Tesla's time at Colorado Springs is THE critical period in his life. In his Notebook, we have Tesla in his own words, shifting effortlessly between startlingly original technical suppositions and his characteristic cosmic imaginings. His occasional lapses into reverie, particularly in regards to the fantastic lightning displays in Colorado-both man-made and naturally occurring, hint at the visionary's relationship with electricity on a level far beyond the technical. An inventor by trade, Tesla reveals a passionate fixation with his medium that makes his work personal. In his autobiography, Tesla mentions that as a child he was tortured by continuous lightning-like, prismatic displays whenever he closed his eyes. Later in life, Tesla would raise the shades in his Manhattan office only during lightning storms, at which point he would ask any others to leave, recline on a couch and, according to his trusted secretary, discourse out loud with himself. Perhaps his project was a Proustian one, relishing the real world display of what was once his childhood affliction. In any case, the Colorado Notebooks hint at much and reveal little. Simply, the man was a mystery and he will ever remain so.

This is an excellent resource for those who wish to study about Tesla's experiments. The notes are highly detailed, and clearly show his attempts at transmitting electricity without wires by means of his magnifying transmitter. I also find it a very good insight into the inventor's mind.

For those studying Tesla and his methods, the technical notes are very rewarding, although the casual reader might have some difficulty with the text.

I personally find this book as one of my most valuable resources on Nikola Tesla. It is his diary of day to day events and thoughts during 2 years of research in Colorado Springs (1899-1900). As you read and study this book, it becomes absolute clear Nikola Tesla was a genius with the heart and mind of a pure engineer/inventor/scientist. This book is given my highest recommendation for all who dare to study the experiments Tesla was working on during the turn of the century.

I am always looking for new and interesting books on Nikola Tesla. When I first saw this book advertised, I knew I had to have it. I couldn't wait to read it and when it arrived, I was not disappointed! This is a very well written book with some excellent interviews with some of the top investigators in the field today. It really makes you think to consider that early UFO sightings, especially in the 19th century, were manmade aircraft built by a secret "club" of scientists and engineers.

My favorite parts were the chapters that dealt with the theory that this secret group bravely attempted SPACEFLIGHT as early as 1903 with the help of Nikola Tesla. You have to read it for yourself. Another excellent book from the same publisher who brought us THE LOST JOURNALS OF NIKOLA - a book that I also highly recommend you have in your collection.

A STRANGE AND FASCINATING WORK THAT WILL KEEP YOU ON HE EDGE OF YOUR SEAT! Here is a book that answers a lot of questions about UFOs; strange phenomenon on the moon and on Mars; as well as the mysterious "air ship" flap of l897. The author is a hard-core UFO researcher well worth his investigative salt, and so it is a plus that he finally come out and away from his "conservative approach" and expand his thinking beyond the idea that all UFOs and "aliens" must be of extraterrestrial origin. ... Later, the author contends, Tesla may have joined a secret feternal order who had already mastered the art of flying before the Wright Brothers ever took off from Kitty Hawk. It could well be that Tesla was approached by members of this secret society to assist them in their plans to "conquer" space. There is evidence among the witness testomonials from the many sightings of the period from l890-l903 that the mysterious air ships seen around the U.S> and Canada were not some advance fleet from outer space, but a utilization of a certain type of technology that may have, indeed, been around since ancient times. Supposedly, Tesla was so thrilled with the idea of communicating with Mars that he offered his full assistance in perfecting anti-gravity and free energy travel to the stars, long before the Russians put a dog into space, and before NASA was formed. Furthermore, Casteel interviews several authorities who say there is ample reason to believe that Hitler somehow got ahold of some of Tesla's "high flying" pattents and tried to go to the moon himself. There are some that maintain that he was successful and that goons from the New World order have already established bases on distant cosmic shores. Its high speculation at its very best, but very well reasoned and thought out. Fans of Tesla will want to dig into the pages of this well written book and establish their own theories and beliefs as to Tesla's secret contribution to the history of flight. It could be that the history books will have to be rewritten some day!

Too many treatments of the lanthanides ends up with lists of data or a main focus on spin mulitiplisities and terms. I'm not sure how many there are that understands the last topic, and can apply it to anything. This book take a broader and more coherent view of the chemistry of the f-group. Many parts are eminent. And the only I could wish more of would a be some few extra sentences about the molecule orbitals in the actinide complexes, ...just to make it even smoother to read.

Scott and Kaltsoyannis have done a really fine job of preparing an entry-level textbook which deals with the chemistry of the lanthanide and actinide elements. It is written at a level suitable for advanced undergraduate and upward, and the authors are to be commended for their clear and concise explanations of some difficult concepts. This is a highly readable text that should be recommended to anyone wishing to obtain an overall picture of the physical and chemical trends within this often-neglected group of elements.

Great book! Whenever my son enters a new classroom, the hearing impaired teacher reads this book to the class so that they can better understand what a hearing aid is and why my son needs it. I highly recommend it for siblings of children who wear hearing aids as well.

This is a must for any hearing impaired child under the age of 7. My daughter brings it to school and daycare and her teachers and providers use it as teaching tool to show the other children what being hearing impaired is all about.

A fascinating account of the aftermath of the Decembrist uprising in 1825 and the major role taken by Mariya Volkonskaya in creating a livable environment for the families of the exiled rebels. I was impressed by the way in which these aristocrats, led by Mariya and several other wives, adjusted to a harsh climate and inhumane treatment and managed to not only survive but to build their own effective little society. The book will also be of interest to those interested in womens' contributions to 19th century life.

An extraordinary, well researched book about the life of 24 year old Princess Maria Volkonsky nee Raevsky who followed her husband Prince Sergei Volkonsky who was banished by the Tsar after the Decembrist uprising into exile in Siberia. The Decembrists were a group of intellectual Russian Aristocrats who wanted to banish serfdom. It was called the 'First Russian Revolution' . I wonder what would have happened if it had succeeded? The second revolution would have not happened, I think? A fantastic book written with care.

This book explains Mr. Bearden's electromagnetic theories based on Tesla's research and work. It's pretty much straight-forward to follow with minimal mathmatical skills. If you are researching into Tesla's work GET THIS! Even if you are conservative to the point of disregarding Mr. Bearden's EM theory, get it for the copies of magazine articles and newspapers of the time. It's very worth it!

THIS BOOK BY MR. BEARDEN IS AN EXCELLENT SOURCE OF TECHNICAL MATERIAL ON TESLA'S SECRET RESEARCH THAT IS NOT FOUND IN ANY OTHER ACCESSIBLE KNOWN SOURCE. THE MATERIAL USES SOME ELECTROMAGNETIC THEORY BUT SHOULD BE EASY TO FOLLOW IF YOU HAVE HAD AN ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING COURSE OR TWO. HOWEVER, EVEN THIS SHOULD NOT PREVENT THE GENERAL READER FROM ENJOYING THE NONTECHNICAL MATERIAL CONCERNING TESLA. IT EVEN HAS SOME OLD NEWSPRINT AND MAGAZINE ARTICLES ON TESLA'S VARIOUS INVENTION ANNOUNCEMENTS

What a wonderful, versatile book. I teach a 4-year old Pre-K class and I originally chose this book because it focuses on the fact that while people may all be different from each other physically, we can all enjoy each other's company. I have a very mixed class racially, and it is always a priority of mine to have available literature who's illustrations portray a range of races, especially books that do not specifically deal with a race's holiday or special event. I want to draw attention to the fact that we do not only see non-white, non-"typical" children only at certain times of the year. When I got the book out from the library and began reading it, I discovered that it was also enjoyable to read and listen to. It's writing has a very rhythmic, sing-song quality that appeals to my students. The art work is a mix of watercolor and colored pencil, and depicts people of all races and ages playing together at a park. My children regularly pick this book out of the book area and ask that I read it to them, and as they hear it more and more they begin to speak parts along with me. What a joy it is to have a book that really reaches out to my children that strongly. I have just added the book to my wish list so that I can have a copy for myself, and hope that my own children enjoy it as much as I do so I continue to have a reason to read it at home as well as at school.

The series are pretty tongue-in-cheek and some are better than others - this is the best I've come across. Written with a dry (brut?) sense of humour (that's humor for you north americans) there's actually a whole lot of really interesting stuff in here. From the correct way to pronounce Moët & Chandon (not what you think) to the truth about Marie-Antoinette's breast and the coupe shaped glass, it's all in here. Highly recommended.

I work in a Nursery School and the children get pretty antsy around Halloween. This one kept them all quiet and focusing on
the book. They LOVED it- I had to reread it again, and the other classes in our school had me come into their classes and read this story.

Very imaginative and all the words rhyme!! I love books that have a beat and the words rhyme like this.

Fantastic book for ALL ages. I am a teacher of middle school students and I read this book to them, as well as my son's 1st grade class, AS WELL as a 1st grade class in the school at which I teach, AS WELL as my 3 year old son (many times to him I might add!!) They all loved it! It has a fantastic rhythm as well as references to favorite fairy tale characters.

This book is a halloween treat! I've read it over and over to my 19 month old who absolutly loves this book! The pictures are bright and silly, but most of all its a lot of fun to read! Other family members and friends have read it to her as well and they love the book as much as us! The words are in a sing-songy rhythm - you cant help but bounce around as you read this! I would (and have) recomended this book to everyone I know!

The reporting of Tesla's life is biased to report the good, and gloss over the errors. Despite this, it is still a very good book, a great insight to a great inventor. The comparison of methods with Edison is interesting. Tesla's ideas were all his, and Edison use lots more experimentation. According to the book. Treat with an once of salt. Still excellent material though.

Here is a story of a man born in the glorious womb of science, a man who so completely understood the laws of nature and the scientific method that he commanded total dominion over the physical universe.

Once you read this book you will find it difficult to name an aspect of modern life that hasn't been affected by the hand of Nikola Tesla.

Some of Tesla's ideas were so far ahead of his time that to the people of his day, they were considered impossible; his vision of the world of the future was mocked and laughed at even by other scientists. Over time scepticism about the possibilities of science and technology has waned. Unfortunately for us the world was not yet ready for Tesla, this man out of time, and he died with his greatest achievments alive only in his mind.

I read this book in April 1945, just after it first appeared. A fantastically inspiring book for me, then a 14-year-old would-be genius. It nourished me intellectually and emotionally for five years -- until I outgrew it. The author was science editor for the New York Herald Tribune, but like so many Tesla enthusiasts today, was uncritical of Tesla's theoretical ideas, neither recasting them in today's language of physics, nor criticizing them where they are clearly wrong (or wrong-headed). Still, it's a book scientifically-oriented folks should read.
