Boosting Boasting
Jaimy Gordon's fiction has always raced ahead on the power of her coruscating style--the nonstop humor (even in the midst of tragedy or horror) runs on her brilliant wordplay and her ability to create distinctive voices with whom the reader instantly feels familiar and, if not comfortable, at least engaged. In _Bogeywoman_, the teenaged Ursie immediately establishes the nervous rhythms of her narrative, filled with slang and neologisms, and leads us into the world of a young woman who knows herself so well that she knows first how little she understands of herself--but even more, she convinces us that none of the adults who presume to teach/treat/discipline her can know anything important about her--with the possible exception of Dr. Zuk, the best (or most mysterious) of the "dreambox mechanics" she encounters. While there are some other writers with whom Gordon's work could be compared, comparisons would be beside the point--read this book because you will be moved and amused and glad to have the chance to get to know Ursie.

Dersu the Trapper (Recovered Classics)
Published in Hardcover by Small Press Distribution (1996)
Authors: V.K. Arseniev, Malcolm Burr, Jaimy Gordon, V. K. Arsenev, and V. K. Arsen'ev
Amazon base price: $25.00
Average review score:

It is a book bespeaking of love towards nature.
Through knowledge based on survival interest, but also on in-depth curiosity, Arseniev offers a narrative monument of love towards nature. His true friendship with Dersu Uzala, the native trapper, opens to us the misteries of the Taiga, and the harmonic rules of nature, on which the role of man has also a place. The style is narrative, straight forward, without artificiality, a little cold, but leaves a vivid impression on the reader through the amazing world that effectively describes. Highly recommended book for nature lovers.

A non-stop, lyrical work of well crafted prose.
Twenty-year-old Jane Turner sets off on a cross-country adventure in She Drove Without Stopping. By the end of her reckless, risky year on the road she's been in love, in danger, in jail, and, finally, in control of her own life again. In She Drove Without Stopping, author Jaimy Gordon provides a memorable protagonist in a whirling, non-stop, lyrical novel where a well-crafted prose is in perfect service to a deeply engaging, unique, and entertaining story. Highly recommended.
