Goodbye Green Recommended for Journalists
Duncan sets an historical account of the environmental movement in the context of grassroots involvement primarily in one of the hotbeds of national environmental and political controversy - the chemical corridor of South Louisiana. From the twin perspectives of researcher and environmental news reporter, Duncan provides a colorful expose' of agenda-setting and resource co-opting by national environmental groups including Greenpeace, the Audubon Society and the Sierra Club. Duncan's work is important in two ways: first, in documenting the disintegration of grassroots interest and involvement in the environmental movement per se, and secondly, in providing another piece of evidence to evolving theories of collective action. Reminiscent of movement analyses of the 1960s and 70s, Duncan's work focuses on the fatal flaw of large scale movement-building: changes in the purpose and message that inspire grassroots involvement, and eventually, corruption and even abandonment of the "cause" in favor of a quest for resources and manpower simply to keep organizations alive. The inevitable theft of power from the ordinary citizen by competing environmental oligarchies signals a brief rise in momentum followed by the death of the grassroots movement. As such, Duncan's work is in good company - falling squarely into the camp of such notables as Piven and Cloward (Poor People's Movements, 1979) and Doug McAdam (Freedom Summer, 1988). As an updated account of the often treacherous ground of mass movements, collective opinion and environmental journalism, the book is recommended for students of political science and mass communication.

provocative insights
Anyone interested preserving our environment (or using it responsibly) will be interested in the provocative book. Although I do not always agree with Duncan's take on the extremist environmental movement, he is clearly a brilliant journalist who is not afraid to tell it like it is. The author reveals some little-known facts about the political machine behind our nation's largest environmental groups. This book is sure to ignite some heated debates about the next steps we need to take to preserve our planet. This is not just another book about environmentalism. Duncan has taken it upon himself to shake out the rugs at green organizations across the country, and I must say he has done an excellent job.

An important message
This book provides a provocative inside view of the extremist environmental movement, and the many unseen factors that make it tick. Anyone interested in protecting our environment (or our right to use it responsibly) will definitely be interested in reading this book, which contains much never-before-released information about the politics behind the environmental movement. The author is clearly a journalist with high values who dares to tell it like it is. Although I do not always agree with Duncan, I feel sure that the controversy created by his well-researched book will bring about many important, proactive discussions.

Action Books Are Worth Acting On!
If you look at all of Debbe Kennedy's writing, there is at least one thread connecting all her thoughts: talk is nice, but action -- making something really happen -- is the only path to achievement.

What's great, then, about this "Strategic Action Series" is that, page after page, Kennedy suggests, profiles, highlights, or lists things you can do to move diversity from the discussion table to the office suite or plant floor.

The series is a perfect blend of philosophy, reporting, and move-on-it-now lists. Thus, when completed, the series not only helps you see diversity in a new light; these books also help you think about your own potential for converting diversity into actions with both a personal and organizational payoff.

No excuses to stop you following your dream
An easy read-not too daunting-compact in size and condensed information which doesn't allow the reader any excuse for procrastination. Encourages everyone to follow their dream and take 'Action' as the title suggests. Loved the quote from Mother Theresa...."Don't wait for leaders. Do it alone-person to person"

A beautiful, mystical story of adventure and love
The main male charachter has reason to leave civilization and travels far into South American jungles, meets with native tribes, and finds one which takes him in. They all seem happy with him until his curiosity gets the best of him, and he goes to a 'forbiden forest' so feared by this tribe he becomes ostricised for having been there.

In the second part of this book he befriends a mysterious girl who lives in the forest and seems more farie than human. He finds himself doing things for her which he would have never thought he would do for another person.

This is a clasic love story, intriguing, beautiful, and tragic. This was one of my first introductions to the classics of lliterature, and prompted me to find and read more of classic literature which has greatly enriched the scope of my reading experiences.

I've been haunted by this book since I was twelve.
I read the Classic Comic version of this book many times when I was a kid. I've only now just read the original and found it's haunting beauty lingered in my mind for the last 2 weeks. The description of Abels mental travails at the end of the book is a particularly memorable and inspired.

This book touches my life every day!
My mother having read this book sometime before I was born in the 50's, was so moved that she named me after Rima. When I was 12 I read it for the first time, and after moving many times the book was lost. I have always wanted to re-read it as an adult feeling that there was quite a bit more I would appreciate now. I am delighted to have located this novel, and will be thrilled not to have to explain to my friends once more where my name originated. I will just loan them the book!

Leave the Grave Green (Wheeler Large Print Book Series (Paper))
Published in Paperback by Wheeler Pub (2000)
Author: Deborah Crombie
Amazon base price: $23.95
Used price: $4.98
Average review score:

The green grave bogged down....
While this story began with an interesting murder, the middle 3/5 of the book dragged on and on. No clues to where Kincaid was heading, just endless discussions of clothes, tea sets, pub food....I really thought it would never end. Not my favorite of hers...the third I have read.

What happened
She had me hooked before the end of the first chapter. Great style and character development. That is for the first 3/4 of the book. The last 1/4 must have been written by a 13 year old without very much talent.

An engrossing police procedural in the British tradition.
Deborah Crombie's work is not up to the level of Ruth Rendell's or Elizabeth George's, but she is a talented writer in the British tradition of police procedurals. In Crombie's novel, "Leave the Grave Green," Inspector Duncan Kincaid and Sergeant Gemma James investigate the murder of a young man named Connor Swann, who drowned under mysterious circumstances. Both Kincaid and James are divorced and afraid of relationships, and Crombie explores the tentative nature of their mutual attraction very nicely. The murder investigation is engrossing; it plays out interestingly and realistically. Crombie depicts her characters with a sharp understanding of human nature and, in her own quiet way, she delivers a murder mystery that satisfies. I love Inspector Kincaid and Sergeant James. They are marvelous characters who are vulnerable working people struggling to make a place for themselves both professionally and personally. I am looking forward to more books featuring Duncan Kincaid and Gemma James.

This book stinks
Of the roughly 15 certification study guides (for various certifications) that I read over the last 4 months, this one is by far the worst!! This book reads like it was written by a committee and then not edited at all. The organization is atrocious, the book is riddled with typographical, grammatical and technical errors - several per page - and the technial information presented that is needed to pass the exam is incomplete. For example, the tables that list the specifications for the different SCSI standards is simply incomplete. Also, this book is a perfect example of why sophisticated desktop publishing tools do not belong in the hands of amateurs: the book is over-designed to the point that the layout and design in many places is very distracting. After having taken the exam, I seriously doubt that I could have passed it if I would have relied on this book alone.

Do yourself a favor and find another book.
This book is poorly organized and redundant. The book just seems to babble on and on going over the same misinformation. The organization of the book is horrible, and the visual appeal of the book is simply non-existent.

I think the book gives only cursory information regarding the Operating System aspects of the test. If you don't know the basics of Netware, Windows and Linux, you aren't going to learn them with this book. If you don't know the hardware aspect, the book contains a great deal of information, but it would help if that information were organized and accurate. I think I'm pretty forgiving when it comes to Certification books, but this one was pretty bad. If the Exam Cram had been available when I purchased this, I would have never bought this one. As it is, I wasted $50.

The practice exams provided on the CD seem to be a bit more accurate and usable than the text, but the CD is hardly worth the price paid for this book. If your method of study is to sit and run through practice tests over and over I guess this book might actually work for you. It's a typical CompTIA exam, so it's not very difficult at all, but I don't think book is going to help anyone prepare, it didn't do much of anything for me.

Provides the info you need
This book, while not perfect, does provide the information you need to pass the Server+ exams. Server+, unlike the A+, is a tough exam- you really need to be looking at a couple of resources, AND have hands-on experience.

Mostly Useless
Don't kill any trees by bothering to buy this book. In fact, don't waste any brain cells by trying to read it either. When I bought this book I was looking for some sensible ways to reduce my impact on the environment as I was finishing my basement. I had already read about easy energy saving measures like better insulation and fluorescent lighting and was looking for a little more in depth knowledge. I certainly didn't get it here. The author advocates wood burning stoves and construction, without taking into consideration the durability and recyclability of other materials and the destruction to forests caused by clearcutting. He does not seem to understand that environmental problems have different solutions in England than they do in California. Worse yet, on several occasions he is just plain wrong. On page 104, while describing photovoltaic cells, he says that "the negative electrons are activated." I was forced to assume that the author was a total flake and that the Union of Concerned Scientists had failed to read this book when they recommended it in their otherwise excellent book, "The consumer's guide to effective environmental choices." Though there is some good information in this book, if you can filter it out from the useless junk, you don't need to read it, and if you can't, get a better book and skip the misinformation in this one.

Basic introduction
Jane Smiths review seemed a bit biased. I will agree that this book has different illustrated different approaches in england than in CA. But then again CA at times seems to think they are a different country than the entire US. It seems she didn't review the book for what it was rather than her own personal agenda.

This book can be used to get a basic overview of what it means to take a sustainable approach. THe Author limited its scope to dealing with remedies for existing houses and didn't not focus on new development. Its target audience seemed to be the average Joe.

The author does not get to specific on remedies but at least touches on all of the major issues providing an outline for further research or a guide to know what to look out for.

I would recomend this book to anyone with no backround or understanding of sustainable building looking for an good introduction.
