Changing forms
Mr. Grossman's last novel should change our reading habits: despite its - at firts glance - strange and complex structure, it is a story about how we deny the right to the past to be more than a parallax effect. It engraves our so-called linearity in an ever-changing form, in order to open our eyes: the world is made of voices, and each voice creates its own world. To enter these worlds, one has to be stripped naked of all conventions. This is a great novel, for all those who read Vollmann, Danielewski, D. Cooper.

Amazing Piece Of Art
I bought this book when it was first published and never got around to reading it. After I read it, I was amazed and shocked by the intelligence it took to put this piece of art together. Thinking about it now, I am still in shock that someone could put something together so smart and so ingenious. Buy this book and stick with it!

Smart on a lot a levels
It's really great! It's really smart and compelling! It just make me want to lend it to all of my friends!!

The Alphabet Man

A completely different kind of thriller
"The Alphabet Man" is an excellent thriller set in the backstreets and political underworld of Washington D.C. Lot's of novels are though; what sets "The Alphabet Man" apart, however, is its unique style, brilliant language and disturbing exploration of the psyche. The novel presents itself as a manuscript written by the delusional protagonist. As he slips deeper and deeper into madness the voice changes to reflect his multiple personalities, and the layout and fonts become more and more bizarre. Thus, Grossman accomplished the feat of telling the story not only with words, but with images as well.

In fact, in many ways this novel looks and reads like a precursor to the incredible "House of Leaves" by Danielewski. Although not as good as that remarkable novel, it certainly belongs on the same shelf.

Ultimately, "The Alphabet Man" is a superb exploration of madness, and of perception versus reality. While some readers may find the unusual format tedious, a careful reading reveals a gripping, thoughtful story.

Brilliant experimental fiction
Those who believe Foster Wallace and Vollman are the only authors carrying forward the experimental mantle in American letters are well advised to obtain this novel from Richard Grossman. A manic portrait of psychosis, it is also a fascinating examination of the soul and a tour de force critique of American conciousness. It is complex and intellectual without being ostentatious. It is also so cutting edge that its diction and style precede the sword's razor in the air. Combined, The Alphabet Man is an extremely good read, along the lines of the best Wallace, Vollman, Gass, or Gaddis could offer. And that's just about the highest praise I could possibly offer.

Cuts and Chops it's Way Through Your Head
I found this book hard to get into, but by the time I was finished, I couldn't forget what I had read. It freaks you out, and makes you wonder about everyone (including yourself). An amazing piece of work by someone who continually surprises me.

A good idea, but not always successful
Richard Grossman's extensive (and extended) series of poems "The Animals" is perhaps the most famous of environmentalist poems. Using the figure of a shepherd to interact and speak with a couple of hundred different animals, Grossman attempts to find the common ground among all of the animals of the planet. Unfortunately, I found myself not being able to take many of these poems seriously, not least because of my intimate knowledge of Ogden Nash's animal poems, which are far funnier and wittier than even the best of Grossman's poems. But it's an ambitious project at that, and I can recognize and appreciate Grossman's sincerity. There is a remarkable awareness of each animal's individual behavior, even as it melds into a stylistic sameness that may or may not have the purpose of arguing that all life is of one equality. In short, if you love animals and are willing to put up with a certain amount of borderline New Age arguments, you'll enjoy "The Animals."

Genius book
"The Animals" is by the far the finest and most intelligent book of poetry I have read in the last twenty years. I cannot praise it enough for its power and spiritual depth. Before beginning reading I wondered how I was going to maintain my interest level through 500 poems, but I found myself riveted to each page! I was calling my friends on the Upper East Side and in Brooklyn in order to recite certain phrases over the telephone! A subtle and compelling narrative forms the underlying structure of the work, which could be described as an epic pastoral. The central protagonist is a shepherd who interacts and converses with his flock of hundreds of different animals. Almost every aspect of human (and animal) thought and experience is touched upon. Clearly, Grossman has outclassed his contemporaries in his masterful command of language, which he shapes and molds with astonishing simplicity and effortless grace. The reviewer of August 2, 2000, "Doc", obviously failed to understand or connect with the material. His review is typical of literary critics who are suddenly puzzled and confused when unexpectedly confronted with great art. "The Animals" is an absolute must for all serious lovers of poetry.

Confusing Examples
As a struggling calculus student (ended up in calc I three times and calc II four times) I found the book at times to be difficult to understand and the many of the example problems seemed to skip over some of the steps. The worst part of the book was the solutions manual, which often bore little, if any, difference from the answers in the back of the book and was therefore largely a waste of money. In some cases, the back of the book provided more detailed solutions than the solutions manual. I originally took the course at a major institute of higher learning. I repeated calculus at a community college that used a different book. The other book was about twenty bucks cheaper and provided better examples and solutions in the solutions manual. Granted I was a poor (as in not good) student when I was a freshman, but the other book seemed much better.

A good book for new learners
A good book, esp. for new learners. The author tried to invoke intuition all the time by treating the subject in issue in an unformal way. Simply examples are called upon to show the motivations. Strict definition and proof are given later to make the text complete. This is exactly what I would need if I were studying calculus for the first time.

Overall, The writing is clear and consistent, thus make it a good textbook for both classroom use and self-study purpose. However, given the approach the author used, this book is not suitable for quick reference for those who have already learned the subject and just wish to revive the knowledge.
