Enjoyable Education
I found this book to be a very good source of information and advice, written in a style that was easy to follow and understand. My only disappointment was that it wasn't longer. Being disabled with painful back problems, I really appreciated the inclusion of a chapter on chronic pain management.

Under the Mask
I bought this book for my sister who was undergoing valve replacement surgery - she told me that the book was very informative and she was able to ask the right questions to her surgeon and anesthesiologist regarding her care, especially as far as pain control after surgery.

Under the Mask lifts the veil on Anethesi
I was stunned by reading Under the Mask by James Cottrell. I had no idea how much there was to know about anesthesia and how little I did know. and I considered myself an informed health consumer.

Should I ever need surgery again, I will know what to ask my doctor, what to tell her, and I'll know that I have options for my anesthesia support that I never knew existed.

Thank you, Dr. Cottrell, for having lifted the veil on this very important yet misunderstood area of health care.

It's a must for anyone who is going to have surgery or who has a loved one going under the mask.

How Not To Be One of the "Women Who Love Too Much"
I assigned Slaying the Mermaid to my college seminar on mermaids and feminism. At first the students were not happy -- "Why must Ariel die?" they wondered. But the view that women need mutual rather than self-sacrificing relationships to be healthy, became convincing to them. Reading the original fairy tale and watching the (altered) Disney movie provided an informative context for appreciating Stephanie Golden's interesting and helpful book. We also read the chapter about The Little Mermaid in the edited book "From Mouse to Mermaid" and I recommend that as well. The current "hot" movement in popular psychology -- 'Positive Psychology' -- is not sensitive to issues of gender and culture, so Golden's book is a worthy contribution.

Rethinking the value of self-sacrifice
A review from the author of DREAMING YOUR REAL SELF: A PERSONAL APPROACH TO DREAM INTERPRETATION; WHO'S CRAZY, ANYWAY?; and DREAM BACK YOUR LIFE.

Stephanie Golden examines how women are expected to sacrifice themselves to be feminine and acceptable to others and in the process lose their sense of themselves as they fall into the victim trap. With interesting and moving stories of very different women, she distinguishes between mindless self-sacrifice that diminishes us and a conscious choice to offer our gifts and talents in a way that expands us all. Well-written and intriguing right down to the notes at the end. I recommend it highly.

Thoughtful discussion of a complex problem
I came across this book while looking for something else, and couldn't put it down. As a woman and a former Catholic, I got a double dose of the self-sacrificing ideal. Although I later rejected the notion of female subservience, I felt that the "masculine" ideal of individualism was equally unsatisfactory: in order to achieve self-realization, did one have to reject the positive aspects of self-sacrifice, such as compassion and concern for the good of the community (or humanity as a whole)?
Golden's discussion is the first I've seen that looks at this very complex issue in depth, both intellectually and emotionally, and comes to a balanced conclusion. Rather than urging women to reject self-sacrifice outright, she carefully considers the origins of the ideal and its pluses and minuses, and helps readers to judge for themselves whether self-sacrifice in a particular situation will enrich or deplete their lives. She doesn't give easy answers, but coping with a disabled parent, or trying to assist a mentally ill person to get help, aren't easy problems. This is a truly outstanding book, and I recommend it highly.

Reformed art collector meets suspected art thief.
Gentle Hannah Prescott takes her trip to the South Seas even though she's just lost her job. She even indulges in a private fantasy about a fellow passenger she sees on the plane...but that doesn't mean she wants him to invade her room in the middle of the night! And he thinks she's a clever art thief, to boot. Jarrett Blade makes it quite clear that she can either turn over the stolen golden goddess to him or explain its possession to Customs. And he finds it in her luggage. Hannah can hardly breathe with shock. Jarret sticks to her like glue for the next few days, and announces his determination to make the liason permanent. Hannah can move in with him when they get to the mainland. Hannah has some thinking to do and Jarrett has a few adjustments to make, as well. As usual, Krentz delivers snappy dialogue, strong characters and a decent plot line. Some may find Blade's character overbearing, but I think his motivation is adequately explained.

Aka Jayne Ann Krentz.
Hannah Prescott felt like Alice in Wonderland after Jarrett Blade breaks into her hotel room looking for a gold statue. Jarrett suspects Hannah of being involved with the smugglers, but is willing to stay with her to see proof of her innocence, or so he says to explain his intrusion into her life.

Jarrett is a little overbearing, but typical for books published during this time period. Hannah is not as helpless as Jarrett would like. Overall, a good read.

Technical - For Professionals and Wannabes
I figured out on my own that rolling on a ball was a very effective way to deal with my back problems. According to the book I even figured out the exactly correct size ball for my size. I figured that this book would provide some great additional info. Frankly, it probably does, but the terminology and assumed knowledge of anatomy is so great that I quickly got glassy-eyed.

Bottom line: The technique is great, and the book is informative, but unless you have a technical background in body work, or are highly motivated to learn about this technique on your own, it's too difficult of a read to get a lot out of.

A breakthrough in self-exploration
This book is not for the person who wants an easy fix. But for anyone willing to put in the time it is just this side of miraculous. You will likely add inches and flexibility to your ribcage - increasing room for your lungs and other internal organs (I added 1-1/2 inches in 3 weeks). Your posture will improve, and as a result, you will likely add to your height (I added 1/2"). But best of all, you will look and feel rejuvinated. I have done yoga, weight lifting, walking, running - all the normal stuff. Body Rolling beats it all hands down for relaxing and energizing your body (and face - I added a face routine of my own based on the same principles.)

It helps to have a knowledge of anatomy, but, with one of the anatomy books she lists at the back, this can definitely be acquired as you work through the protocols. This will increase the time it takes to learn these routines - I found just working the back to take about 1-1/2 hours the first time or two. But now it takes about a half an hour. Additionally, in areas where you are very stiff, ie: the rib cage, you may end up very sore for awhile, requiring ice and heat, but stick with it, the results are more than worth it.

For Massage Therapists, Body Workers...ONLY
This book was not written for the lay person. It was meant for Therapists or anyone else with a good working knowledge of Anatomy. Seek out someone certified in Body Rolling if you don't have these requirements. Make your life easier. Or wait until they release a Video. The basic idea behind Body Rolling is to work from the bone to the tendon to the muscle. Working from the origin to the insertion creating length. It has great therapeutic uses. Don't judge it until you've tried it.

Tigers Bedtime
I thought that this story was really cute because
of the imagination this author had to keep children
interested, and to make this story even cuter is
the animals and their personalities. I recomend this
book to children ages 3-8 or if you are a huge animal
lover.
