EXCELLENT!
I needed some information on one of the Secretaries of the Interior, and this book not only had an in-depth study of the man, but a bibliography to consult! What a great resource! James Francis Church Bayside, New York 17 February 1997

An Excellent Reference on Italian Battleships
References on Italian warships of World War 2 in English are rare and that's a shame, because many of the ships in the Italian navy were attractive, sleek and stylish, in keeping with the traditions of that nation. Some innovations of Italian naval architects include the introduction of the triple gun turret and ships with a higher speed than any other navy.

This book, which is intended as part of a series, is an excellent reference for naval historians and modeler alike. The history of all Italian battleships is covered, ranging from the Cavours to the Littorios (arguably the most attractive battleships around). Most of the photographs have not been seen in equivalent publications outside Italy, since these photos are from private collections. Photo reproduction quality is very good, since most of these negatives are well over fifty years old. Also useful for the modeler are illustrations of the various camouflage patterns worn by the battleships during their service and a set of color chips representing the paints used by the Italian Navy.

A must have for the naval enthusiast. Now when will the book on Italian cruiser be released? I have a bunch of Italian cruiser models in my closet waiting to be built and I sure would like Messers Grossman and Bagnasco to continue this series.

The Sighted Singer: Two Works on Poetry for Readers and Writers
Published in Hardcover by Johns Hopkins Univ Pr (1992)
Authors: Allen Grossman and Mark Halliday

A Tractatus for poetics
This is an unusual but wonderful book for writers. Imagine a slightly more mystical Wittgenstein retreated to Galway Ireland and returned with a manuscript on the subjet of poetry: The Sighted Singer could be that manuscript. One some level this analogy is entirely superficial: the numbered section and paragraph organization is a direct descendent of Wittgenstein's Tractatus. But the Sighted Singer shares much more with the Tractatus than that: poetic thinking so rigorous it becomes almost mystical, a ladder one must pull up after one has climbed up it.Whether the author's poetics are "right" or "true" is almost inconsequential. His propositions are so challenging and so thought-provoking that the mere experience of reading this book is valuable. If you are a writer or serious reader of poetry, this book will make you more serious about the task at hand in either endeavor.

Fact or Fiction ?
This book reads great like a fictional novel. Why ? Its sources are contradicted by many other books on the subject.

On second thought...
A reader from Bend, Oregon On second thought, after looking more closely at Grossman's work, I see what a marvelous and spectacular book it is. I will recommend it to all my friends as a fantastic source on the Persian Gulf War.

Excellent Handling of the War!
Dr. George Byrnes, University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee I am a professor of history, and I can say that this is one of the finest works on the Persian Gulf War I have come across. I read Harry Summers' "Persian Gulf War Encyclopedia," and while I was impressed with its handling of subjects, and giving a broad overview of the conflict, Grossman's war far exceeds Summers and then some. Grossman's work, without me being facetious, is fantastic. His knowledge of the subject, his use of biographical material not found every day, and his cross-references, as well as the major use of documents, graphs, tables, and other ephemera to describe the war and its history is just plain amazing. I was in awe of this work. And any amateur picking it up for the first time, just to get a primer on the subject, will find themselves in awe as well.

Its OK
This book is OK I guess. It sort of pushes you to believe in the death penalty though.

A reader from New York City
After re-reading this book, I now see what a terrific work it is. Please excuse my last review.

Quite an Interesting Work
I am an attorney who has dealt with death penalty cases in the past. And while I fight this with all of my heart, I found Mr. Grossman's work to be an unbiased and informative manual to the history of capital punishment. As someone who takes such a staunch position on this delicate question in our society, I can say that it is most pleasing to see someone give a factual, historical, and unbiased view towards capital punishment. I was most impressed by the writing, the sources, the timeline and comprehensive bibliography, and highly recommend this work to anyone who wishes to purchase it or spend the time just reading it. It is a marvelous edition to the collection of writings on capital punishment in our society.
