Journey of awakening : a meditator's guidebook

Authors: Ram Dass and Daniel Goleman

Want to meditate and don't know where to start? Read this!
Ram Dass leads you on your meditation path, as he simplifies the method for you. Interjecting quotes from poems, scriptures, and wise zen sayings, Ram Dass pulls from wisdom and faith to help you along your journey. An especially helpful chapter on learning mantras, and the value in repeating mantras

Yeah, yeah, what he said... ;)
All the reviews here are right on target. This book states some HUGE truths in a very simple, elegant manner. The talk about the ego and the mind chatter echos A Course in Miracles, Hiduism, and probably many other spiritual paths. His understanding of the human mind in general and meditation in particular drips from the page. I especially like that he doesn't "sell" one particular style of meditation but gives a fair introduction to all. Many roads, same destination. A must read for both the interested and the experienced.

A Meditation in itself
I read this book as a form of meditation. The pace, the language, even the mandalas and other drawings can be used as tools to launch onesself into the deeper life. Best read or listened to during the morning commute to set a good tone for the rest of a hectic day.

Great Ideas
This is an incredible book. I gives som many interesting ideas and examples.

Raising a child is really really really challenging...
So many times, before I know it, I'm launching into telling my son what to do, how, where, why... Without giving him a chance! And I've already read most of the book! It is so important how we talk to our kids. If we say the wrong words too often, we build up a wall in them. They need to express themselves and work out their own problems and feel SAFE expressing EVERYTHING with you and TRUSTING YOU while not compromising your morals and beliefs. It's amazing how much happiness there is between parent and child. It's the best thing in the world! Yet I fear, it is so easy to watch it all disappear without knowing why. This book gives you a chance NOW, to hear yourself and gives you the instructions to hold on to that joy and pride. I KNOW when I have said the RIGHT thing. This book taught me things you just don't get with trial and error! Instead of grasping at the vapor fumes of youth's departure, I know, I'm doing the best I can to be there always, with love being true. Do NOT forget this: #1 ALL PARENTS MUST ALWAYS READ ABOUT THEIR CHILDREN. (Trust the wealth of literature! Really! Don't fool around with trial and error. A child is NOT your first model airplane where you didn't read the instructions beforehand!) #2 THIS BOOK SHOULD BE ON THAT REQUIRED LIST!

Thanks for reading! Take the stand. Be there for your kids.

One of the best parenting books!
You can find a lot of books about parenting, but many of them are just pop psychology, the solitary opinion of the author.
Gottman is definitely not one of them. He is known as one of the leading psychologists in the area of family and marriage psychology. This book presents the essence of his research findings about raising emotionally intelligent children.
His advise is surprisingly easy and is based on a 5 step model:
1. Be aware of your child's emotion
2. See your child's emotions as an opportunity to be close together
3. Actively listen to your child and validate the feelings
4. Help your child to verbalize his feelings
5. Help your child solve problems, while setting clear limits

Gottman clearly explains how you can implement this 5-step-model in daily life and what to do when problems arise. His real life examples make reading really fun.
All in all, an excellent parenting book! As a supplement, I can also recommend the book by M. Seligman: "The optimistic child"

The Meditative Mind: The Varieties of Meditative Experience
Published in Paperback by HarperCollins Publishers (11 December, 1989)
Authors: Daniel Goleman Ph D and Ram Dass
Amazon base price: $
Average review score:

A complete path
I found this book 5 years ago and have really not found another book which is better at describing complete path with such clarity, and richness. I think this book is extremely helpful for all meditators who are interested in seeing where they are on the path. For without a map, it is extremely easy for any meditator to become lost and not make any real progress. This book in my opinion can also be used to assess the presence of authentic teachers, someone who has traversed at least 4 levels of absorption, have seen validity attachment in cause of suffering, have begun purification of their bodies as well as their minds, and have experienced true emptiness and not fallen into attachment afterwards.

Scientific study of meditation
Good overall book of meditation. Goleman makes the distinction between the two major types of meditation: Concentration and Mindfulness. He also gives a pretty thorough description of the Visuddhimagga mind maps. He goes on to describe Hindu Bhaki, Jewish Kabblah, Christian Hesychasm, Sufism, TM, Ashtanga, Tantra and Kundalini Yoga, Tibetan Buddhism, Zen, Gurdjeiff and Krishnamurti

Exceptionally Clear Presentation of Meditation
1. The distinction between concentration and mindfulness as forms of practice has never in my reading experience been so clearly stated. (My meditation library is extensive and my practice is 7 years old.) 2. The stages of insight work -- also, the clearest presentation in my reading experience. Particularly helpful were the discussions on "visions" (p. 12) and pseudonirvana (p. 26). 3. Part IV: The Psychology of Meditation -- This is a gem. Ties in beautifully with _Emotional Intelligence_ (another Goleman treasure). The "altered states or altered traits" of consciousness discussion (pg. 172-5) is the best explanation of the "3rd foundation of mindfulness" I have seen. Summary: If you are interested in how your practice fits into the grand scheme of practices or looking for a menu to chose from, this is the book. If you want a clarification of the path at the center of all practices, no where else have I seen a better presentation.

This! ! is a seven star book as is _Emotional Intelligence_.

this is just to ask you a question about a review I wrote!
Hi

I wrote a review a while back.

Recently one of guys who wrote a chapter in the book emailed me that made a mistake in who I attributed which chapters to.

If I send you a corrected review, will you replace the old one? I think tht would be easier than trying to reword the old one.

Thanks

A well-presented collection of valuable research.
Emotional intelligence has become an interesting area of research in the fields of psychology and education. Salovey and Sluyter enlighten readers by providing an understanding of emotional intelligence and how this construct is vital to successful human adaptation.

The editors include works by several prominent researchers that offer varying perspectives on the development of human emotions, and many educational implications. A particularly refreshing component of this book is the inclusion of a K-12 educator's commentary at the end of each chapter.

Salovey and Sluyter provide a well-presented collection of valuable research on the popular topic of emotional intelligence. This book is recommended for everyone that is interested in the recent research on emotional intelligence and emotional development. However, Emotional Development and Emotional Intelligence is essential for researchers, teachers, and other professionals in the fields of education and psychology.

It provides an important link between empirical research and practical applications of emotional intelligence. Although research on emotional intelligence continues, this book is the first step towards founding a knowledge base on this important construct.

Great summary of EI research for educators, bit hard to read
Peter Salovey and his colleague, John Mayer, were apparently the first to use the term "emotional intelligence" in their academic research. Of special interest is Salovey's new definition of the term which he offers in this book (in the first article.)

The book is a collection of academic articles which each offer lots of research journal citations. This makes it easy for someone to do further research. (Very handy for college students writing papers!)

Salovey only wrote two articles for the book. I would prefer to have seen more of his writing. It seems to be a bit more concise. Some of the contributors get very wordy and overly academic when they could say things much more simply.

Each article is followed by a short commentary by an K-12 educator. I found these commentaries are only somewhat helpful. Even they were pretty academic. I would prefer more practical suggestions, such as those on my site (see below)

If you have a masters or Ph.D. you won't have too much trouble with the book. But it is not written for the average second grade teacher.

Still, it is worth the time it takes to read it, and I would agree that it is an "authoritative" book. Peter Salovey by the way, seems to be more concerned with making a positive difference in the world, while Daniel Goleman seems to be more concerned with making a fortune and a name for himself. Salovey is, for example, is working with educators while Goleman is pandering to the corporations with his new book on EQ for business.

And I personally agree with most of Salovey's approach to EI in education. For example, he says teach EI lessons as the opportunity arises throughout the day. He understates the importance of the teacher's emotions and his/her own level of EI, however. Teachers have a lot of work to do on their own emotional management before they will be good instructors and, more importantly, models, of EI.

Article 4 by Greenberg and Snell is the best single article I have seen on the child's brain and the importance of healthy emotional nurturing in the first few years.

Other especially informative articles were 5 and 6 on regulation of emotions.

Article 9 is interesting in how it suggests we apply academic research to practical educational settings.

Summary

A bit pricey, but full of research data and references as well as very interesting information on the brain and the child's emotional development. And as the title suggests, it does address educational implications, albeit in a somewhat theoretical manner. Overall, I would recommend it to anyone who is seriously interested in either EI or education.

Becoming
The quest to be spirit filled never ends because it is always revealed that we must continue on toward an ever moving goal. This text certianly reveals fresh, yet ancient ways, to become more aware of what lies around us and how we can incorporate it into ourselves. I have come to understand that to be so self focused is not to be "self centered," for as we beautify our spirit we bring beauty to the world.

Inspiring
Inspiring! I couldn't put it down.

A beautiful book on practical aspects of spirituality
I couldn't put the book down. I read a lot of spirituality, but this one is one of the best. It goes over major life events, ways to pray, ways to contemplate, why, how to do it in the modern world. It doesn't recommend running to a guru, but gives sound advice to use today. Highly recommended.

A fantastic audio book every parent should have!
This audio book has opened my eyes to what children are really thinking and how to deal with them. I have tried the recommended ideas with my own daughter and it has worked wonders. It can be difficult at first, but with patience, these ideas will create a bond between you and your child that you may not have known could exist.

Marvellous!
"Emotional Intelligence" has recently been recognized as an important life skill. A combination of important traits (including self-discipline, ability to handle anger appropriately, self-esteem, empathy, and social skills), emotional intelligence allows one to handle life's frustrations and to "work and play well with others." These skills have been shown as more important than I.Q. as predictors of success in one's personal relationships and career. This wonderful book teaches parents how to raise their children to have emotional intelligence. The book sees children's problems and frustrations as opportunities for "emotion coaching" - helping them learn how to deal with their emotions. The book also identifies four "parenting styles" - two of these styles react negatively to chldren's negative emotions, one style accepts them but doesn't help the child deal with them, and the "Emotion Coaching" style accepts the emotions and teaches the child what to do with them. I wish my parents had had this book - I was a "difficult" child, prone to tantrums, etc., but much of my difficulty came from feeling frustrated and not knowing what to do about it. My parents were loving, but didn't really know how to handle the problem. This book will create greater understanding between parent and child, and will help the child grow up to be an emotionally healthy adult.

Healing Emotions: Conversations With the Dalai Lama on Mindfulness, Emotions, and Health

Very Highly Recommended
In the summer of 1991 specialists in the fields of psychology, medicine, neuroscience, philosophy, immunology, meditation, and Buddhism gathered with the Dalai Lama to conduct the Third Mind Life Conference. The purpose of the Mind Life Conferences is to discuss bridges and interface with what can broadly be called the sciences of mind and life -biology, cognitive science, neuroscience, and psychology, as well as philosophy of mind. This third conference's purpose was to increase mutual understanding and facilitate the emergence of new insight to the relationship between health and emotional experience. This book, Healing Emotions, is the record of this meeting.

Daniel Goleman, scientific coordinator of the conference, cleanly edits and presents the content of the conference. He introduces each presentation with his summary of the content. Goleman then gives the actual presentation made by each of the speakers, and continues with the discussions that followed. The discussions cover ethics, virtues, emotions' impact on health, stress, behavioral medicine, self-esteem, medicine and compassion. In the presentations the speakers share their theories, tests, results, and case histories.

It's lively, interesting, noteworthy discussions: a documentation of a rare and unusual exchange.

Transpersonal Psychology the Eastern Way
Dan Goleman has done it again. A highly readable book rooted in scientific research - just like his two books on Emotional Intelligence. Compared to other edited Mind and Life Conference books, this one describes the conversation in an extremely lively manner with explanations on Buddhist and scientific concepts presented as footnotes, and as a result making comprehension possible even with some abstract concepts unfamiliar to novice like me.

The enthusiasm shown by Dr. Goleman in the ability of mind over body can be found throughout the book (especially in the chapter presented by him where H.H. the Dalai Lama commented "You've just given me a lot of ammunition). This is probably due to his own knowledge and keen interest in the Eastern psychology and meditation.

muy interesante
La Inteligencia Emocional. Daniel Goleman

Please, keep this space for book reviews
This is just my own two cents but I believe that reserving this space stricly for book reviews may help in enhancing the integrity of this review section.

In my view, it may not be as helpful as intended to place Mr. Tulku Thondup's workshop schedule here, as sadly, it may have the unwanted result of reducing the author's credibility in the view of the readers such as myself : ). I have no doubt that the intentions of these reviewers were good in this case... Perhaps a more succesful approach would be to post these workshop schedules on non-associated website. Thank you for listening. Peace.

Amazing!
Good for both the newcomer and the experienced reader of buddhism. I have read this book three times, and every time is a new experience that creates an amazing aura of mindful positivity.
It is not a book of religion but it is the book about positivity.
I would reccomend it for everyone.
It has changed my life.
