A Testament to Excellence
About 20 years ago, I read an older translation of this biography. Then, as now, a reader cannot help but be impressed by the thorough and meticulous scholarship that went into its preparation. Because of its size and scope (900+ pages), it may be somewhat daunting to new readers who may be just now encountering Bonhoeffer. However, given the nature of his literary output (Bonheoffer was still a young man when he died, and many of his ideas exist only in limited or underdeveloped forms), this in-depth look at the man and his motivations by the individual who probably knew him best is essential to an informed understanding of his work. For Bonhoeffer admirers, it doesn't get any better than this.

A classic -- Bethge is indispensable
Eberhard Bethge was Dietrich Bonhoeffer's closest friend and the lifelong editor and interpreter of his life and writings. For the first time we now have the completely unabridged biography in a revised and updated English translation. This is not only a classic of twentieth century biography; it also addresses key issues not only of German and European history, World War II, and the Holocaust but also, through Bonhoeffer's theology, the church and modernity. It sharply poses the question of authentic Christian life. A big book and a challenging read!

Now I know Bonhoeffer
In this work, Bonhoeffer's student and friend brought me closer to Bonhoeffer than I thought possible. Previously, I had thought Letters and Papers From Prison was as close as I could get to understanding the "religionless" Christian -I was wrong. Bethge's opus gives an incisive look into the formation of Bonhoeffer the man and the theologian which sheds more light on his Christian fortitude in the Nazi tempest. I whole-heartedly recommend this work for it has been an inspiration to me as a human being as well as a student of theology

great
I discovered Bonhoeffer after a short remark by my pastor and suddenly a new world was opened to me.

It was great. I loved his style and this edition with all of the notes and notes on the notes and notes on the editions etc.

The book discusses the importance of the church community and how it is essential for christians and as the author put, "A christian who stays away from the assembly is a contradiction in terms."

I chose to read this book first because i had wanted to read "The Cost of Discipleship" but i wanted to go in order as this handsome series publishes them. I am halfway through Act and Being and hope soon that i can start the book that i set out to read in the first place. However, i know i can say now that i am not disapointed in the journey.

Very enjoyable and thought provoking
This a beautifully written book that in many ways reminds me of the writing of Gabriel Garcia Marquez. The story unfolds in part through the author's experiences and in part through the entertainingly gossipy banter of the villagers - - I really enjoyed trying to figure out what was fact and what was fantasy, not only while reading the story, but in thinking about afterwards as well. I am definitely looking forward to reading Ms. Albues' other books and hope to see them translated into English before too long.

Wonderful!!
This was the first time reading something by Tereza Albues and I was not very familiar with the genre -- a friend recommended the book to me. I found the story to very charming and actually laughed out loud a few times at the antics of some of her characters. What made the book even more endearing to me was when I found out that some of the characters in the book are based up on people she knew in her childhood. I recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a great story teller and lively, amusing characters.

Magical and Mystical
In the spirit of Latin American literary works, Pedra Canga brings together mysticism, magic and the constant struggle for good versus evil. We share the uncertainty of the author as she investigates the truth behind the majestic, abandoned house belonging to the Vergares family. Throughout her quest, we are introduced to the many colorful characters that make up this small town in Brazil. Beautifully written, Pedra Canga is a very enjoyable novel that will leave an impression on all tho read it.

Wonderful Depiction of Religious Movements in the U.S.
In this book, Guth explores a realm of American politics usually left untouched: the religious movements. The first quarter of the book is devoted to presenting a brief history of religious movements in the U.S. from early American history to the present. This is done concisely but masterfully. He spends the rest of the book presenting the findings of a case study on a number of American religious denominations and their individual political movements. The research done on this is superb and presents a very accurate (though unexpected) picture of religious movements in politics today. I commend Dr. Guth on a job well done. Anyone at all interested in studying the effects religious groups, from the liberal leftist groups of the 60s and 70s to the new Christian Right should read this book. If only someone would now study Catholic movements in American politics in the same depth, we would have an almost complete picture of the role Christians have played (and continue to p! lay) in politics today.

Bravo to Guth!!!
James L. Guth strikes again with a poignant, informed, yet readable study of the politics of the Protestant clergy. Readers will marvel at Guth's pure genius in deducing the ins and outs of Protestant political history, movements, and regimes. You won't be able to put it down--I read the entire text, some 200-odd pages, in just one sitting. Guth has produced a definitive volume which will set the standard in his field for years to come. Bravo to James L. Guth!

Theology in Fiction
This Book goes hand in hand with Bonhoeffer's Letters and Papers from Prison. It consists of a few acts of a play dealing with a young intellectual man, as well as some chapters from a novel dealing with a family on a retreat. We see Bonhoeffers focus on the power struggle in theology in the form of two boys striving for power in a schoolyard, as well as many different aspects of German Bourgiouse Culture in a very easy to understand manner. It is truly a shame that these fictional works could not be finished before Bonhoeffer's death. Throughout the book we can see Bonhoeffer's theology and autobiography play through in the characters, though at times it is near impossible to figure which character relates to the author himself. However, it prooves very fun, and opens up insight to understand Letters and Papers from Prison. It is clearly a must have for anyone who truly desires to capture Bonhoeffers mind. Displaying insight into Bonhoeffers family background, lifestyle, and watching thoughts of death break through in the brief parts of the play we are shown.

Karl Barth : theologian of freedom

An accessible Barth
Clifford Greeen's introductory essay and comments on the selected texts set Barth in his historical context, chart the development of his thought, and indicate the significance of his theology in the development of Christian theology as a whole. Extensive coverage is also given to Barth's public theology, including such topics as civil community, communism, and nuclear war. It is an excellent introduction to a theologian whose vision is arguably broader than anyone since Aquinas.

One sidded trash.
This book is a very one sidded view of negative news paper and other articles collected that sheds only a bad light on this breed of dog. This type of "journalism" is very dangerous.

wasted trees
Eh gads! I hope these people really dont consider themselves authors after this!

Just a laundry list of bad news
All this book contains are abbreviated and one sided news reports on incidents involving pit bulls. There is no author, no opinion, no photogaphs and no real substance to this book. It seems to have been created to just be a collection of dry straight forward abstracts and can only be viewed as a reference for that. Absolutely uninteresting.
