Pendulum : the story of America's three aviation pioneers--Wilbur Wright, Orville Wright, and Glenn Curtiss, the Henry Ford of aviation

Pendulum . . . by Jack Carpenter
I have read a lot of books about early aviation and especially Glenn Curtiss, and Mr. Carpenter's book is among the best. It has been very helpful to me to put the entire chronology of the Wright brothers and Curtis and the development of flight in perspective because of the way he organizes his information. This book is most helpful when read AFTER a Curtiss biography, such as Roseberry's book on Curtiss.

A Different Perspective on Early Aviation
Pendulum is written for the serious student of early aviation history. Unlike most stories that focus on the Wright brothers' struggles before Dec. 17, 1903, this book delves into what happened AFTER Kitty Hawk.

In 1908 Glenn Curtiss won the Scientific American Magazine trophy for the first public flight in America. It was he, not the Wright brothers, who received instant fame and glory. He built and sold civilian airplanes while they focused on a single sale to the American, British or French Army.

The book explains how early chronicles touted Glenn Curtiss, not the Wrights, as the pioneer of aviation. Thousands of Curtiss JN-4 "Jennys" were used to train WW-I pilots. Today the pendulum has swung to the opposite extreme. Few people know of Curtiss, inventer of the flying boat and father of naval aviation, but everyone has seen the photo of Orville Wright's famous "First Flight" at Kitty Hawk.

In a sometimes dry account, Jack Carpenter meticulously compares step-by-step progress of the three men, with more rare photos than any other book. He tells how they were influenced by Alexander Graham Bell, inventer of the telephone, and Henry Ford, the father of mass produced automobiles.

Having studied the lives of all three men, I think Pendulum is the only book that gives an unbiased account of the bitter patent lawsuit that delayed the growth of American aviation for 10 years.

At Five in The Afternoon
Motherwell was an articulate voice in this period of American non-objective painting...Motherwell was more literate than most of the artist of the New York School and therefore he went much further in bring out influence, inspiration and what he calls "Psychic Automotism". This is the automatic writing/drawing that the surrealist introduced as a means to tap into the subconcious wealth of material in the artist. This book is very good at exploring the mind of the artist. Of particular value are the comments made by Motherwell that are found throughout the book next to the beautiful reproductions. I also found the interveiw at the end of the book with Motherwell very interesting. Dore Ashton provides an informed reflection on the artist and Arnason's extended text goes far to follow the major themes and subjects of the painters life- The Elegies, Open Paintings, Wall paintings ,collages and Works on paper. Even attention to the Je'tem Paintings and his Ocher peices. I recommend this grand book to anyone who loves Motherwell's work. His was a sublime acheivement in the important mid century of American painting. Buy the book new- it is far and away cheaper than any of the used copies...

Hey you:
If you're not sure whether you want to buy this book or not, why don't you get down to your local library or mega-bookshop and take a look-see for yourself, instead of reading the blather of dunderheads like those whose reviews disgrace the rest of this page?

The Loser
Even my friend Paul whom I work with, whom has won piano competitions, and played all over the town, including The Whitney, and knew what it was like to be a virtuoso, and whom after 42 years of playing the piano still has a desire to play, even though now he sells pianos more than he plays, and I who also sell pianos, and know them very, very well, though can't play them as well as Paul, but knows just as well what makes them good, and also what makes a good book, believes this book to be a new book. And what I mean by a new book is that this book has never before been written, except for maybe other books written by the author, but with different characters. That this book is not a sad book, even though it may seem as such, just as my friend Paul is not a sad man even though he may seem as such, and I, who may be the most sad of all, although one may think me to be the least sad when compared to my freind Paul, or even this book, I thought.

my choice for the fiction book of the century
thomas bernhard is a genius writer,a master no velist and"the loser" is my choice for the fiction book of the century...

Frugal Luxuries ...
This is one of the books, which is charming and delightfull as well as serious. It remindes you of lots of ideas you have already had - but you have forgotten them in stress, depression and burnout. After reading I bought this book for a special friend and suggested that she schould do the same for a friend of hers, and so on... So there is a chain and a connection.

Do yourself a favor and read this book.

The lovely Reed
This is clearly the best of the current crop of rod building books. It could do with an index (ther isn't one!), updates on components (The Golden Witch, Bellingers - he carries **everything**, not just reel seats), and additional information on critical processes (straightening glued up rods, filing, scraping, sanding a blank, wrapping, etc.). Overall, though, if you are going to build a first rod this ought to be your first purchase!

The most current book on bamboo rod making
Bamboo rod making is one of those crafts with enough twists in the road that most first-timers want as much up-to-date information as they can get before they start. The Lovely Reed ("LR") is both possibly the best single reference on the subject, and the most generally useful book if you are only reading one.

The LR is very nicely written, and carefully organized. It starts with and overview, then runs through building a rod. The second section of the book, about 1/3rd of the text, is devoted to equipment skills and techniques. This separates out specific tasks like making an oven,a dipping tank, or sharpeing a plane, which may not be attempted by all builders, or already be part of their repetoir.

A good book, which doesn't greatly overlap either Carmichael (Garrison), or Cattanach the other standards in the field.

The modern Bibel for Rodmakers after Garisson
Well, Howelss Book is a must for todays Rodmakers and all lovers of the split cane rods! Shue, he tells not much new in the craftmanship of bamboo rodbuilding, but he shows ( a lot of photos)a simple way to build your own rod. He`s way is noth much another than Garrison describe, but Howells Way is a synthese of old and new formulas! Exelent written and have also a look at his informative taper-section! Better buy the book now - most better books about the rodbuilding are fast out of print! Mabye Howell created the new rodmakers bible?!

sharing
The entire work of Joyce has the same caracteristic of "finnegans wake" it begins where it ends. No one understood it as Motherwell did. The most amazing thing is that he translated his understanding of joyce's world not by verbal ways but by visual ways - drawing. In the Dedalus sketchboks we found these wonderful drawings showing the Joycian's characters as true as they were built by their autor. And still those drawings are not illustrations. Their are very particular. I can say ,with no doubt, that they are witnesses of a meeting played by two great artists. Both man tried to share with us their views of something , I believe that this something is the human experience. If you believe what I said is true them Motherwell has been well succeded in sharing with us his own experience in Joyce's work.
