a very comprehensive timeline
A 600+ page chronology, year by year, of the black experience in America - from the first records of Africans on the continent onwards. If you have more than a passing interest in Black Studies, then this is an enriching resource. The entries are dense with information and well-written enough to be compelling to the casual peruser.

Black Saga is a treasure.
Black Saga is a book I turn to constantly when doing research for my books. I imagine I would cherish this book even if I weren't a writer. It is intelligent, compelling, and so comprehensive. It should be in every home and in every school--wherever there are learners and lovers of history.

Black Saga is Excellent !
Black Saga is an excellent book to assist young people to become more productive, contributing adults. It is important for young people to learn and understand their complete history. As a teacher, I found this book to be an excellent reference source, and an important part of any history class.

New Latin Grammar

Old Standard
I'm surprised that this book is available in paperbook. I still have our hardcover edition from 1961. This book has simple charts covering EVERYTHING you need to look up to understand Latin. Bennett is the Best!

The best short latin grammar available!
This grammar has been around since the early 1900's( all the best latin grammars are of this time period or earlier) and it is as good today as when it was first issued. It is the best short latin grammar available. It will not show you all the nuances of the language, like Gildersleeve's or Greenough's , but it will give you the absolute basics that you need to know to learn this complex language. The explanations are concise and to the point; and the part on syntax is also nicely done. My only complaint is that this book only comes in a paperback edition. I wish the book was available in hardcover or clothbound. Reference works of this quality should always be available in such an edition.

A compact reference for intermediate students.
Charles Bennett's New Latin Grammar enjoys a new incarnation in paperback. The text follows a traditional format for Latin reference grammars: phonology, morphology, syntax and prosody. Coverage is descriptive, not historical, clearly designed to answer basic questions about forms and syntax for the student who needs more than an introductory learner's text but less than a 500 page tome, detailing every possible exception.

My own experience in using the book with intermediate students in school ( AP Vergil ) would suggest that there is some resistance to moving from beginners' texts, which are self-contained, to the use of a reference grammar because of the time needed to locate items in indices or tables of contents. Bennett's New Latin Grammar meets this problem of the time-pressed learner by its concision, only 250 pages of text, with a good general index to topics. Concision with accuracy is the key strength of this grammar, as Bennett himself stated in the Preface to First Edition: "The object of this book is to present the essential facts of Latin grammar in a direct and simple manner, and within the smallest compass consistent with scholarly standards." This goal has been met and should be helpful in developing the habit of reference grammar use among students who have completed formal grammar lessons but who, on their own, still need to dig out unusual forms or to address less common syntactical structures. Bennett's Grammar will help less experienced Latin students climb the ladder to becoming their own best teachers in matters of syntax.

Peak Performance: Mental Training Techniques of the World's Greatest Athletes

The One to Have
This book really is one the definitive discussions of mental training from the first chapter where Charles Garfield describes an actual experience with, and the remarkable results of, Soviet-style mental training. The exercises are generally excellent (although I found some of the exercises for planning to be a little bit difficult to follow). I believe that if you're serious about this subject, you have to read this book.

The Authoritative Work on Mental Training
This book is accessible and pertinent to anyone who wants to perform more consistently and effectively. While it focuses on sports, it has a number of useful lessons that can be applied to any aspect of life. The book sets up a program step by step that builds on a very solid foundation of research in both the U.S. and the former U.S.S.R. All of the information is, and will continue to be pertinant. A friend lent me his copy and I was overwhelmed.

Recall this book for publishing, it's a GEM!
The information in this book is excellent! I use it regularly with my hypnosis clients for sports and this author really did his research. His information is very valuable and easy to understand. I recommend it for any athlete who wants to take their sport to a higher level of performance

Volunteering: The Selfish Benefits: Achieve Deep-Down Satisfaction and Create That Desire in Others

An exceptional book
This is a wonderful book that reinforces what we already know: that it is our duty to help those less fortunate than us. The rewards are multiple, the joys of volunteerism are immense. I would recommend this book to anyone seeking to make a positive impact in the world in which they live. You dont have to be larger than life to perform minor miracles in the lives of those less fortunate.

For everyone who cares about this country.
This slender, easy-to-read softback explains "How To Achieve Deep-Down Satisfaction and Create That Desire in Other." The book is dedicate "to the individual and organizations that demonstrate daily what Americanism is all about." This book relates that self-help and individual action are qualities that made this country. They are also the qualities that will save it, Bennett believes.
"Our biggest challenge today is to discover and explore deep-down satisfaction. We must be properly grounded," the author says. We must learn to share; not be so self-centered Words on paper can start an idea but "it will always be the group meeting face-to-face that gets things done."
The idea, prevalent today in our materialistic society, is that if one donates money that is all that's necessary; that it solves problems. The solution to problems is the same as it's always been, this book says - people helping other people. You cannot become successful without sharing with others.
This is a most interesting book to read. First, it talks about "you." And everyone loves to hear about himself. But it also stresses "you" in conjunction with others. That is what makes the difference, Bennett says, in one's being happy and successful and satisfied..
Everyone who cares about this country should read this book and think on the propositions it sets forth. In the very beginning of the book, Robert W. Miller, President of the Freedoms Foundation, is quoted. He says, "America was built into the greatest country the world has ever known, not through government control, regulation and handouts, bot rather through individual imagination and initiative. It has been the individual and not government that built this nation, and it will be the individual that will save it for future generations."

A "Feast" for the Scholar and General Public Alike
A LAND SO REMOTE

Prior to the holidays, I received a great gift, a copy of the beautifully produced three-volume study A Land So Remote, authored by Larry Frank and Skip Miller, and published by Marianne and Michael O'Shaughnessy of Red Crane Books, Publishers, Santa Fe.
Creation of a successful publication of this magnitude can only be accomplished by many who work in concert, in this case scholar, editor, publisher and, of course, those who are willing to share their treasures with anyone wishing to turn the pages in this landmark study. Frank and Miller have devoted a large percentage of their lives carefully studying and painstakingly handling objects-some of religious importance, powerful images that were the subject of daily devotion, while other objects that served a useful function in the lives of hundreds of thousands attempting to make their lives easier. To the Hispanic, Native American, and the Anglo, these objects were an integral part of daily life-whether as an expression of their spirituality, their intense religious devotion-- or to enable them to perform certain physical tasks-- cutting wood or baking bread.
The authors, in concert with photographer Michael O'Shaughnessy, have treated each object sympathetically, whether it be a santo or bulto, or packsaddle or carreta wheels, with the same level of care, even reverence. The real joy is in seeing so many diverse objects fashioned out of wood and other materials in significant numbers. How often have we had the opportunity of examining page after page of images beautifully organized and described. The authors, of course, treat us to a display of work by lesser known santeros, as well as the most celebrated, notably José Rafael Aragon. Volume two devotes pages 288 to 377 to some of the most powerful religious images by Aragon and his followers that the reader will ever experience.
Since 1974, I have been a frequent visitor to New Mexico and have written a few books on the Anglo painters. After reading Miller's and Frank's essays, I said to myself, "I wish I had written these words. Both scholars write with conviction and authority. They also write in a style I have labeled "an easy read." They have organized their material so that it makes sense. You understand why the objects were created, who created them and importantly, how they were created. Happily, these objects, some still in the churches in Ranchos de Taos, Chimayo, Taos, and chapels throughout the Southwest, others in museums and private collections, have been "gathered" and presented to the reader and viewer in a beautiful and effective manner (I was tempted to use the phrase elegant but refrained).
All reviews of the publication praise A Land So Remote for its visual appeal, handsome photographs," fascinating account of the history and culture of Hispanic New Mexico," scholarship, a major contribution to Hispanic studies. One critic even suggested that, before being placed in a glass case [with other rare books], it might serve as a coffee table book. Never! If anything, it will be a banquet table book, and will be the scene of great feasts-visual and literary. But their words, like mine, fail to express the impact this handsome three-volume study will have on you-the participant. This study will, like the objects that it treats, transcends time. Secure your copy. I can assure you that it will never gather dust (although it will go out-of-print).

A TREASURE FOR COLLECTORS AND AFICIONADOS
Published by the vaunted Red Crane Books of Santa Fe, New Mexico, this three volume set on religious art and wooden artifacts of New Mexico is a rare, rich visual and intellectual repast. It would be a treasured gift, one to which collectors and aficionados will return time and again.

Larry Frank is remembered for "The New Kingdom of the Saints" (1997), while Skip Miller is curator and director, Taos Historic Museums.

With 842 stunning color photographs and 848 pages A Land so Remote surely holds the most comprehensive and accessible information on this subject. Many of the photos included are of rare objects gleaned from nine museums and a number of private collections. Carefully selected for the part each plays in this artistic corpus, photos are accompanied by concise essays that enhance knowledge while still piquing an interest to know more.

Volumes I and II beautifully present the growth of religious art during a period of over 125 years. It was a time when in order to undergird their faith Spanish settlers turned to santos, visual representations of saints. Thus was born an art form unique to America which once was of great import in churches, communities and homes.. Santos were, if you will, incarnations of the hopes and dreams of these immigrants.

"Rightly understood," author Frank remarks, "santos are a kind of 'liberation theology' written in the language of wood, plaster, and paint, an understanding of Christianity that empowers the poor to free themselves from unjust socioeconomic and cultural structures in the larger world and within themselves.

Volume III centers on wooden objects, such as tools, furniture, toys, and domestic utensils. These objects testify to the influence of the Spanish on the traditions of the indigenous inhabitants of this region.

Photographer Michael O'Shaughnessy described his task as a "...wonderful, often awesome, experience of having such close contact with material that radiates the love and importance that their makers brought to their creation."

Such is the case with readers as they leaf through the pages of these landmark volumes.

A "must-read" for high blood pressure patients on medicine.
You discover your blood pressure's high, and your MD puts you on pills. Now that your pressure is controlled you can relax a little, knowing the one or two pills a day reduce your cardiovascular risk, right? Control Your High Blood Pressure Without Drugs, by Cleaves M. Bennett, M.D. is your wake-up call. Dr. Bennett explains in non-technical language what blood pressure is, why we need it, and what exactly goes awry to drive it up and keep it elevated. After convincing the reader that high blood pressure must be controlled, Dr. Bennett reviews the usual treatment regimen most practitioners employ: lip service to non-drug methods and a prescription for one or more medications. Although Dr. Bennett concedes that drugs may be necessary as a holding measure, he takes a dim view of their long-term value, showing the reader how drugs merely set up a "tug-of-war" in the body between toxic chemicals and reactions to stress within the body which brought about elevated pressure in the first place. Claiming success in weaning hypertensives off their pills, Dr. Bennett argues persuasively for life style changes in diet(low-salt,low fat), exercise, and stress reduction. He educates, motivates, even graduates the reader from the same step-by-step course in blood pressure reduction offered at his clinic. Blood pressure medicine today is available and afforable enough, and with mild enough side effects, that it is difficult to motivate doctors and patients to follow Dr. Bennett's regime closely enough to obtain dramatic results. But it is worth the effort to try lowering blood pressure without drugs. Even if you still require pills to do the job, following Dr. Bennett's guidelines will enable you to get by on less medication, as well as give you the satisfaction that you're taking charge of your destiny. Cleaves Bennett's book is a "must-read" for everyone taking pills to lower blood pressure, especially those with mild to moderate levels.

The American Urban Design Classic
The most notable aspect of the 1909 Plan of Chicago was that the author's (Daniel Burnham) profession was not exclusively city planning. He was a business man. He viewed his plan for the City of Chicago as the best way to create an exceptional business and civic environment. It worked! Many elements of modern downtown Chicago that make it a truly great, world class city, are a direct result of Burnham's vision. For it is the grand vision that stirs the soul of mankind and allows a "planning document" -- normally a thick document, full of data, which sits on a shelf and collects dust -- to be embraced by an entire community. This is a must read for contemporary city planners, business men and government officials that want to "make it happen" in their communities. MAKE NO SMALL PLANS

Buy the Illustrated Guide to Snowboarding instead.
This book is decent, but the Illustrated Guide to Snowboarding is a much more in-depth and well written book. It is also more entertaining with funny drawings and tips. This book really only skims the surface on all the areas you need to start snowboarding.

Solid
I picked up this book hoping to add to my small bag of tricks. While definitely aimed at the beginner, there is enough solid info in here to help most any unsponsored rider improve their technique, even lucky locals such as yours truly (Tahoe is my backyard, Mount Rose my resort of choice).

The main thing I got out of this book was improving the mechanics of my turns, plus the inspiration to work on my ollies and 360's.

I do wish I had gotten my hands on this book earlier in my snowboarding career. Might have saved me from a few faceplants.

(no title)
This book is great for begginers and also explains advanced tricks and techniques like methods, spins, cliff drops, carving and explains a little about racing and competative snowboarding. It also gives you usefull info like what to eat before you go, warm-ups, getting on and off chairlifts, ect.
