Well researched analysis of occultism.
Every Christian ought to read Gary North's "Unholy Spirits." Within our context we probably do not encounter too many psychic healings, spontaneous combustions, witch hexings and the like. North assembles an impressive amount of research (his chapter on the sorcerer's world was particularly intriguing) in a convincing fashion. By the end of the book, one should be convinced in the existence and power of evil spirits. North does an excellent job of critiquing the rationalism of modern scientists, who refuse to take seriously the reality of the paranormal. Rationalism, as Cornelius Van Til argued, has a secret treaty with irrationalism, and North proves the existence of this treaty. Both sides (rationalism/irrationalism), although they often have internal squabbles, are against God and His Anointed. History often manifests the oscillation between these two systems of thought, and this is due to man's propensity to refuse to embrace biblical religion. The 1960s and its infatuation with the occult mark a transitory stage into the irrational, Van Til's "integration into the void." Being a man who refuses to fight something with nothing, North offers his readers the only good alternative to the coming (seemingly) world of irrational, chaotic humanism--covenantal obedience to every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God. "Unholy Spirits" is a fine read. Be sure to follow North's warnings, however, in your study of this often macabre subject.

A unique, groundbreaking book
This is intellectual detective work at its best. The forward alone (The Crisis of Western Rationalism) is just about worth the price of the book. North follows the rationalistic viewpoint to lits logical conclusion, showing why it helps foment occultism. He also shows how orthodox Christianity has the only answer to problems unanswerable by devotees of science or the occult. But it's hardly a sermon. None the likes of which you've heard before. It's a full course meal for the mind on every page. It was through the reading of this book that I was introduced to the writings of Jacques Vallee, because North dedicates some analysis to Vallee's work. He believes that Vallee is on target about UFO's being a control mechanism of deception, but wrong about what they really are. At any rate there is one thing you will not be when reading this book....bored.

A heavily dog-eared and marked up book on my shelf.
My thanks to Gordon Padwick. Integrated Office Application lifted the veil from my eyes and I finally understood how to control one MS Office application from another. It has great, practical examples of how to control Excel from Access, Access from Excel, Excel from Word, etc. Learning about CopyFromRecordset (an Excel Range method) was enough to justify purchase of this book! I grok it now.

More Context Needed
With a book of this nature, it's hard separating an evaluation of the book from an evaluation of the technology itself -- so I won't try too hard. Yes, the book showed certain evidence of haste in editing and proofing but the errors and weaknesses are not of the type to cause an early adopter to stumble. For instance, there is no index but chapters are distinct enough so that it is easy to find the broad categories.

I eagerly picked up this book after attending a very impressive demo of Curl's capacities. Only skimming the two chapters on Object Oriented Programming, I concentrated on the other chapters most relevant to GUI developers of Web-based applications.

Being an ardent practitioner of the W3C's Cascading Style Sheets technology, I was a bit disappointed in Curl's implementation of styles, which seems clumsy and very limited, even considering the differences in syntax. The authors were very knowledgeable on HTML and CSS issues -- which made their reliance on tables for layout a bit disturbing. Does this indicate that Curl lacks equivalents for CSS positioning and layout properties -- or merely that the authors did not happen to see this as important enough to include in examples?

I was dissatisfied with the paucity of examples and the fact that these examples were not of the type of depth to glue the various parts of Curl together. There were some good examples involving 2-D and 3-D graphics which showed the technology to advantage. However, if your primary interest is in form-based Web applications, the examples were sketchy.

The book really needs to have context. Criticism of Java, HTML, JavaScript, etc. is not enough.
The authors must speak more directly to the questions:
{}Does the Web world need another proprietary, Java-like browser plug-in?
{}Does the Curl organization have what it takes to go against Microsoft's .NET, which has a similar architecture and revenue model?

Answer these questions and you not only have a good book, but a real cool winning tool.

Good book with a few warts
Curl is an important new client-side web language that permits you to create web applications that have the same rich interactive power of local applications (Word, Excel) while reducing the complexity that arises from using multiple existing web languages.

This is currently the BEST Curl book on the market. Ok, it's currently the ONLY Curl book on the market, which makes it Good News/Bad News.

Good News: This book does a great job of providing Curl information and "how to" examples in more depth than the Curl manuals. All the major topics are covered, which makes this a good overall reference book. The graphics architecture section is particularly helpful, where the authors describe the overall graphics framework of Curl. This info would save any new user time when learning Curl.

Bad News: by targeting the early adopter, the book is timely, but shows some warts. Some sections still show and describe the last beta version of Curl. The last beta was mostly similar to the current version of Curl, but the small differences are occasionally distracting. The book also has a number of typos and the class descriptions in one table were copied directly from the (free) Curl manual. As most of the authors are from Curl Corporation, this is not plagiarism, but it is not new information either.

Overall, this book serves its purpose by being the first overall book on Curl. The book itself is a great way to learn Curl in conjunction with the Curl manuals. Despite its warts, it is well worth owning.

[Bruce Mount worked as one of the Technical Reviewers for this book. No, he didn't review the section with typos. :-)]

Technology that may never take off
If you have never been to curls website and looked at this new web technology, you do not know what you are missing. In some ways, you can think of Curl as Flash on steroids, although you can do much more than the eye candy Macromedia is known for.

They call this book an early adopter book, but, since I think Curl is most likely going to go the way of Microsoft Agent, it is more a Bleeding Edge book. Unlike Microsoft Agent, however, I do think this technology is very useful.

So, what is Curl? Curl is a new OO technology for web UI development. In many ways, it is what Java promised, with applets, in its early days. The main difference here is Curl is designed to create dynamic, awe inspiring presentations (ala Flash) without a lot of work (once you learn the language, that is).

The book deals with Curl primarily as a UI development language. Through the chapters you will learn to work with 2d and 3d environments, multimedia and even dynamic client interaction. As with all Wrox books, there are plenty of code examples (all downloadable from the Wrox site).

I really love this book, although I wonder if the technology will ever really take off (Curl engine download is huge if you have a dialup).

solid, comprehensive & comrehensible
I've used the book for several years in my Business Law I & II classes. I've found its excerpts from judicial opinions pretty useful. The coverage of topics is quite compehensive, and the authors do a good job of describing the legal principles accurately while still remaining comprehensible.

Rich Portrayal
This wonderful book is a rich portrayal of the Oneida people. Young readers and adults will enjoy learning about Oneida Indian nation's history, culture and family life. Readers are well served by this book's co-authors. Gordon McLester guides readers through the life of his Oneida people and Elisabeth Torres shares her teaching skills with a story that is both interesting and chock full of lots of facts and details - even recipes. The Oneida is a delightful book.

Textbook of Surgery

Easy-to-read undergraduate surgical text
Clunie's "Textbook of surgery" is a surgical text aimed at the medical undergraduate and covers all the essential topics for exams. While it is not as comprehensive as Way's "Current Surgical Diagnosis and Treatment", it is much more readable - the information is explained clearly and is therefore easily digested. It also has more up-to-date management of diseases (the last edition of Way came out in 1994). The problem-solving section at the back of Clunie is extremely useful. The book is certainly an excellent buy for Australasian students, who rarely have the opportunity to read texts with local data. My main criticisms would be: the lack of a chapter on cardiothoracic surgery; no specific section dedicated to chronic liver disease; very few diagrams.

Fulfills a need, but needs better proof reading
There is a definite need for a book like this. However, some more careful pre-publishing review would have helped. For example, the permeability of free space is given wrong, consistently, by a factor of 10^20. The formulas for Coulomb's law, and the Biot-Savart law, have the wrong exponent of "r" in the denominator. The formula for inductance of a solenoid implies a dependence of inductance on current, although if the student has the patient to track down the definition of symbols the answer is correct, if expressed in a curious way. All in all, there is a great need for a book like this, but a reference work has to be as far as possible 100% trustworthy and reliable. A second, corrected, version of this book would be invaluable.

Good reference book for school homeworks..
From High School to college I Found this book very useful as a quick reference guide for any subject, you can find any formula or any constant that you need while doing a homework, youll find it quickly and you wont lose time consulting any other book.

As other revieweres said it has some erros, but theyre minimal, and the book covers a wide selecetion of engineering topics.
Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and mathematics.

I give it four stars only for the minimal erros, but consider it a good and handy book for any quick reference, specially if you know concepts and only need to look for exact info.

An excellent reference source for general science
Although there are some errors, this is the best general reference source I have encountered. Considering its breath of information, its accesibility, and its cost, this is an excellent reference for high schools and high school and college students. The organization of the book invites people to look up a specific piece of information. The book includes sections on constants, units, biology, chemistry, geology, physics and mathematics. The book includes obscure as well as often used information. This would be an excellent book to give to a person who would need or be interested in some of the tools of science.
