a useful collection of reviews
If you're a woolf student this book may be useful to have a complete panorama of the critical situation on two of her major books. I used it to have a deeper insight on the two novels, especially on "The Waves" - a book on which critical judgement is not easily found - and found it perfectly responding to the needs of a higher university student.

The book presents the major critical instances on the two works in chronological order, from woolf's contemporaries up to our days. Each chapter deals with a selection of significant reviews, all of which belonging to the same period if not to the same attitude to the works. Moreover each chapter is introduced by a brief text by the curator explaining the main contents of the reviews which are going to follow and the principal critical ideas referring to a period or critical school.

In a few words: this is what you need if you want to get a deeper critical knowledge of "To the Lighthouse" and "The Waves", and to gain it in a quite short time - the book in fact is not too long, can be read quite quickly and if you're interested in getting particular pieces of information can also easily be skimmed through.

So much better than volume one.
I have both volume one and now volume two- thanks to used book sellers. This book contains "explainations" for some of the best in my opinion episodes. "HUMBUG", "FIREWALKER", "3" - that was the episode that had one of david duchovny's at the time's girlfriend playing a vampire, "War of the coprophages"- heh heh Dr. Bambi, "hell money", "clyde bruckman's Final repose"- the psychic epiisode-one of my all time favorites. Msybe the book was great because it had great episodes in it... or maybe it was great because it seemed to be written better than the first book. The chapters are clearly laid out into catagories: Life outside the mortal form, human enigmas, weird world, ancient beliefs, 20th century threats and paranoias, a cosmic conundrum, investigating the unexplained. It's a well written book- as i've said before. the research goldman did for this book is excellent. it is similar to the first book with quotes from the various episodes... but in my opinion is more interesting than the first one. Maybe it's because goldman had choosen some great episodes to write about. Definately get this book for your x-files collection. I'm glad that i did.

A must read for lovers of the unusual and bizarre.
This book takes you through various X-files episodes and chronicles real life examples of X-files. Pictures and interesting diagrams are included to titilate and intrigue you. Well written and includes many curious historical examples to examine

Incredibly Engaging and Thought-provoking!
This review is for both volume 1 and 2. After reading both books in their entirety in less than two weeks, I can honestly say that they opened up my eyes. The material was fascinating, and the tie-ins with the episodes provided a nice sort-of jumping off point into some of the more bizzare subjects, such as comet-spawned venus-flytraps, human hibernation, seemingly intelligent ball-lightning, the truth about zombification and succubusses and other hypnogogic terrors. The reading is fun and smooth and there are pictures throughout. The whole layout of the book is great, and the author, Jane Goldman never insists on the truth. She leaves it to us to come to our own conclusions. Some of the more fascinating chapters were Reincarnation, Wierd Nature (Book 1.), Perchance to Dream, Looking Into The Abyss, Voodoo, Mass Hysteria and the Belief Engine and Urban Legends (Book 2.) Even if you are a total sceptic, there is a lot to enjoy and learn about in these books. As you read ! the book, you'll discover that no matter what the truth is, you will inevitably learn something, about yourself and about humanity. The way these two books delve not only into the alien world outside, but into the unexplored depths of our own minds is astounding. I highly recommend these books to anyone who considers and contemplates.

How to spend a day or two
A great book. You can see there's been some thorough research conducted for this book. It was an absolute pleasure reading this book. Being the avid science and X-files fan I am, it was interesting to see XF to be presented in the light of "real" science. Really a must read for any XF or science fan.

Not bad, but not great either
If you are buying Dreamworld it is most likely because you have bought other MTV books and want to try this one. Be forewarned, however, this book is really nothing like any of the others, and it isn't as good either. The book is actually a murder/conspiracy mystery that is actually fairly predictable. The characters are pretty good, and the atmosphere is actually the best part, but the actual story is weak. For those of you who like theme parks Goldman's descriptions and inside info are fascinating, but if you truly like theme parks you will know all of the info anyway. Dreamworld, the florida amusement park where the book is set, is an almost exact copy of Walt Disney World, I could almost picture the author on It's a Small World and thinking of ideas for the book. All in all, however, the book is not bad, and you probably won't be dissapointed when you read it, but you won't be fullfilled either.

My new favorite mystery
I love mysteries with a twist, and the idea of horrible things happening beneath the flawless exterior of a theme park intrigued me from the moment I read the blurb on the back of this book. The fact that the "Dreamworld" theme park is nearly a carbon copy of Disney World, from the costumed characters to the themed lands and resorts to the "It's a Small World"-like ride where the novel's climactic moments occur, adds a strange level of realism to the story-- as if you're reading a shameful secret exposé rather than a novel. It's not just the unique setting that makes this such a wonderful mystery novel, though. The characters are great, particularly the tough and witty star Sylvia Avery. The plot builds up quite a bit of suspense as pieces of the intricate puzzle are revealed one by one, and most of the twists were very surprising. I suppose it would be wishful thinking to hope for a sequel, but as a standalone novel "Dreamworld" stands above most other mysteries I've read.

Dreamworld: characters you wish you knew
When I first bought the book, I must admit, it was only because it was an MTV book. But as soon as I had read the first chapter, I was hooked. Goldman's detailed descriptions of Avery, Trey,Hayes,Perdue, and all the other characters make you feel as if you really knew them. It's exciting,action-packed, a great mystery, has an amazing sex-appeal, and is suited for teenaged to adult readers. After I had finished it, my friends got in line to borrow it because it was an amazing read!
