A Sad King Doesn't Care Whose Heart He Breaks
David Guard's musical background shows in the angrily, bravely, happily and tragically dancing drawings and text of DEIRDRE: A CELTIC LEGEND. The former Kingston Trio member makes it clear why this story has gone through so many retellings: the skilled chess-playing daughter of Elva and storytelling harper Fedlimid macDall, Queen Deirdre returned from a seven-year exile so that her lover's murder with the other heroic sons of Uisnach would be opposed, witnessed and mourned; the old ways would not be forgotten; the people of Scotland would be safe from her husband, Red Branch Chief and Ulster High King Conchobar macNessa; and the suffering would end among her people in Ireland. I find it interesting that the author included understanding insects when talking about how much Deirdre knew: Annie Dillard says in PILGRIM AT TINKER CREEK that the key to figuring out life might be in understanding bugs. The beautifully simple book, along with the song "Deirdre" on the Beach Boy's "Sunflower/Surf's Up" album, can help readers tackle Randy Lee Eickhoff's THE RAID, THE FEAST, and THE SORROWS; Morgan Llywelyn's RED BRANCH; and the classic versions of DEIRDRE by James Stephens, John M. Synge, and William Butler Yeats.

Alexander Fadeyev is one of the best realistic writers
The Young Guard rests upon a fabric of true events culled from the life of an underground organization of Young Communist League members which was active in the town of Krasnodon during the German occupation. Forty-five young boys and girls were shot by the Nazis in the dungeons after excruciating torture. The title of Hero of the Soviet Union was posthumously conferred by the Soviet government upon the leaders of this valiant group, Oleg Koshevoi, Ulyana Gromova, Sergei Tulenin, Lyubov Shevtsova and Ivan Zemnukhov.

A wonderful look at early Hawaii
Hale-Mano, a young noble from Oahu, falls in love with a beautiful young woman who comes to him each night in his dreams. His sister Laenihi, an expert in magic and healing, tells him who his love is, and how he can win her. She is Kama, who is lives a secluded life on the big island, promised in marriage to either the king of Puna or the king of Hilo. Hale-Mano's quest for Kama's love takes him through learning to be a farmer, learning to be a chanter, and learning to please a wife. Kama is forced into a quest of her own, one in which she learns the importance of love.
This is a wonderful story, offering a unique window into early Hawaiian life and beliefs. Indeed, the book contains notes on pronouncing Hawaiian words, and a glossary of real Hawaiian words used in the text. I am a fan of Fantasy stories, especially those in exotic locations, and this book is as good as many that I have read. So, if you are interested in ancient Hawaii, or are a fan of stories filled with magic, then this book is for you.

True representation of feelings during Cultural Revolution
This is a required reading for a class I am currently taking in Chinese Society. The honesty of the individuals interviewed within the context of this book is unquestionable. They have shown in absolute honesty the situations faced and the losses encountered during this time of the "Up to the Mountains and Down to the Villages" movement. This book will change your views on chinese society and it people........
