Concise text with high quality pictures.
I bought this pocket book atlas when I was a junior medical student 3 years ago in a Book Exhibition. It has joined my "illustrative books collection" since that time. Illustrations explain better than texts, and you tend to remember the diseases quickly.

Features of this pocket book include:

- It covers wide range of infectious diseases compared to its size.

- User-friendly format.

- The text is on the left side of the page, where each disease is dealth with according to its etiology, incidence, pathogenesis, clinical features, complications, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention.

- High-quality color clinical pictures on the right side of the page. These pictures include microscopic (histopathology) pictures, macroscopic specimens, electron microscopy, imaging (e.g. x-rays, CT), diagrams (e.g. hepatitis antigens), and clinical bed-side pictures.

- Contents include:
Classical infectious diseases of childhood [Measles, Rubella, Congenital rubella syndrome (CRS), Mumps, Erythema infectiousum, and Chickenpox], Herpez zoster (shingles), Herpez simplex infections, Kawasaki (mucucutaneous lymph node) syndrome, Lyme disease, Orf, Herpangina, Hand foot and mouth disease, Infectious mononucleosis, Toxoplasmosis, Cytomegalovirus, Viral hepatitis, Leptospirosis, Staphyloccocal infection, Osteomyelitis, Infections with Streptococcus pyogenes, Scarlet fever, Anthrax, Diphtheria, Tetanus, Enteric (Typhoid and paratyphoid) fevers, Infantile gastroenteritis, Pseudomembranous colitis, Meningococcal infections, Bacterial meningitis (non-meningococcal), Viral meningitis, Tuberculosis, Pertussis, Acute croup and bronchiolitis, Community-acquired pneumonia, Legionnaire's disease, Lung abscess, Erythema nodosum, Stevens-Jonson syndrome, Antibiotic rashes, Syphilis, Gonococcaemia, Acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS), and Index.

- It can be used for quick revision among medical students as well as residents.

- This pocket book is in its 2nd edition (1999), published by Churchill Livingstone company, and comes in 125 pages.

All in all, this pocket book is recommended for high-yield revision.

An excellent brief military history of the Civil War.
Hattaway's Shades of Blue and Gray is an excellent introduction to the military history of the Civil War. While brief enough for the amateur historian to enjoy, this book is also suitable for scholars and features many valuable insights into the period. Hattaway adequately explains many of the complicated and technical aspects of the war in a way other works have failed to do. Shades of Blue and Gray gets to the heart of the military science involved in the war, and relates the Civil War to the world-wide development of modern warfare. This book is also excellent for anyone interested in Confederate General Stephen D. Lee, one of Hattaway's specialties. For anyone interested in the way the war was fought, this book is a must.

An excellent overview of the American Civil War.
Prof. Hattaway, a student of T. Harry Williams of LSU, has the most eloquent and clear style of writing that the concepts that he communicates are very easily understood. Having had Prof. Hattaway for Am. Hist. in college, I must say that his writing technique is truly genuine--he acts and reacts precisely in the way that he presents himself in the work. The work itself gives a very broad overview of the Civil War with enough detail to surpass elementary study but in moderation enough to keep easily distracted readers from finding it laborious. I highly recommend Prof. Hattaway and his works.

Terrific Biography
This was a well written biography on a forgotten soldier who is just getting his due. Highly recommend this fine historical study of Confederate division commander in action!

AN UNKNOWN HERO OF THE SOUTH
Robert Rodes finally gets the biography he has deserved for years. In James Swisher's fine book the casual Civil War buff will be introduced to one of Robert E. Lee's best Division commanders. Historians have stayed away from a book on Rodes because of a perceived lack of information, but Swisher's passion for fellow Lynchburg, Virginia resident Rodes gave him the patience to unearth much undiscovered material on his subject. Like all Civil War Generals, Rodes had his good days (Chancellorsville, Wilderness, Spotsylvania) and his bad days (Gettysburg), but his superb leadership and bravery put him in high esteem with both his men and his superiors. Many felt there was no better commander in the Army of Northern Virginia. Because Rodes was killed at 3rd Winchester in September of 1864, and because many of his principle subordinates were killed during the war there was no one to write his book. James Swisher's biography of Rodes, besides being a great work of scholarship, is highly readable. Swisher has a great writers gift of taking cold facts and making his subject come to life...warts and all. This is a long overdue biography that every Civil War student will want to read. Many good maps and photographs. I recommend it highly!

Going to Antietam ? Then make sure you have this with you !!
This book is a "must have" for anyone who visits the Antietam National Battlefield. It has it all (for a tour of the field). Maps and analysis of the day's events. It also has the auto tour so you can understand what happened at each auto stop you make on the tour. It tells you where you are and what took place there. In each of these sections it even gives you quotes from those who survived the horrific fighting that took place on that fateful day on September 17, 1862. If your going to Antietam for the first time, or have been there a few times this is "THE" tour book to have with you. You can't go wrong, and at this price it's a steal.

3rd Louisiana Infantry, 9th Louisiana Infantry.
The four Pierson sons, intelligent, and well-educated for their time, originally opposed secession but served their country whole-heartedly in all theaters when the War came.
The letters of three sons are contained here, preserving valuable insights not only of battles and camp life but also frank opinions of the behavior of high officers and politicians. The tenacity of the Piersons, through sickness and wounds and hunger, in a War they didn't welcome, is fine testimony to the courage and patriotism of the Condederate soldier.

Great Choice
As a long time visiter to the Owens Valley I found this book to be excellent. Its great for the first time traveler or the person who has been to the valley many times. Its section on side roads is good for those passing through the area and wanting to explore a bit. The history and geology areas are current and answer those questions that arise when encountering the vast numbers of different geological features. While no one guide does it all this book comes close. A great book for those who want a general guide to the valley, its history, geology, flora and fauna.

Why Our Drug Laws Have Failed and What We Can Do About It: A Judicial Indictment of the War on Drugs
Published in Hardcover by Temple Univ Press (2001)

Triumphant, debate-ending tour-de-force
Judge Gray says what all opponents of the drug war have been saying all along, and he lends his succinct style and honorable status to the fight against drug prohibition. The arguments are well-known and do not bear repeating here, and it suffices to say that the book is written in a straight-forward, professional manner, explaining in detail each point of the argument and anticipating most semi-intelligent responses.

Our Drug War is a miserable failure. Judge Gray has recognized that and is stepping up to the plate; the rest of us should follow suit. This book is excellent material to bolster your arguments against drug prohibition, arguments that will be the basis for decriminalization of many controlled substances, hopefully within the next decade. Judge Gray's book is filled with undeniable logic and speaks to both our empathy and rationality.

For those of you not yet convinced by what you feel are shaky arguments against drug statutes, read this book and see the light, so to speak. The entire DEA should read this book and start looking for jobs that are not wasteful and immoral. We can only hope there will be no demand for such job positions in the near future.

Thoroughly researched; highly readable; strongly recommended
Judge James P. Gray makes a compelling case for massive retooling of our nation's costly approach and attempts to confront drug use and abuse. This highly recommended, thought-provoking book is sure to stimulate discussion--not only for those readers who desire serious reevaluation of our current War on Drugs, but also among those who believe our present efforts should be continued and expanded.

I never pass out books to others in an unsolicted fashion, but for this book and this critical, national issue, I am making an exception: I'm ordering extra copies to send to adult and adolescent family and friends, as well as legislators--with a heartfelt request that recipients please consider using some of their valuable time to read it and revisit the issues contained inside.

War on Civil Rights
Judge Gray's book is an well written, thought provoking examination of our nation's current drug policy. Judge Gray not only explains how the war on drugs has failed to curb drug use, but also how it has inflicted severe damage on the rights of citizens of this nation whether or not they use illegal drugs. A must read for anyone who wishes to take his or her head out of the sand regarding this important issue of the day.

I'm re-reading P.D. James, and loving it!
I've been re-reading P.D. James this summer, more or less in sequence, a project that I highly recommend. "An Unsuitable Job for a Woman" is number five, and the first of two to feature a protaganist other than Adam Dalgleish. Instead, we're introduced to private detective Cordilia Grey, a plucky and determined young heroine, in her first solo case. The story is impecably plotted, told with a sure hand, not without its humor, psychologically credible -- a pleasure to read.

There are certain themes (e.g., the inability to love) and preoccupations (e.g., an interest in architecture) that recur throughout the P.D. James series, as is apparent when you read a bunch of them over a short period of time. Though her later novels are longer and more elaborate, I also admire the more straightforward, meticulously crafted early works. Rereading the series is a great summer project!

An introduction to P.I. Cordelia Gray
This is a reprint of a novel copyrighted in 1977. It predates Sue Grafton's novels about P.I. Kinsey Millhone, and introduces London P.I. Cordelia Gray, a young woman with a family background even more unusual than Kinsey's. Having grown up in foster homes and a Catholic boarding school, at the age of 16 she began traveling through Europe with her father's band of left-wing revolutionaries. Finally settling in London, a job with a temp agency took her to the office of P.I. Bernie Pryde. She is now 22, and had become an associate of Pryde, inheriting the business on his death.

This is Cordelia's first independent case. She has been hired to investigate the apparent suicide of a prominent scientist's only son. The case takes some unexpected twists and turns, and she finds herself in danger before the case winds down to a conclusion. At the end, she meets Chief Inspector Dalgliesh, the main character of other novels by the author.

The monetary amounts mentioned (i.e., five pounds a day plus expenses) may seem strange to U.S. readers, even taking into account the 1972 time frame, but one must keep in mind that things were cheaper than they are today and that pay standards in the U.K. have always been less than in the U.S. - one reason for immigration (the old World War II complaint about U.S. servicemen was "overpaid, oversexed, and over here")

The sequel to this novel is "The Skull Beneath the Skin." Sue Grafton's fans should enjoy these novels.

Cordelia proves detecting is NOT "unsuitable for a woman"
~ - ~
P.D. James at her best! Fans of Inspector Dalgliesh, and those new to P.D. James will both enjoy this. Dalgliesh appears very briefly on the fringes of the story. The heroine is a likeable, determined, very human young woman, who isn't going to be swayed by the popular opinion that being a detective is "an unsuitable job for a woman".
~ -~
Cordelia Gray has just inherited full ownership of a detective agency on the brink of bankruptcy. Their main assets now are a gun and Cordelia's determination. She gets caught up in the investigation of a young man's suicide, and won't let go despite danger to herself.
~ - ~
The solution to the mystery was quite a surprise. (Being such a mystery fan, many books are now transparent) As always-, James has a clever, unexpected solution, and a dramatically satisfying ending.
If you've heard of P.D.James - this is a great mystery to jump into! James fans- Don't miss it!

A poet's ear!
Great book! This book, Blues for Bird, is worth all the other biographies of Charlie Parker combined. A concise and direct evocation of the jazzman's life, it tells the tragic story of his rise and fall, and the tragic decline of his later years--it censors nothing, it tells the story better than a more detailed biographical volume, And does it with a poet's ear and eye! Alright! Be-bop!

Accessible poetry
Somebody ought to make a bunch of CDs, with an actor reading these highly accessible poems against a backdrop of Charlie Parker's music. They'd be a wow!

Epic/anti-epic
How can you write an epic today when the world is no longer 'story-shaped'? You can go back and translate 'Beowulf', as Seamus Heaney has done, or you can be like Martin Gray and write an epic life in quantum bursts of three-stress energy.

Good book with someone familiar with C++ programming syntax.
This book can be a good addition to your C++ library. But, you will need a good C++ programming book which explains contents of this book in more details. This book does have good examples but what good are the examples if they are not explained very well.

I recommend getting:

The C++ Programming Language Special Edition
by Bjarne Stroustrup with this book.

Makes mastering c++ easy
With so many c++ books on the market, not one explains c++ the way programmers like to lean. At least until now. I found this book a well worth addition to my library. You lookup the functionality you want, then look at a fully working - short - program showing how to code the functionality. Best of all the authors use callouts to describe every aspect of the syntax. I really like the programmer's notebook style.

A quick way to learn C++
I read many books while trying to learn c++ and I found the C++ programmer's notebook one of the best on the market. There are hundreds of little programs with each having callouts that point to syntax and tell you what's happening. You don't have to read pages and pages of text to understand how to use c++. This book gives you c++ programs in a "picture" like way. More book should be written this way.
