dinosaurs" as a stocking stuffer for my child when it came out a couple of years ago, and we were delighted to match it up with the book. The book itself was a discovery of a stamp-loving friend. As a person who does not buy books that will only be read once, I recommend it as both a gift and a worthy addition to the home library.

Apalachian writing at its finest!
This book is written so well I have read it many times. It is set in the depression era and brings you to that time with laughter and tears. Billy C. CLark describes small town living along the Big Sandy River which was once the cities life. I think people of all ages would love this heart felt book.

Beautiful artwork...an adventure story with social messages
Dinotopia will appeal to different age groups for different reasons. Very young children (especially those interested in dinosaurs) will understand little of the story, but will appreciate the multitude of dinosaur pictures. You can 'read' this book to a very young child by simply commenting on each page's pictures.

Slightly older children will begin to be engaged by the story...an adventure tale, presented as if the book were a lost journal that has been recovered.

Youth and adults can appreciate the story's deeper messages about peace and simplicity of living, and the beautiful artwork...far beyond the typical illustrations in a children's book, both in quantity and quality.

A MUST HAVE FOR ANY LIBRARY-CHILDREN AND ADULT!!
I found out about the dinotopia books by chance. I am suprised at how many children and adults dont know about this book. This book and the sequel book are absolutely fantastic! I read it to my older son, who was 6 at the time in one day! He now reads it in installments to his brother and sister. A true classic that needs to be up there with Tom Sawyer, Treasure Island and such!
I can say I will still be reading this again when Im 80!
Trust Me You Will Not Be Disapointed In This Story!
Makes a great gift for any Dinosaur Lover!

Absolutely Breathtaking
This book is one of the most incredible books ever written. I thoroughly recommend it to everyone. Of all the books which deserve cult status, this book is the most breathtaking.

The artwork is amazing! The paintings simply take your breath away. Whenever I want to escape, I read this book. Whenever I want to immerse myself again in the land of Dinotopia, I just look at one of the fabulous paintings and i'm there.

The book is accessible to everyone - there are characters which connect with every person on this earth. The story is magical and deserves greater praise than I could ever give it.

I LOVE THIS BOOK! PLEASE BUY IT!!!!!

PLEASE!

A pale shadow of its predecessor.
As the sequel to the original Dinotopia, this book is something of a disappointment. The art is still as incredible and magical as ever. The perspective, however, has been dropped from first person to third-a very poor transition. The happy, warm suspicion that lingers in the back of your mind, telling you to believe in this peaceful island, is lost completely and leaves the story cold and even a little sappy. The art alone-for this IS an art book-keeps my rating up at 4 stars, and the fanciful tale and explanation of how the fateful journal came to leave the island is enjoyable enough.

Superb Sequel
The first book was one of a kind...until the second came along and finished the story. Dinotopia: The World Beneath is a must have for anyone who has read the first book. There are new adventures, amazing new discoveries, plenty of exciting action and a satisfying conclusion to everything. The illustrations are just as spectacular as they were the first time and the story does not dilute itself one bit. I urge you to find yourself a copy of this book, and also a copy of the original if you have not read that either; both are amazing books meant for all ages.

James Gurney is the best writer I have read about.
When I first read Dinotopia, I just enjoyed the pictures. But now, I wish that I was in Dinotopia. I wish I was a skybax rider, soaring high above the clouds. James Gurney makes his world seem real, so real that you can almost reach out and touch it. Because of his beautiful paintings, you are "reborn" into a wondreful fantasy world. I am only 12, but my love of Dinotopia has sprouted, just like shipwreaked humans on the island. I have read both books, plus I have read all the paperback books. Instead of the views of Will and Arthur Denison, the paperback books give you a different perspectave of life on Dinotopia. Like in "River Quest", the book gives a perspectave of a young 13 year old girl, who becomes the rainwater habitat partners and how Mangolia and Paddlefoot recover the Polongo River. If anyone likes the detailed, wonderful world of Dinotopia, I recommend reading the Dinotopian series as well.

Night Before Christmas

A Happy Christmas to All
This beautiful book was in my family as a hard cover edition for many years and was a Christmas Eve tradition for my four sons when they were growing up. It's poor battered body disappeared some time after the last of my little ones went off into the adult world. I am so delighted to see it back again, though this time as a nicely affordable soft cover. Clement C. Moore's enchanting story poem already provides an atmosphere filled with warmth and joyful expectation and with the addition of Tasha Tudor's quaint, nostalgic water-colors from an antique New England the Christmas magic is complete!
The winter landscapes fill our senses and Tasha's own gray tabby cat and Welsh Corgi welcome us into this charming world.
Tasha's Santa that you will meet in this book has been portrayed as the poem describes him...a right jolly old elf. He's not that much larger than the corgi and his team really consists of eight "tiny" reindeer. His pointy ears and his Eskimo mukluks add to the delightful ambiance of the book. He dances with the toys and with the happy animals and we can truly believe it will be a happy Christmas for all.
I hope this book becomes a Christmas Eve tradition for many, many more families.

A beautiful edition, to give as a gift
We have an inexpensive paperback version (see our reviews) of this classic poem, and we said that's enough for us. That was before we looked through this beautifully illustrated (by Bruce Whatley) edition of The Night Before Christmas.

The lyrics are the same, from book to book, but the fanciful illustrations in this one are enough to engage adults and children as they read this book together.

The perfect gift for any family whose Christmas tradition includes reading this classic!

The Night Before Christmas illustrated by Tasha Tudor
I discovered this book 31 years ago, for my daughter and it is still loved by all the family. The illustrations are wonderful, warm, charming and delightful and bring a special meaning to the story. We still read it to all the young children on Christmas Eve and for adults we read the story and pass a grab bag gift every time the word THE is mentioned. It would not be Christmas without this book. It is magical.
