From E-Streams - May 2003
This book is the companion to Sittig's Handbook of Toxic and Hazardous Chemicals and Carcinogens, 4th edition. Hazardous chemicals listed in Sittig are the basis of this book. "This book is intended for chemists, toxicologists, laboratory technicians, manufacturers, safety professionals and government personnel involved in environmental and industrial safety and health matters."

The resource is divided into eight sections. Section 1 is the largest section and takes up half the book. You will find an alphabetical list of hazardous chemicals and their manufacturers names. It also lists the country of the manufacturer if not made in the U.S.

Section 2 (International Directory of Manufacturers of Hazardous Chemicals) is an alphabetical list by country of chemical names and their manufacturer. Each entry includes address, phone, fax, email, and website. It may also include parent company, subsidiaries/affiliates and stock listing.

Sections 3 (International Chemical Industry Organizations), Section 4 (Professional Environmental Health and Industrial Hygiene Organizations) and Section 5 (International Environmental Protection Agencies) are all organized alphabetically by country and list organization or agency name, address, phone, fax, email, and website. Some entries include a brief description of the organization. Only federal agencies are listed for the United Statesin Section 5.

Section 6 (State Environmental, Health and Occupational Safety Agencies) is organized by state or U.S. territory and includes agency name, address, phone, fax, email, and website.

Section 7 lists Hotlines, Databases, and Useful Web Sites. The hotlines appear to be U.S.and Canadian only. Hotline or database name, responsible organization, hotline number, email, website and organization descriptions are listed. Useful websites include those from .com, .edu, .org, and .gov websites. Many of the listed hotlines from federal agencies. Many database listings include contact phone numbers, which is a great feature.

Section 8 (Poison Control Centers) is organized by state and lists organization name, address, emergency phone number or hotline, and the area served. The book also includes an index.

This is an excellent resource. It is very easy to use and includes quality sources. It will serve as a nice jumping point for further research. This reviewer gives International Resources Guide to Hazardous Chemicals: Manufacturers, Agencies, Organizations, and Sources of Information an enthusiastic recommendation to all libraries concerned with environmental and chemical safety issues.

A wonderful collection of research-expository surveys
This volume contains expository introductions to some of the most exciting research areas in algebraic combinatorics. Although most of the articles began life as a lecture at MSRI, the authors have done much more than publish transcripts of their talks; they have produced carefully written articles that contain much information that they could not present during the severe time constraints of the original combinatorics seminar. Anyone interested in entering one of the fields touched upon in this volume would be hard-pressed to find a better way to get started than to study the relevant article in this book.

Since the articles were written there have of course been advances; I will just mention that a number of Jim Propp's matchings problems have been solved, and that Mark Haiman has proved the n! conjecture.

Contents: Matroid bundles (L. Anderson); Combinatorial representation theory (H. Barcelo, A. Ram); An algorithmic theory of lattice points in polyhedra (A. Barvinok, J. E. Pommersheim); Some algebraic properties of the Schechtman-Varchenko bilinear forms (G. Denham, P. Hanlon); Combinatorial differential topology and geometry (R. Forman); Macdonald polynomials and geometry (M. Haiman); Enumeration of matchings: problems and progress (J. Propp); The generalized Baues problem (V. Reiner); Littlewoord-Richardson semigroups (A. Zelevinsky).

No need to be a music lover or a physicist.
I do not include music or physics among my interests, yet I enjoyed MOW. The book really makes you think about the way things are (or appear to be). Since this book is about a musician, and you do read it as opposed to listening to it, the author wonderfully conveys the essence and the power of music. For this alone this book is a must read. After reading of one of the concerts in the book, I was left absolutley floored as the narrative was that powerful. This was the first KSR book I have read. I was very impressed with the connection the author made with me. KSR uniquely addresses the reader at various points throughout the book and that added to my reading experience. Some of the physics theory really slowed me down as I struggled to understand as much as I could. All in all a very engaging and thought provoking work.

A surprising book of an obvious mix
Having read a lot of KSR it was very refreshing to read Memory of Whiteness. The reason for 4 stars is the beautiful description of the combination of music and 10 dimensional superstring theory. Once you read it, it becomes obvious that it must be so. What I miss is the realistic touch that KSR masters so well in both the Mars triology and the Orange County triology. You really belive those, but MOW is a bit more far fetched. All in all a very good Sci-fi which I enjoyed a lot.

One word DEPTH.
I would consider this one of the all around best works of modern fiction. The depth and breadth of the worked that Robinson creates is truly a wonder. Few writers can successfully juggle the complex ideas contained within this book and still present a coherent story.

When I started this novel I feared that the level of music theory and physics was going to overshadow the story and make for a dry and boring read. By the end of the third chapter I realized that I was hopelessly hooked and couldn't put the book down. This was not due to an attachment to characters but rather an involvement in the world that I have rarely felt.

Let's just hope that no one gets the bad idea to try and make a movie.

Excellent highly focused source of information
This is an excellent reference. Its best feature is that all ( or most ) chemical synonyms. including tradenames, for a specific substance are listed alphabetically. This usually lets you find a substance in one attempt.
