The Rake's Widow
Beautiful young Lady Serena Whitlow had a very brief but violently bitter taste of men and marriage, the fourth Earl of Whitlow taught her how horrendous a husband could be-before his sudden demise delivered her from bondage to that handsome brute. Now Serena meant to stay free-even when the elegant Lord Peter Phillips chose her as his future bride...and even when Adrian, the dashing fifth Earl of Whitlow, proposed that he take his late cousin's place with her in the marriage bed. Serena might be single-minded-but her vow not to wed faced double danger as the two most attractive lords in London attacked her resolve with all the weapons of love at their command...

This was a fabulous book, well worth reading.

Should have been an episode!
This book, more than all the others save "Frozen Stiff", should have been adapted as an episode of the show. The plot, with Alex trapped into going to Paradise Valley Chemical and facing threats to her secret from all sides, rings most true to the pacing and style of the television series. Unlike several stories in the AM book series, this one keeps a sense of plausibilty through its plot, setting, and use of characters. For example, when Bobby, Vince, Danielle all start to converge on Alex and her powers, the characters come together slowly and convincingly, not just thrown into the ending as a plot device. The way Alex, Ray and Annie plan around Vince and Danielle's latest plot to catch the GC-161 kid is in the grand tradition of episodes such as "The Video Tape," and "Operation Breakout." An extra treat for the reader comes when Alex, Annie, and Ray takes him (albeit in written word) into the bowels of the plant's industrial section, an area never really shown on the show. All in all, a good Alex Mack tale.

Disappointing
Max Waring, who lost his fiance to his father, returns home after the wars. Max enlisted after this betrayal by his father. His ex-fiance, now his stepmother, the beautiful Felicity, invites him home to visit this father and new stepsister at the family home. Why would he go to visit these people? He goes but feels he must bring along his own fiance, Abigail Monroe, as a buffer for his feelings for Felicity and his father. Abigail is not really his fiance, just playing this role to get back an item that Max has possession of. Isn't this stretching it a bit? This book might make me give up reading Regencies for good. If your parent steals your fiance, would you be pleased at visiting their home and saying, hey, it's okay? No. This man, Max, went to war to get away from the situation and could have been killed! As a parent, to do that to your child, well, was pathetic and so wrong that how could it be forgotten. Almost as pathetic as the "romance" between silly Abigail and Max. This was poorly done. In fact, the book was poorly done and I usually like this author.

Scent or Scandel?
Twins always lead to twin trouble... and the twins in the Gold Scent bottle are no exception. A young man reaches his majority and gambles away money he does not posses, to make good his debt he gives a handsome army officer his sister's prized scent bottle... The determined young lady breaks into the gentleman's home and tries to get her bottle back, instead she falls headlong into a thickening plot of deceit and intrigue. The gentleman has the young girl pretend to be his fiancee at a house party given by his step-mother (AKA his former fiancee!) What ensues is a sweet and somewhat... implausible (but fun!) tumble deeper into lies and of course, love.

very enjoyable
I found this a very pleasant little read, easy to finish in an afternoon and written well enough that I found myself quite touched by the emotions between the main characters. Roly is a delight, also.

a very well written regency and with the touch of humor that ms. Mack inserts so subtly into her books.

Very disappointing; A page turner until ....
This book was so well written and captivated me from the beginning until Glenville's violence against his wife. It was so unexpected and appalling. As another reviewer pointed out, it was close to the end of the book and so out of character, I could not see what the author hoped to achieve. This novel was written in 1984 and I had hoped some of the demeaning acts against women in romance novels were long past. But not so in this case. What a shame - I've collected many Dorothy Mack novels and enjoyed them. I notice this was re-issued in 2001 as a double book. I wonder if the horrid scenes were re-written. I cannot recommend this one - I felt terrible when I was done with it and like the throw back novel it imitated, April our neglected, belittled and abused wife, fell madly into love with the woman hating, manipulative man who was NO gentleman at all. No less he was striving for criminal sentencing reform in Parliament -- Glenville was the one who needed transporting!

Horrible domestic violence
I was shocked by the domestic violence in this book. I've read dozens if not hundreds of Regencies, and I have never been so upset by a plot. The book is well-written, and the characters are well-developed. I got emotionally involved, so when "happily-ever-after" came just a few chapters after the violence, I was still seething on behalf of April. I read Regencies for fun and escape, not for real world brutality.

A most upsetting turnabout
In an act of the sweetest revenge against the man who had wronged her family Miss April Wendover forces Lord Adam Glendale into marriage, lest he be exposed to ruinous scandal. It had been a delicious victory to see this odiously arrogant lord wriggle like a fish on the hook before finally admitting defeat. As soon as he said yes, April was struck by the mocking gleam in Glenville's cold eyes-and then by a chilling realization. As soon as they were man and wife, Glenville would no longer be at her mercy, it will be Glendale who'll have the upper hand. She would be at his mercy and she could be sure that Glenville would have as little mercy as she...

I very much recommend this book to those who love the regency period. A wonderful read and a fine example of regency writing!
