Outstanding Resource for Epidemiologists & Researchers
"Field Epidemiology" by Gregg (editor) and colleagues from the U.S. federal government's Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is a vital resource for epidemiologists, health advocates, and public health researchers and specialists. The book is remarkable both for its content and the high quality of editorship, too rare a combination in biomedical texts.

The book's content addresses field epidemilogy, which is somewhat awkwardly defined as "..the application of epidemiology under the following set of general conditions: *The problem is unexpected. *An immediate response may be demanded. *Public health epidemiologists must travel to and work in the field to solve the problem. *The extent of the investigation is likely to be limited because of the imperative for timely intervention." Despite an awkward definition (i.e., defining field epidemiology by its antecedents), field epidemiology is the reality of responsive, responsible, comtemporary public health practice: A cluster of disease occurs of unknown origin, the public becomes concerned, public health agencies are expected to respond with compassion and utilitarian epidemiological methods. In this book's 18 chapters are described the hows, whys, and whats necessary to conduct field epidemiology. Each chapter is written by an expert in his or her area of epidemiology. A sample of chapter titles includes: Conducting a Field Investigation, Analyzing and Interpreting Data, Developing Interventions, Communicating Epidemiologic Findings, Dealing with the Public and Media, and Legal Considerations in a Field Investigation.

This book should also be savored for its clarity of expression, taut editorship, and integration of chapters. "Field Epidemiology" is an outstanding resource for any health professional's bookshelf.

A Must Read for Managers!
This is an extremely well written explanation of one of the latest and best management theories. One of the things I liked best about this book is the explanation of the major management trends of the past and how they brought business to the point it is today. Most management books simply tell one what to do, but this book tells the background of the problems we face, then goes on to explain very clearly how they can be solved.

Leading With Knowledge is a thought-provoking read!

A great resource for both students and professionals
This is a great text which introduces all of the fundmental aspects of rock mechanics, including the use of block theory. It is a great resource for both students and professionals.

Prof. Goodman's Rock Mechanics
As a Ph.D student of Geotechnical Engineering at UC Berkeley, I recommend Prof. Goodman's "Introduction to Rock Mechanics". This book has been, and always is the kind of can't-afford-without reference book for every Engineer and Scientist in the field of Rock Engineering and Enginnering Geology.

This book treats many aspects of engineering properties of rock. Block Theory is actually the highlight of this book. By projecting 3D block pyramids into 2-D steronet, the stability of slope cut comprised of jointed rock blocks becomes quite evident, and the analysis method is straight-forward and can performed by hand. Key blocks (removable blocks) could be identified and so does the corresponding bolting forces and so on. As put in the comments of Prof. Goodman's 35th Rankine Lecture (1995), Block Theory initiated by Prof. Goodman and Dr. Shi here at Berkeley really makes the once impossible 3D rock slope problem completely POSSIBLE. Block Theory maybe one of the most elegant theories of this kind in Rock Engineering, and this book will give you the best introductory insight you could expect.

Kowning Prof. Goodman personally very well, I could say that he is really a "good man" , actually, one of the most distinguished figures in acadamics. His talent in both academics and musics makes this book very easy to read. Thus I strongly recommend this book to you, and hope to share with you the exciting world of ROCK.

The best primary book in rock mechanics
I am a student of geotechnical engineering. I am reading this book as the text book of rock mechanics course and I think this is the best book for learning rock mechanics. It describes Rock Mechanics in the easiest way and with the easiest words. I read the 1989 second edition of this book and unfortunetly I can't buy new version because it is so expensive for me!

An introduction to Cubs history for their young fans
I probably heard at some point that "Hack" Wilson's first name was Lewis; I probably noticed it on his plaque at Cooperstown last summer. But when Michael E. Goodman related how the nickname came, not from Wilson's swing but from his resemblance to George Hackenschmidt, a famous wrestler of the time, he told me something I did not know. This is always a good sign with any juvenile history, especially when we are talking baseball.

"The History of the Chicago Cubs," is intended to introduce younger fans of today to the past of their favorite team. After reading this book even the youngest Cubs fan will understand the sorrow and the pity that is the legacy of this ancient franchise. Goodman goes back to the founding of the team and its early glory days at the turn of the century, and the Cubs revival with Wilson and Gabby Hartnett's fabled "homer in the gloaming." We then cover the years of "Mr. Cub" Ernie Banks and the closer but no cigar era of Ryne Sandberg and Andre Dawson. The book ends on an optimistic note with Sammy Sosa and Kerry Wood, although Mark Grace, Jeremi Gonzales, Kevin Orie, and Jim Riggleman are already long gone. Such are the changing tides of baseball.

This book is illustrated with full-page and two-page color photographs of some of the Cubs stars of the 1980s and 1990s, from Ryne Sandberg to Sammy Sosa, with the great players from the past such as Mordecai "Three Fingers" Brown and Billy Williams reduced to one-inch square photos. Goodman's look at the Cubs provides young fans with a brief history of the team and certainly hits the highlights.

An introductory history of the pre-McGwire Cardinals
At the end of "The History of the Cardinals" author Michael E. Goodman talks about how the team's fans are excited by the arrival of Mark McGwire in St. Louis. The book ends at the start of the 1998 season when McGwire joined Willie Mays at the only other NL player to homer in the first four games of the season. Now, of course, Big Mac has retired from baseball, but what he did in the interim certainly added another great chapter to the history of the Cardinals.

This book is clearly intended for young fans, who will be disappointed to realize there is not a single photograph of a player still with the team. Amazing how much the Cardinals's roster has changed in just a few short years. However, the strength of Goodman's book is that it gives those young fans an introductory history of their favorite franchise from Rogers Hornsby to the Gas House gang of Dizzy Dean and Frank Frisch, to the legendary Stan Musial, to the powerhouse teams of Bob Gibson and Lou Brock in the 1960s and the speed merchants of Ozzie Smith and Willie McGee in the 1980s.

The book is illustrated with color photographs of some players of recent vintage, although a two-page spread of Delino De Sheilds at bat is a rather odd choice. However, there are also photographs of Ozzie Smith doing his patented flip and a nice shot of Stan the Man. The narrative history features one-inch square photographs of key players from Miller Huggins to Ray Lankford. This is not a great history of the St. Louis Cardinals, but it is a fine introduction for young fans who will certainly finds lots of other books from which to learn more about the Redbirds of the past.

Warm reflections on an agrarian interlude
"French Lessons" is a warm memoir of the author's year long sojourn in a rural village in Southern France. Unlike the recollections of other foreign visitors who have written of their experiences in France, Goodman gives scant attention to the region's food or wine.

Goodman's tale is primarily spiritual -- the satisfaction he derives from communing with nature as a gardener, and his persistent efforts to gain acceptance and approval from this close knit, closed community of French farmers. The book is reminiscent of Chris Stewart's "Driving Over Lemons" in the latter respect.

Goodman's passion about his gardening experiences does become a bit cloying, and is somewhat saccarine, with almost forced profundity. A passage where he describes getting emotional over cutting bamboo, for example, definitely makes your teeth hurt. Although I derive a considerable amount of satisfaction from gardening myself, I found Goodman's anecdotes somewhat breathless and gushing, particularly his striving to "measure up" in the eyes of a helpful, friendly, apparently very strong 20 year old named Jules.

This is a pleasant book; however, I expected more, in light of the potential. "French Dirt" is mostly a recollection of Goodman's spiritual journey devoting himself to a garden one summer.

Little Old Gardenmaker, Me
Richard Goodman and his Dutch girlfriend Iggy rent a two hundred year old stone house in the south of France for a year. Located in a small village of about 200 without a cafe, store or any kind of city center, they have a tough time figuring out how to connect with the locals. They do make one set of friends--a Spanish couple also living the expat life there.

But finally Richard decides to trade his labor for some firewood. Through working in the fields he begins to mix with the villagers. He is very much struck by Jules, a handsome 25 year old, and through that relationship eventually secures a small plot of land and determines to grow a vegetable garden.

And that really is the focus of the book. A longtime city dweller, Richard harkens back to the Michigan gardens of his youth and enjoys discovering the adult joys of gardening. Sometimes the writing gets to be a bit much--pretty sappy. And, if the truth be told, Richard isn't really very good at growing his garden. But the rivalries among the other village gardeners, the disparate and conflicting advice he receives and the hours spent in the sun tending his garden make this a light, likable read. And truly any book set in the south of France makes for a relaxing summer read!

Help Yourself to Richard's Garden
This delightful short novel explores the author (an American) and his girlfriend's endeavors to cultivate friends and fruit in the south of France. I found myself walking alongside Richard as he introduced himself to his first real friend, Monsier Vasquez, as he binged on plant buying, as he picked his first vegetable. His description of the prank in which one of the least likely villagers placed perfect red, ripe tomatoes in his garden in early June was hilarious. For anyone wanting to experience living in a small French village this book vividly plants you there!
