The Funniest Book Ever!
If They Mated is one of my favorite skits on Late Night with Conan O'Brien, so I just had to buy this book. I am glad I did, it is one of the funniest books I've ever read. Even if you never saw the show before, or this skit, I highly recommend getting this book, I guaranty you'll laugh! I would have rated it a 5 but the pictures in the book are grayscale, color would have been much better, but it is still a great book.

He's very funny
The book is funny with hilarious pictures and commentaary. In my opinion Conan O'Brien is the best show between the hours of 12:30 AM and 1:30 AM on nbc.

A Must Have For Any Conan O'Brien Fan
This is definately a must have for any Conan O'Brien fan. Late Night with Conan O'Brien is simply the best show ever. Conan O'Brien is the funniest man alive and he along with the Late Night writers have only shown that with this hillarious book. I can't wait until In the Year 2000 comes out. Conan O'Brien is truly a genius when it comes to truly hysterical, unique and orginal comedy, I give this book Five Stars. Read over and over again.

This book delivers on it's promises
Some problems remain in human society whether we have solutions to them or not. As examples, drug-addiction and obesity are still problems for many people, despite the solutions already available to treat drug-addiction or reduce obesity.

The authors of "Know How" belong to a popular field of psychology called "NLP". Some NLP books overstate the value of the book in teaching you the method the book describes. But the authors of "Know How" teach you working methods to improve problem areas in your life. And are those methods always successful? No, but they're good.

"Know How" contains stories of people who succeed or fail in particular areas of their life. The stories illustrate how personal behavior makes the difference in our lives. The stories are simple to follow, so you can check if your life is similar to a character's in a story.

I don't think reading "Know How" is a sure help for anything. But the book teaches you successful behaviors for relating well, eating well, exercising consistently, parenting well, and drinking cautiously. "Know How" provides practical and jargon-free advice to the ordinary person.

Good, perhaps dated?
A good book.

Perhaps a little dated, look at more recent offerings from the authors and Richard Bandler.

Very stepwise structured approach to self development.

Take a look at the book "Solutions" by same authors ... also very good, to do with relationships.

know How: Guided Programs for Inventing Your Own Best Future
This book is a must read for any person who wants straight forward advise and workable applications on how to improve some specific, but commonly human self destructive patterns of behavior. Even for thoses rare few, who have no such self destructive traits, the book shows how to master life.

More Context Needed
With a book of this nature, it's hard separating an evaluation of the book from an evaluation of the technology itself -- so I won't try too hard. Yes, the book showed certain evidence of haste in editing and proofing but the errors and weaknesses are not of the type to cause an early adopter to stumble. For instance, there is no index but chapters are distinct enough so that it is easy to find the broad categories.

I eagerly picked up this book after attending a very impressive demo of Curl's capacities. Only skimming the two chapters on Object Oriented Programming, I concentrated on the other chapters most relevant to GUI developers of Web-based applications.

Being an ardent practitioner of the W3C's Cascading Style Sheets technology, I was a bit disappointed in Curl's implementation of styles, which seems clumsy and very limited, even considering the differences in syntax. The authors were very knowledgeable on HTML and CSS issues -- which made their reliance on tables for layout a bit disturbing. Does this indicate that Curl lacks equivalents for CSS positioning and layout properties -- or merely that the authors did not happen to see this as important enough to include in examples?

I was dissatisfied with the paucity of examples and the fact that these examples were not of the type of depth to glue the various parts of Curl together. There were some good examples involving 2-D and 3-D graphics which showed the technology to advantage. However, if your primary interest is in form-based Web applications, the examples were sketchy.

The book really needs to have context. Criticism of Java, HTML, JavaScript, etc. is not enough.
The authors must speak more directly to the questions:
{}Does the Web world need another proprietary, Java-like browser plug-in?
{}Does the Curl organization have what it takes to go against Microsoft's .NET, which has a similar architecture and revenue model?

Answer these questions and you not only have a good book, but a real cool winning tool.

Good book with a few warts
Curl is an important new client-side web language that permits you to create web applications that have the same rich interactive power of local applications (Word, Excel) while reducing the complexity that arises from using multiple existing web languages.

This is currently the BEST Curl book on the market. Ok, it's currently the ONLY Curl book on the market, which makes it Good News/Bad News.

Good News: This book does a great job of providing Curl information and "how to" examples in more depth than the Curl manuals. All the major topics are covered, which makes this a good overall reference book. The graphics architecture section is particularly helpful, where the authors describe the overall graphics framework of Curl. This info would save any new user time when learning Curl.

Bad News: by targeting the early adopter, the book is timely, but shows some warts. Some sections still show and describe the last beta version of Curl. The last beta was mostly similar to the current version of Curl, but the small differences are occasionally distracting. The book also has a number of typos and the class descriptions in one table were copied directly from the (free) Curl manual. As most of the authors are from Curl Corporation, this is not plagiarism, but it is not new information either.

Overall, this book serves its purpose by being the first overall book on Curl. The book itself is a great way to learn Curl in conjunction with the Curl manuals. Despite its warts, it is well worth owning.

[Bruce Mount worked as one of the Technical Reviewers for this book. No, he didn't review the section with typos. :-)]

Technology that may never take off
If you have never been to curls website and looked at this new web technology, you do not know what you are missing. In some ways, you can think of Curl as Flash on steroids, although you can do much more than the eye candy Macromedia is known for.

They call this book an early adopter book, but, since I think Curl is most likely going to go the way of Microsoft Agent, it is more a Bleeding Edge book. Unlike Microsoft Agent, however, I do think this technology is very useful.

So, what is Curl? Curl is a new OO technology for web UI development. In many ways, it is what Java promised, with applets, in its early days. The main difference here is Curl is designed to create dynamic, awe inspiring presentations (ala Flash) without a lot of work (once you learn the language, that is).

The book deals with Curl primarily as a UI development language. Through the chapters you will learn to work with 2d and 3d environments, multimedia and even dynamic client interaction. As with all Wrox books, there are plenty of code examples (all downloadable from the Wrox site).

I really love this book, although I wonder if the technology will ever really take off (Curl engine download is huge if you have a dialup).

I consider myself (as do others) to be a well read individual that understands new concepts quickly. How can you possibly get through this book without wanting to physically harm yourself or verbally abuse the authors for subjecting you to such verbose caca mess. Leslie, babe, let's model the acroynm KISS (Keep It Simple, Stupid) and then write a book. Great gift for that special someone who has WAY TOO MUCH TIME ON THEIR HANDS!

Book for (very advanced) modellers - a toughie!
A very technical book, fascinating but not for the faint hearted - this is modelling the academic way. The book leads you through the seven types of variables necessary to elicit each 'stage' of behaviour and a behaviour may have many stages. It requires a dedicated approach to learning all this new elicitation methods and really guts you out in the last few pages. Why? Because after showing you how to elicit modelling variables which, admittedly is quite exciting, it tells you that there is not enough room left to talk in depth about installation of behaviours - and suggests another book - Know How! (which by, the way doesn't explain itself that clearly either). If you know the basic TOTE method this is a good book to cannabalise elicitation questions from - otherwise it requires more dedication than I am prepared to give it.

A fascinating, one-of-a-kind book
This book is great.

I recommend it if you have the commitment already in place to learn about what other people do. "The Emprint Method" can teach you what to ask people about what they do. The book won't teach you how to read minds, but it will teach you to ask particular questions. The answers to those questions teach you how and why another person performs the activity you want to learn how to do yourself.

Even better, the method taught in "The Emprint Method" relies on ordinary communication and observation to help you learn about what another person does. If you apply the Emprint Method, you can volunteer what kinds of questions you will ask the person you want to model before you begin modeling that person. The Emprint method modeling process will still work.

I think the authors of "The Emprint Method" didn't sacrifice their knowledge to produce this book. Instead, the authors communicated what they know about modeling human behavior in a principled and thorough manner. "The Emprint Method" is worth buying.
