WOW - A well written book about business and medicine
I was amazed by the story line, the gripping tale, and the way in which Klasko wove his knowledge of both business and medicine into a compelling story. If Doctors don't get it after reading this book, they never will.

A reading must for hospital Board members!
Klasko and Shea take the complex issues of today's managed care environment and present it in a way that is understandable and fun to read. This book is a "must read" for anyone serving on hospital boards!

An engaging, thought provoking and entertaining book.
This book creatively combines science fiction and medicine (which are not as diametrically opposed as one might think). The authors have successfully explained the monumental changes that have occured in the health care industry over the past 15 years in an informative yet entertaining way. I found this book to be thought provoking, intriguing and extremely enjoyable. It really is a "must read" for anyone currently (or thinking about) working in health care. Drs. Klasko and Shea present a realistic and, thankfully, optimistic outlook on the evolution and future of health care. It is a remarkably well written book that will draw readers in and leave them wanting for more. Hopefully, a sequel is in the works!

Essential reading in oral tradition
A great book which changed the way we look at poetry produced by an oral tradition. Based on fieldwork by Milman Parry Lord shows the structure behind the improvisation and applies the theory to Serbo Croation epic tradition, Homer and French medieval poetry.

Essential to understand oral tradition
A groundbreaking book which redefined the way we look at oral tradition. Oral-formulaic theory developed on Milman Parry's fieldwork applied to Serbo-Croatian singing, Homeric poetry and medieval French epic. I used the book during research on scottish ballads. Now finally a second edition with a wonderful cd.

A classic among classics
Like many graduate students in Classical Studies, I had to read _The Singer of Tales_ in a course on Homeric poetry. What I found in it completely altered my understanding of Homer and of epic, and even today it's almost impossible for me to read the _Iliad_ and _Odyssey_ as anything other than oral poems. I did a research paper on another book edited by Albert Lord (_The Wedding of Smailagic Meho_), an epic sung by a Yugoslav Muslim and recorded by Parry in the 1930s. The similarities, both in plot and in formulaic style, between this epic and Homer's are unmistakable. I highly recommend this book; it's much more accessible than Parry's collected papers.

A well-written, must-read book
If you're a pilot or have ever dreamed of becoming one, you'll love this book! Greg Brown takes readers into the cockpit of his small plane and shares all the struggles, triumphs and the crazy adventures of a pilot from his novice days through today, with several decades of experience behind him. I found the book immensely readable. The language is simple and straightforward and the stories are broken down into short chapters, each a separate adventure, which is ideal if your reading time is limited. I also liked the variety of stories -- some were harrowing, some were downright hilarious and all of them made me wish I had been along for the ride. Finally, I found this book to be as much about relationships -- father-son, husband-wife, family and friends -- as it is about flying, which really balanced out the book for me. An enormously satisfying read!

Another Fantastic Greg Brown Aviation Book
A large portion of my life is spent with my nose in a book. I know a good one when I see it, and this is a good one. The moment I opened Flying Carpet: The Soul of an Airplane, I was hooked. Greg Brown's unique talent lies in showing us how airplanes are used in the enterprise of aviation adventure while allowing us to learn some important lessons about flying. As
you read, you¹ll find yourself buckled in with Greg and heading off to the shores of Lake Winnipeg to watch a solar eclipse or wrestling with ice on your wings or trying to outwit troublesome mountain waves. The adventures are plenty and education always present as you explore many wonderful places across the United States. Flying Carpet is a book for everyone. Pilots will be entertained and wiser for having read it. Those who don¹t fly will learn what it¹s like to share the wings of a skilled aviator.
Flying Carpet: The Soul of an Airplane captures the joy, enlightenment and adventure of flying an airplane. Each chapter is a ticket to share some of the extraordinary flying adventures that are the lifeblood of master flight instructor Greg Brown.
Beginning with his early development as a pilot, Greg reveals the important lessons that helped mold his ability to make sound aviation decisions. Sandwiched between these valuable lessons are stories about people. Some are pilots. Others simply enjoy and respect those who operate flying machines. As the novice becomes the journeyman and eventually the master, Greg reveals how relationships with people and airplanes ultimately
lead to greater wisdom.
No book about flying would be complete if it didn¹t reveal how the use of an airplane expands time and shrinks space, making the distant parts of our extraordinary country more accessible. Flying Carpet does this and much more. It¹s also the tale of a man who evolves to think with the mind of a pilot, question with the curiosity of a philosopher, and see with the eyes of a poet.
Buckle in with Greg Brown and head off to chase a solar eclipse or wrestle with ice on your wings or try to outwit troublesome mountain waves. Each chapter of Flying Carpet is a new ticket to extraordinary adventures that transform a pilot from novice to journeyman and eventually, skilled aviator.

If you ever wanted to fly, here's a reason why...
As a flight instructor, I know this book will be fun reading for every pilot and for those who dream about being pilots. Brown shares the thrills and chills of flying and, at the same time, makes us feel safe going along for the ride. Each chapter stands on its own: a combination of aerial adventure, self-discovery and pure joy. After you read this book, you'll want to invite Greg Brown over for a cup of coffee so he can regale you, in his easy-going, friendly manner, with more stories about the magic of flight.

Cormorant
Published in Paperback by St Martins Mass Market Paper (1988)
Author: Stephen Gregory
Amazon base price: $3.50

A chilling ghost story.
Gregory portrays the cormorant as a perfect blend of malevolence and mystery. Short but memorable, with an ending that is both haunting and surprising.

Atmospheric tale whose emotional impact will sneak up on you
Initially, I intended to criticize "The Cormorant" by Stephan Gregory for failing to be as compelling as I had expected a book touted as "Award-winning" to be. However, as I began writing this review, my opinion began to take another shape. Gregory does a masterful job of creating the landscape and atmosphere of the Wales countryside and the cozy cottage where the narrator and his wife take residence after the death of his uncle Ian. It is quite easy for the reader to become enveloped in the world the author has created: to cozy up to the fire and watch the pre-Christmas snow falling outside the slowly-fogging windows, all the while sensing the sulking, angry presence of the ugly joke, the cormorant, trapped in a cage in the back yard. Based on atmosphere alone, "The Cormorant" is a book whose images and emotions will linger in your mind. The ending of the story, the portion of the book with which I was going to find fault, is still unraveling itself in my mind. At first, I felt that the ending didn't create the kind of emotional impact that I felt the author had intended. I now believe that my feelings had more to do with the fact that I stayed up late reading and got little sleep, rather than any failings on the author's part. I feel a bit like a shock victim coming out of it: the emotions are rising up in me as I think back on the story, and plotlines that I felt were left unresolved are weaving themselves together. The sheer fact that a novel can leave this kind of lingering impression should be enough to recommend it. White Wolf publishing, under their Borealis line, has published a number of great books in recent years by authors who are not well know in the United States. After reading several of the titles published in this line, I now browse through bookstores in search of the Borealis imprint. Some other titles in the line include "The Immaculate" by Mark Morris, "Resume with Monsters" by William Browning Spencer, and "Virgins and Martyrs" by Simon Maginn. Check them out!!!

Compelling Drama
This is an excellent book, a very quick read. The authors do an outstanding job of capturing the South Texas Catholic culture as well as the personalities of all of the main characters. This story would make for great non-fiction, but it's completely true, the characters all real. Anyone interested in cattle barons, oil bidness, a little Catholic church history, and the modern day "Old West" should read this compelling work.

invaluable guide for teachers and students
Professor Graybosch and his co-authors have

done a tremendous service for all of us who teach for a living. It is hard to find anything negative to say about this book. All of the obvious structural and functional aspects of student writing are covered in detail.Common errors in philosophy student writing are also discussed.Dr. Graybosch gives some of the more obscure
errors as well some of the more common ones, like the use of first or second person.A valuable section on informal reasoning defines and describes all of the common logical fallacies. The book is written in plain language, and yet no stone has been left unturned.Especially useful is the chapter on "Citing Sources." Dr. Graybosch writes from a tremendous base of his own knowledge and experience..He has "seen it all" in student papers and he has given the rest of a pearl of great price. His book contains everything I have ever said to students about good writing, and more. This book is truly a "bible" of its genre. All future efforts along this line will be judged against this book.I cannot recommend this book highly enough.I wish this book was

available back in 1988 when I taught my first intro. class as a young Ph.D. student.I especially recommend the book to grad. student lecturers,ABDs,and part-time instructors.
