In Silence Of The Country, writer and a professor of writing (University of Alberta), Kristjana Gunnars composes her poetry with a craft and precision of language that compels her readers to enter into the sights, sounds, smells, colors, light, and landscape of her British Columbia home country. Later That Night: Darkness comes seldom these days. High/winds find their way between branches, deep/rain covers the red cedars, and in all the view//to the end of no horizon, only fog or mist/fades into greys and purples. Night never/falls any more, too often beset by moon-//light stronger than sun, the air outside/the window lit in a neon of space. I think of/moon-bathers in their pink saris, the surprise//every time I pull the white curtain slightly/aside, the one that trails along the bedroom/floor, and find no darkness, once again.
