Priceless source book
This is a beautiful volume with complete and authentic research, covering nearly 2 centuries of Remington, America's oldest firearms manufacturer. The serious collector will appreciate the fine photography by Paul Goodwin showing minute details of all models of revolvers, rifles, and shotguns, including presentation pieces. Students of military history and western Americana will find this to be a priceless source book. Well done, having been co-sponsored by the Cody Firearms Museum and the Remington Society of America.

i've seen much better nicu books!
this book was not as captivating and engrossing as other nicu books by the parents. the stories seemed to gloss over, there are a lot of pages, but there are pictures, etc that dont use as much space for words. the stories of the children were not as detailed, and it didnt tug at my heart the way other books have. instead, i recommend-"living miracles-stories of hope from premature babies" by kimberly powell and kim wilson, editors. this one is more detailed, gripping, and heartfelt.

Recommended to anyone who has ever had a baby in the NICU
"Alone" is how parents feel when they first walk into the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Spouses even feel alone from each other. Husband and wife have planned and dreamed of this birth together, but a baby born either too soon or sick leaves everyone alone and terrified. The tragedy of this unexpected (but much too frequent) childbirth makes the book, "You Are Not Alone" of tremendous importance to new parents of a baby in the NICU. The many true stories (and their realistic pictures) can help parents to realize that they are in a place where pioneer parents can help them. At the beginning the NICU experience is like being lost in a maze with no end. But "You Are Not Alone" helps new, very lost parents to realize that there are experienced guides that wish to help them. The writers of "You Are Not Alone" are a few of those guides. I recommend this book to anyone who has ever had a baby in the NICU, even it it is decades ago. I also recommend that every tertiary hospital include it in their library of books for parents of high-risk babies and their gift store. And all libraries that believe that books on child rearing are essential should put this on the required list.

Michael T. Hynan, PhD, Clinical Psychology from University of Iowa. He has taught in the Psychology Department at U of Wisconsin-Milwaukee since 1974. He is the father of a premature baby, Chris, born in 1980 at 30 weeks gestation weighing 1200 g. Dr. Hynan also does research on Post-traumatic Stress Disorder in high-risk parents. Dr. Hynan is the author of "The Pain of Premature Parents: A Psychological Guide for Coping."

Whatever happens, you too can survive.
For many new parents, there are two major sources of difficulty around coping with having a newborn in the NICU: (1) Fear that their intense feelings are abnormal, and (2) feeling singled out by tragic fate. This book can help. Filled with a wide variety of personal stories written by parents who've "been there," it offers comfort and reassurance to new parents who need to know that others have struggled with situations similar to theirs; that others have felt the same emotions.

The mothers and fathers who contributed to this book are not professional writers--some are more eloquent than others. Some parents merely skate on the surface. But to the editor's credit, these are not sugar-coated stories of medical miracles or stoicism. The ups and downs, joys and sorrows, triumphs and fumblings are all here. Some babies survive and thrive, others continue to have medical complications or developmental lags; some babies die. Parents share their fears, challenges and failings, as well as insights, lessons learned and blessings found. They admit that while dealing with a sick baby is a labor of love, it also takes a lot of patience, time, and energy. It's not easy. But therein lies the richness of their lives.

As new parents read these stories, they will be struck by the fact that their own deep feelings of anger, guilt, helplessness, fear, and despair are normal, not crazy or overreacting. They can see that other parents have emerged from the dark days in the NICU. They'll come away empowered, knowing that they can face their baby's fate and their emotions. Most importantly, they'll acquire hope--that whatever happens, they too can survive.

Gave me new hope
I found this book quite enlightening and informative. It's filled with up-to-date information this is presented in a well-organized manner. As someone who suffers from bipolar disorder, I found it uplifting to learn more about what's wrong with me and see that progress is being made toward better treatments. This book should be read by bipolar patients, as well as their families and friends. Avery Z. Conner, author of "Fevers of the Mind".

A book that delivers its promise
New Hope for People With Bipolar Disorder is a book that delivers its promise. The authors have contributed their understanding and extraordinary knowledge of manic-depressive illness to help those who suffer from this malady - to give them and their loved ones hope. There is also a cautionary note which details how the all too common failure to diagnose this disorder can disable and destroy lives. This is not done through the simple recitation of statistics, but rather by detailing personal accounts of those who have met the challenge and coped. If I read this book ten years ago, my life would be dramatically different today. So many persons would have been spared the pain my untreated illness brought them. And if everyone would read this book, so much of the stigma which inhibits sufferers from seeking treatment would dissipate and shame would be transformed to compassion.

Comprehensive and easy to read
This book had the best descriptions of mania and depression of any I've read. I have personal experience with these disorders through family members. I have collected a library on these subjects, wanting to understand as much as I can. I have often been disappointed with books on the bipolar disorder and clinical depression.

"New Hope..." is excellent for those suffering from not only bipolar disorder, but from clinical depression. I appreciated the scientific information, including images of the brain of a depressed person and a "normal" person. It's phenomenal to see that there is actually a physical difference.

The knowledge in this book is truly hope for those who suffer from depression and from bipolar disorder. It should be recommended for all family members of people who suffer from these conditions.

A "Must Read" In Times Like These!
This is one of the most informative and interesting books I have read in quite awhile. Jan Goodwin provides an excellent examination of both Islam and Islamists -- not always the same thing, especially in today's world. The first chapter has an understandable recreation of the birth of Islam, and how its prophet, Mohammed, viewed women. This beginning is severely contrasted with the ways in which many Muslim countries treat and sometimes oppress women -- all the while, stating that the Koran allows this behavior. Through interviewing women from several Muslim countries -- Afganistan, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Jordan, Iran, Iraq and others -- Goodwin presents a disturbing picture of how women are depicted and controlled, despite the freedoms guaranteed to them by Islam. There are several surprises: who would have thought that women have more freedom (comparatively) in Iran than in Pakistan, which had a female prime minister, Benazir Bhutto? That women raped in many Muslim countries are blamed and shamed, perhaps even killed by relatives, even if the rape occurred due to home invasion? And that 'hymen restoration surgery' is offered in some countries where if a bride is not a virgin on her wedding night, she will be killed. These examples are just the beginning of an in-depth look Muslim women. Of course, not every situation is negative. Many women have a good sense of what Islam really says about their rights; also, there is a good sense that, as in all religion, the extremists may get the press, but the average believer knows the truth of their beliefs and the rights for both men and women. I have recommended this book to several of my classes as a place to begin studying the background for world events.

A MUST READ!!!!!!!!!!!!
The Price of Honor is a journey through ten years of research on the life of Muslim women in ten different Middle Eastern countries.
Jan Goodwin puts forth a very well written and well researched book, that has helped me gain some understanding of the culture of Muslim women under extremist Islamic rule.
One can't help but feel the pain and misery that these women live and experience in today's day and age.
This book may not speak for every Muslim woman, however, the fact still stands that most Americans treat their dogs better than women are treated under extreme Islamic rule.
Great and thought provoking book!

I highly recommend this book (April 23,2003)
I loved this book, despite the fact that some sections are extremely sad. It's a powerful, riveting read, and extremely well researched. The author engages the reader in way you feel as if you are right there yourself talking to these women. It was obvious that Goodwin was able to develop a great deal of trust and rapport with the women she interviewed. I was also impressed at the variety of people she spoke with in countries that frequently have strict censorship. The book includes interviews with educated elite women to the impoverished illiterate, from conservative to liberal Muslims, and the author didn't just confine herself to the Arab Muslim world, but included non Arab-Muslim countries.

Having read the original version of the book, I still found it extremely helpful to go back and read the updated version, which has just come out, especially in light of 9/11, and the recent U.S. wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Price of Honor raised my awareness and understanding significantly of a part of the world we in the U.S. tend not to know a great deal about.

Equally important is the fact that the author is very respectful of Islam. I now understand why their faith is so important to Muslims, and just how integrated it is in their every day life and politics.

The book is an astounding tour of a large swathe of the Muslim world; the comparison within and between and among the different countries was fascinating. I highly recommend Price of Honor.

I am not sure, however, why Amazon continues to promote the older version of the book, while making potential customers search for the recently updated version.
