Wartime Strikes, Pathbreaking Labor History
Martin Glaberman, a former auto-worker and professor emeritus at Wayne State University has written an astounding reinterpretation of American labor history during World War II. The writing is engaging and the analysis is compelling. In contrast to much labor history written during the last thirty years, Glaberman dwells less on what working people did NOT do, and more upon what they actually DID. He finds a startling level of creativity and self-activity on the shop-floor level, and argues that rank-and-file workers, more than politicians or union leaders, were the real catalysts of social change during the period. A very timely book for building and studying the labor movement.
