Great book...
This was one of my favorite books when I was a little girl. My mom and I used to go to the library just to get it and I always knew exactly where it was in the library. I don't know why we never just bought it. I guess being a library book made it more special. Recently (about 20 years later) I thought I'd surprise my mom with a used copy. First I couldn't find a copy and now I see this book is going for [$$$] I think we should be ashamed of ourselves for exploiting a beautiful children's story, ironically written about love and generosity, and turning it into what everything else seems to have become, an empty, profit-driven shame. I'd reccomend this book very highly anytime-- at a reasonable price.

Heart-warming story
I, too, first heard this book read on Capt. Kangaroo. I often checked it out of the library to read to my two young children. My father would push them in their strollers. He walked along when they learned to ride bikes and roller skate. Now at 76 years old, he is suffering from Parkinson's and has to be pushed in a wheelchair. My grandson, his great-grandson, loves to help push him. I want to get a copy of this book to read to my father and give to my grandson as a special memory.

What a pity!
I'm not sure how I got my copy of this book, but it has always been one of my favorites. I have had it since I was a little girl, and I was trying to get hold of a copy to give as a present to my niece, and also one to keep for when I have my own children. I suppose the fact that I am going to have to make do with the tatty old copy I have makes it all the more precious, and I'll be sure to keep it safe! I think its a lovely story and one all children should have the opportunity to read.

Happy Winter is a Classic
Happy Winter was also a favorite with my two daughters.

Laurie Colwin, the wonderful food columnist and sadly departed novelist, mentions Happy Winter as the source for an excellent recipe for chocolate cake and indeed the recipe is included.

We had originally read this book in paperback form until it was in pieces and, miraculously, I found a hard cover in pristine condition at a local used bookstore a couple of years ago.

It's a perfect before-bed book - ends with a soothing lullaby-like trance of winter sky poem.

I brought this book with me to a workshop given by Nancy Ekholm Burkert and most in the audience were not familiar with it but all showed keen interest after my introduction.

Happy Winter
In about 1985, my two daughters, who uncannily resembled the two little girls in the book, received a copy of Karen Gundescheimer's Happy Winter as a Christmas gift. In verse form, it tells the story of a charming winter weekend day, from the time the children awake to find the world covered in snow, through breakfast, outdoor play, and indoor activities afterwards. We read it over and over so many times that everyone in our family could probably recite it from memory: "Happy Winter, rise and shine! I love the early morning time. My sister snuggles close to me..." The accompanying pictures are fabulous. Unfortunately, our copy became lost. I want to buy two new ones for my daughters, now 21 and 19, for Christmas. Why, oh why, is this book out of print? This generation's kids are being deprived of an outstanding experience.

Lots of details and wonderful rhymes!
This is an excellent book. The poem contains details of children's winter time activities. While Gundersheimer is more recognized as an illustrator she demonstrates her writing talent in this book.

A Loving Way to Show that Mother and Child Go Together!
The 1983 edition of this simple, attractive book--by one of the most respected authors of books for young children--is illustrated by Karen Gundersheimer. Her multi-colored drawings are reminiscent of those by the renowned illustrator, Maurice Sendak.

The idea that mother and child go together is reinforced several times throughout with phrases like: "Leaves with tree and you with me," or "Sand and sea and you with me," and concluding with, "Sky with blue AND ME WITH YOU!"

The small size of "Some Things Go Together," make it perfect for mother and child reading together, especially with preschool or kindergarten aged children.

a delightful book of fun pairs and wonderful pictures
In "Some Things Go Together" Ashley Wolff has taken a charming 30 year old story and added wonderful, colorful illustrations. The simple rhymns are wimsically pictured by Wolff - such as a mother sitting with her child reading or her colorful parade of clowns, dancing dogs and prancing horses! A book you will love to read to your child and your child will love to read!

My third grade students thoroughly enjoyed the book!
As an elementary school teacher, I incorporate the whole language philosophy into my classroom. I spent an entire month linking the curriculum of my school district to Ms. Ann Whitford Paul's literature. My students learned about math, science, social studies and reading using "Quilts" as our theme. We created individual quilt squares to represent each of my 33 students and I lovingly sewed them together. Quality literature is at the core of my teaching. Eight Hands Round demonstrated such quality and brought joy to my classroom.

Charming
My kids have each, in turn, been read (and read themselves) this adorable book. It is equally loved by boys and girls. The drawings and descriptions of the family's pet cat are so "true" and humorously depicted, that you will recognize your own cat in the story. In our family, it was as popular as was "Pat the Bunny" and "Goodnight Moon" when they were younger.

He He He... *Cackle*Cackle* I'll get you, My Pretty!
In the book THE WITCH WHO WAS AFRIAD OF WITCHES, there were three witches, Polly, the oldest, knew *everything*, Wog, the middles sister, could do *everything* the best. Then, of course, there was the youngest and the most picked on (at least by her sisters :( ) Wendy. This is a very good book, though I disagree that the notion that all witches wear black robes and hats, have warty green noses, and cackle evily. Some are short, wear glasses, and teach english. ^_^';; Heh heh, anyway.. as I said, this is a very good book, even for older children and teenagers alike.

I want you to read this book
These are my favorite exciting parts of the book. My first favorite part is when a ghost named Roger knocks on the door and says, "Trick or treat!" and Wendy says there's nobody home. My next favorite part is when they go to Roger's house to get a broom. When Wendy sits on the broom, and she cackles and gives a little jump, she zooms to the ceiling. Another favorite part is when Wendy puts spells on her sisters, Wog and Polly. Another one is when they come home limping and they think they lost their witch powers. My last favorite part is when they find Wendy and they say that her broom won't work and Polly gets on the broom and she can't take off and Wog gets on the broom and she can't take off either. Then Wendy gets on and cackles and gives a little jump and zooms off out the window faster than they ever flew.

Wendy's a Wonderful Witch
My daughter, who just turned five, recently "discovered" all sorts of things she can be afraid of -- large spiders, strange shadows, monsters, etc. Therefore, I was delighted to find the book, "The Witch Who Was Afraid of Witches," where the heroine, Wendy, is someone who would normally be labeled scary just because she is a witch. But there's nothing to fear about Wendy, who is even afraid of other witches herself. My daughter began the story by asking if the characters would be scary, and ended by rooting for Wendy. The book's underlying message that all of us have special abilities, including the power to face our own fears, is an important one. And the cute, colorful illustrations don't hurt! My daughter loves the story, and we have read it several times.

Toddler relates to this book
This is another book that I would have rated one star less if it were purely up to me, but my toddler's enthusiastic reception of it elevates it from a "poor" book to a "pretty good" one. Simple text and pictures depict children engaged in activities toddlers relate to: playing in water, knocking over blocks, playing dress up, etc. While it may not be a masterpiece in my estimation, it is a fun and interactive book, very suitable for toddlers.
