Foreign Born African Americans . . .
An invaluable collection of empirical testimonies!

Silenced Voices
It is great to finally hear the silenced voices of the foreign born African Americans. These voices became loud and clear in this unique work of Obiakor and Grant. It is healthy when the tongue ceases to be docile. Hopefully, this will be the beginning of many good things to come and more and more silenced voices will snap out of docility. This is the beauty of America!

Love him or not, this book is a must read for MN sports fans
Sid's book is a fantastic ride through Minnesota sports history. I picked up the book a true Sid Hartman sceptic. Come on, does he really know all these people? I won't give it all away, but Sid is the real-deal Minnesota sports fan. A true Minnesota legend. The many tales of Bud Grant, the Gophers, the Vikings, the Millers, his role in the Minneapolis Lakers, the Twins, and yes, Bob Knight keep you both entertained and laughing from start to finish. Read this book and you will know a true hometown fan. I only wish Sid liked hockey a little more. Love him or not, this book is a must read for any Minnesota sports fan, and makes a great gift to those no longer living in Minnesota, like me. Thanks Demps! Another must read for Twins fans is "Calvin: The Last Dinosaur," author unknown.

Grant Writing : Strategies for Developing Winning Proposals
Published in Paperback by Patrick W. Miller and Associates (01 July, 2000)
Author: Patrick W. Miller
Amazon base price: $39.95
Average review score:

Grant Writing Strategies
Miller's second edition systematically covers the entire competitive grant writing process from identifying funding sources to the planning that organizations must undertake before making applications to the writing of actual proposals to following up after submissions. He goes beyond the mechanics in each section, providing advice as to key factors to be considered at each stage of the process.

Numerous exhibits will help the reader, particularly the new grant writer, in planning and preparing applications. For example, a planning chapter includes exhibits that advise how to structure requests for information from funding sources and how to obtain copies of previous winning proposals. Other chapters provide numerous samples and explanations of the various parts of a grant proposal, with an entire chapter devoted to budget preparation.

The authur includes a glossary, list of additional resources, and exercises with each chapter. The exercise solutions illustrate good planning practices and model proposal outlines, cover letters, and proposals. Individuals responsible for grant writing may find this a good text for workshops held for administrators and professionals within their organizations.

Excellent Resource
Grant writing is both a science and an art. It requires attention to detail as well as an intuitive grasp of what the grantor is looking for. I believe that Miller's "Grant Writing, Strategies for Developing Winning Proposals" does an excellent job of addressing both these characteristics.

There are a number of outstanding characteristics in this book. I found the highlighted material in each chapter to be extremely helpful. The material highlighted in these "exhibits" constitutes the major steps the grant writer must take in order to write a winning grant. It is a step by step walk through the essence of sucessful grant writing. Another aspect of the book I found helpful were the review questions at the end of each chapter. There questions served to provide a review of the basic knowledge necessary in writing grants. Finally, the recommended exercises at the end of each chapter provide an opportunity to the reader to practice the skills identified in the chapter.

"Grant Writing,Strategies for Developing Winning Proposals" is informative and hands-on, a unique combination that makes for an extremely valuable resource for grant writers.

A "must-have" resource for the novice grant writer
Now in a substantially revised and thoroughly updated second edition, Grant Writing: Strategies For Developing Winning Proposals by Patrick W. Miller (a national grant reviewer and panel leader for the United States Department of Education) is an superbly presented, comprehensive, highly accessible resource for crafting eye-catching, professional-quality grant applications. Individual chapters address how to quickly and efficiently gather the necessary information, writing and editing concise and persuasive text, properly preparing a budget, what should be done after the submission is made, and much more. Especially recommended for the non-specialist general reader, Grant Writing's eight chapters of clear methods for developing grant applications is enhanced with 75 illustrations and examples, 130 review questions designed to stimulate mastering the information, 13 exercises on proposal writing and budget development, 95 quick reference glossary terms, and contemporary resources (including web sites). This is a "must-have" resource for the novice grant writer as well as being an invaluable continuing reference work for even the more experienced grant writing applicant.

Give Me Liberty: The Uncompromising Statesmanship of Patrick Henry (Leaders in Action Series)

The Cheering Section
In his biography of Partick Henry, Vaughan complains that previous biographers were unfair to the legendary statesman. Thus, he moves to correct this historical error by bringing forth a laundry list of glowing facts about Henry. While Vaughan does have a point about previous renderings of Henry's life, he does little to paint a more accurate picture of the orator. Rather, he glosses over Henry flaws, and presents us with a candy-coated version of the man. And Henry was a man--a good man, but a man nonetheless. Unfortunately, this biography fails to recognize that.

A Delightful Read
What a delightful read this book has been. The author displays a clear and deep admiration for his subject, but I find no fault in that. The book reads very easily without a lot of stilted verbiage, making it a wonderful introduction of the great orator to the student.

There is not a lot of detailed analysis here, but I don't believe that was the authors' intention. This work is meant to be an outline and introduction Henry, the Trumpet of the Revolution.

The work is actually presented as three separate volumes in one binding. Part 1 takes the reader from birth to death, touching on the momentous occasions, as well as a good bit of reference to the details of life which shaped the life of Henry. Part 2 gives Henry's views of some of life's virtues, such as Christianity, patriotism and duty and gives an insightful look at the character of this great American. Part 3 concludes with how Henry has been remembered by history, and how he should be remembered.

Overall, a delightful read which I highly recommend to students or anyone wishing to gain a basic insight to a great American patriot.

A "MUST READ" FOR LOVERS OF LIBERTY
It was wonderful to see Patrick Henry's Christian values and belief on the LORD JESUS CHRIST openly written about. I enjoyed it completely and would recommend it to any who enjoy studying the Revolutionary War. BUY IT!

Cases in Contemporary Strategy Analysis
Published in Paperback by Blackwell Publishers (2003)

Amazon base price: $44.95
Average review score:

Nice work by Grant and Neupert
I use Cases in Contemporary Strategy Analysis in my Capstone course (final course) for my MBA graduate students. It provides them with excellent insight into corporate decision making and strategic planning processes. The case studies are interesting and rich for discussion. My only criticism is the world of business is so fast paced. I would have like to see an internet site or CD ROM with more current information on the companies. Many of the organizational case studies were dated 1998. A myriad of financial, economic, marketing, and strategic changes occurred since the printing of the text. Overall, I recommend the book for textbook use.

As backwards as they come
Far from being a progressive Bull Moose, Patrick J. Buchannan is as conservative as they come.

He and his supporters were the ones who in 1992 caused my party to retake the white house because of the excesively hard line on social issues at the Houston TX national GOP convention. Because Bush Sr.'s campaign was so afraid of ailenating the religious conservative powerbase, they essentially let this group declare open season on anybody who did not fit into the traditional mold. of the ideal American.

Furthermore, Roosevelt supported women's suffrage. Judging by his retrograde concepts of women's work (no, having your sister as a campaign manager does not make you a liberated man)Buchannan also does not care about the needs of women voters. Buchannan has openly denounced the concept of abortion, birth control and the equal rights amendment because they violate his relgious beliefs---without even stoping to think how somebody else may view those things.

Buchannan's inability to realize the neccesity of a global market also renders him obsolte to the modern American system of government and politics. Because of technological advances, the question is no longer going to be "Do we have to work with people of different countries?", but rather "When are we going to work with people from different countries."

Finally a book that understands Patrick Buchanan and Co.
George Grant's work is remarkable. Finally there is a book on the shelves that understands Pat Buchanan and seeks to explain why he thinks the way he does and what it can mean for our nation. Since his amazing runs of 1992, 1996, and 2000, people have been quick on the trigger to criticize this potential Teddy Roosevelt of our time. Grant's work is an excellent one about the ever condemned, but never refuted Patrick J. Buchanan.

Our NEXT President!
It was a great book, a must read! It was a very insightful look at the man who will be the next President of the United States! All citizens of voting age should read this before the election. It was a great show at his views and why he believes the things he does. GO PAT GO!

Good, but has flaws
This book is a nice overview of some deep-sky objects, but has a number of flaws. Overall, I would say you should consider it as supplemental material only, not a primary reference. This is unfortunate, as a more thorough job of handling this topic would be extremely useful.

First, like most (if not all) books in this series, there is no index. This makes it difficult to try and cross-reference information on an object to other books or charts. I fail to understand why a book of this type would not have an index, as with modern word-processing software, they are easy to generate.

Second, at the beginning of each month, there is no table of objects giving catalog number, common name, constellation names and coordinates, as I would have expected. There is only a list of catalog numbers. The finder charts are skimpy, also.

Potential buyer's should be aware that almost half the book (first 108 pages out of 248)is introductory material on such topics as binoculars, telescopes, how to observe, etc. This material, while good (although all aperture sizes are metric, with no translation to inches), is not why I wanted the book. The sketches are nice, as it is always helpful to me to see eyepiece impressions, as opposed to photos.

Given the price, I would recommend one of the 2 volumes of the Night-Sky Observer's Guide as being a better use of the money, but as supplemental material, it may be useful.

Instrument Flying Refresher (The Thomasson-Grant Aviation Library)

This book did not focus on reviewing IFR flying.
I was disappointed in this book especially since the title contained the word "Refresher". Instead of the book focusing on IFR flying and new techniques, the book turned out to be a collection of short stories and dialog about IFR flying as told by the author.

For a better "refresher" on IFR flying, I would recommend "Instrument Flying" (4th edition) by Richard L. Taylor, which is better orgainized, and does give tips on the art of instrument flying.

IFR or IFR
I bought this book to use as an IFR refresher without really looking into the content. When I actually got around to reading the book, I was at first disappointed because I had expected a technical review of the hands on techniques for IFR flight.

After reading the first chapter I got the point. Apart from the pretty good read and interesting actual examples, I realized that one of the most important aspects to IFR flight is good pilot judgement.

Poor judgement is what kills most pilots (and passengers) and IFR flight is a most risky activity. Not that technical skill is not important, it is. But pilot judgement skills are often neglected and under appreciated.

The book is well written and the accounts of both personal flights (from two different perspectives) and industry accidents are very instructive and interesting.

Highly recommended for those wanting to go beyond the basic skills. This book is not for new IFR students. I am recommending this book to my experienced students.
